Pure Bamboo, Green & Simple Bamboo Decking Installation & Maintenance Guide
INSTALLATION Installation Guidelines: Bamking recommends that all products be installed by a trained professional. Instructions are included as a reference only. Safety First: Please wear appropriate protective clothing and accessories, and take all steps to ensure a safe and successful installation. Frame Installation: Install deck frame according to local code specifications. Joist spacing must be a maximum of 16, with a minimum height clearance of 1 1/2 for proper ventilation. If installing deck on a diagonal, use 12 spacing for joists. Stair tread spacing should be 8 on centers. Acceptable Installation Methods: Face screw with grade 305 stainless steel 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 decking screw. *Pre-drilling is required for this method. For installation without pre-drilling you may use the Simpson Strong-Tie Deck-Drive DHPD Hardwood Screw, which can be inserted directly into the face of the board. When using the D02 Grooved edge product, biscuit style hidden fasteners (available from Bamking) will provide proper spacing on the sides. Install the first board as indicated above allowing 1/8 spacing for the ends of boards. Insert fastener into groove on the side of board, then push next board onto fastener at an angle and push into place. Install next fastener and repeat. When using D01 straight edge products, screws may also be inserted at a 45 degree angle into the sides of the board (the Camo Marksman system works well for this application). Page 1
INSTALLATION Cutting Boards: We recommend that all cuts be made with a chop saw equipped with a 150+ tooth carbide blade. All cuts must be sealed with an oil or water-based exterior decking sealer. Product may be cut at an angle, but cut only in straight lines. Install the First Board: Secure the first board using 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" stainless steel deck screws through the face of the board into the joist at a 90 degree angle to the joist. (See Image A) Image A *Please note - screws must not be installed within 1" of the ends or sides of the boards. Additional joist support must be added if necessary to keep screws at least 1" from the end of a board. (See Image B) Image B Install Additional Boards: If using D01 square edge profile, use spacers to provide at least 1/8" on sides and ends of deck boards. Continue inserting fasteners through face of boards at a 90 degree angle, or at a 45 degree angle into the sides of the boards. Page 2
INSTALLATION Install Additional Boards (Continued): When using D02 Grooved edge product, biscuit style hidden fasteners (available from Bamking) will provide proper spacing on the sides of the boards. Install the first board as indicated above allowing 1/8" spacing for ends of boards (See Image C). Insert fastener into groove on side of board, then push next board onto fastener at an angle and push into place (See Image D and Image E). Install next fastener and repeat. CLEANING & MAINTENANCE CAUTION: Power washers, chlorine bleach and heavy fungicides may cause damage to your deck and harm the environment. Before You Clean: Sweep or blow off your deck to remove any loose dirt or particles. If there are flowers, bushes, or shrubs near the deck, spray them off before, during and immediately after cleaning to remove any cleaner mix that may have been splashed from brushing or spraying deck. Cleaning Solution: HEAVY CLEANING: To remove heavy mold, mildew and stains, or to remove winter dirt/grime, pour one gallon of mold/mildew remover, deck stain remover or oxygen bleach into a 2-5 gallon pail with one gallon of water (1:1 mix) to clean approximately 400 square feet of decking. REGULAR CLEANING: If mold, mildew, or stains are not an issue and you simply want to clean and brighten your deck, add three gallons of water to one gallon of oxygen bleach (3:1 mix) to clean 1,200 square feet. Brushes: To spread liquid mix, use a soft nylon bristle scrub brush and long pole handle. A hand-pump sprayer can also be used to spread the mix. For heavier cleaning, a medium-coarse nylon bristled scrub brush may be used to agitate the bubbles deep into cracks, crevasses and grooves of the deck. Using a long pole handle will allow you to easily spread and agitate the mix without straining. It is recommended that you use a squeegee to wipe off excess water drops in order to prevent sun spots (sun drying bubbles of water can create small, dark circle spots). Cleaning Procedure: We recommend cleaning your deck in small sections to ensure that you can scrub and rinse the cleaning solution before it dries. Start with a 5' x 5' area and adjust as needed. Using a soft-bristled scrub brush or hand-pump style sprayer spread the mix evenly over the 5' square section. After creating a thick layer of bubbles, agitate the bubbles down and into the cracks, crevasses and grooves of bamboo surface. Let bubbles sit for 10-15 minutes, making sure you do not let bubbles dry on the area you are cleaning. Rinse bubbles off well using a hose and proceed to another area. Repeat until finished. Page 4
CLEANING & MAINTENANCE Not only is bamboo beautiful, but also it is also durable, natural, stable, and easy to maintain. With minimal care, your Bamking bamboo deck will retain it's beauty and performance for years to come. How to Improve the Life of your Deck: To help prevent mold and mildew, sweep your deck regularly to keep plank gaps free from debris, especially when pollen is heavy (typically spring and late summer). Keep your gutters clean. Overflow from a leaf-clogged gutter can be a potential source of mold and mildew growth. Keep the area under your deck well ventilated and free of materials that retain moisture; avoid the use of bark mulch under or around your deck. Plants in large flower pot or planter on your deck should be moved and swept beneath periodically to prevent mold or mildew from soil runoff and trapped moisture. Avoid getting lawn or plant fertilizer on your deck. If snow or ice accumulates on the surface of your deck, a plastic snow shovel may be used to remove them, but do not use a metal snow shovel as it may scratch the surface. Alternatively, you may use Calcium Chloride or rock salt to melt the snow and ice. To help prevent cooking stains, we suggest that grills be placed on a mat to reduce the deck s exposure to staining. All food spills should be removed as soon as possible. Do not use acetone or other solvents on Bamking bamboo products. We recommend that you apply an oil based deck stain/seal product once a year to maintain the color and appearance of your bamboo deck. Water based sealers are acceptable, but will not prevent the product from turning gray as well as oil based products. Before application of sealers, brush and clean the surface to remove dirt and dust. You may also apply a mold/mildew remover to eliminate any buildup that may have occurred. Page 5
