CHAPTER SEVEN In this Chapter, I will attempt to recap the Peter Steffen Family in Germany. The earliest record of the Steffen family is shown in the Losheim Germany family records book beginning 1729. Nicholas Steffen, born before 1720, married Anna Margaretha Müller before 1738. Together they had four children: a) Angela b. 13.09.1738 in Wahlen Germany b) Mathias b. 21.11.1740 in Niederlosheim married Maria Müller who was born 15.09.1747. They were married in Losheim 20.01.1764 c) Anna b. 15.12.1743 in Neiderlosheim d) Anna Maria b. 21.11.1746 in Niederlosheim Anna married three times. Since Müller was a very common name there is no record of a relationship between the wife of Mathias Steffen and his mother. After the death of Nicholas Steffen (date not recorded), Anna Margaretha Müller Steffen married again. Her second marriage date is recorded as 13.01.1750. Mathias Wilhelm and Anna Margaretha Müller Steffen Wilhelm had six more children between the years of 1750 and 1764. Mathias Wilhelm died 23.08.1795 and Anna Margarthia Müller Steffen Wilhelm died 14.04.1777. Their children were half brothers and sisters to Mathias Steffen 1740. Mathias is the father of Peter Steffen 1782. Peter Steffen emigrated from Germany with part of his family in 1841. 43

I have found no other records in Germany of any of Peter s siblings immigrating to 44

America thereby still making Peter Steffen 1782 the oldest of the Steffen family here in America. Other family names that I recognize here in our ancestry are Spanier, Schmidt and Dilschneider. Helena was not yet 5 months old when they arrived in New York. These three Steffen families were the first to arrive in America, 1840. They came eleven months before their Uncle Peter Steffen arrived with his family, their cousins and some of their children. Within just a year, 1840 1841, three generations had arrived in America. Peter Steffen, 1782, his children, grandchildren, nephews and their children. The fourth child of Johann Steffen 1771 did not leave Germany until October 3, 1860. There are other Steffen families or individual Steffens who have arrived from 1840 thru 1880 but I have not been able to establish that any other Steffens are related to Peter Steffen from the Saar region of Germany. I would be happy to hear from a Steffen cousin who can place these families here in the United States. 47

This has been a very difficult chapter to research and assemble in this form. I hope I have accurately recorded the dates and location of our ancestors the Steffen Family in America. 48
