Unemployment benefit If you face unemployment after graduation, you will be entitled to earnings-related unemployment allowance, which is higher that the basic unemployment allowance. You are entitled to earningsrelated unemployment allowance if you meet the condition regarding previous employment. You can start accumulating the 26-week work requirement while still a student. The Unemployment Fund for Higher Educated Employees Erko serves the member of Akava Special Branches. The unemployment fund s membership fee is included in the union s membership fee. Safeguarding and lobbying Unions negotiate on collective agreements for employees and civil servants and protect your rights in working life. The unions negotiate on important questions on your behalf; fair salary, working hours, days off, equality, occupational safety and occupational health care. The agreements negotiated by unions guarantee working conditions that exceed statutory requirements. Often, people think rights to certain benefits such as holiday bonuses are statutory, when in fact, they are provided by collective agreements. Training and regional activities We organise free, highquality training on working life topics for our members, to familiarise them with career planning, job seeking and other important areas. Our members can take part in interesting regional events across Finland. Akava Special Branches has 14 regional groups. Discounts for membership card holders The membership entitles you to hundreds of discounts on, for example, traveling, driving, clothes, magazines and wellbeing products listed on the Jäsenedut.fi service. Jäsenedut.fi is a joint service intended for all Akava unions. Member communications E-newsletters help you stay tuned on what is happening in working life. Student members are sent a student newsletter four times a year. You will receive the Yhteenveto magazine to your home four times a year. The magazine is also available online at www.yhteenveto.fi Good to know Student members pay membership fees only from their salary. Membership fees are not paid from scholarships or benefits paid by Kela, such as study grant. The percentage of membership fee is determined by the member organisation. Union membership fee is tax-deductible. The membership fee can be paid directly by the employer, or the employee can pay for it him/herself. Do not throw away certificates of employment, payslips or any possible work schedules.
