1 HULT The Hult branch of the family is from Nederluleå (Lower Luleå) in Norrbotten County, Sweden. This area is also referred to as Swedish Lapland and is separated from Finland by the Gulf of Bothnia. The family lived in the communities of Svartbjörsbyn and Aengesby/Engesbyn. Until about 1800, when Lars Larsson became a soldier, the family used patronymic names (derived from the father s first name with the appropriate son or dotter suffix). 6 Innala Nikkala, Sweden is a small town (population 500 in 2005) located in the municipality of Haparanda in the county of Norrbotten. Haparanda is situated on the western side of the Torne River. 8 Generation 3: Christina Johansdotter Innala b. December 12, 1829 in Nikkala, Nedertorneå, Norrbotten, Sweden In 1851 Christina traveled by steamer to Vadsø, Norway. There she married Lars Johan Hult on August 6, Lars Johan Hult b. March 22, 1830 in Nederluleå, Norrbotten, Sweden d. April 8, 1866 in Vadsø, Finnmark, Norway Lars Johan Hult was the youngest of six children living in Luleå, Sweden. His father was a soldier in a rural farming area. The Swedish Household Examination record shows that Lars was working as a farm hand in Engesbyn by In 1848, he was working on a farm in nearby Sunderbyn. In 1853, Lars left Sweden for Vadsø, Norway. Vadsø (population 5,000 today) is located on the Varangerhalvøya peninsula. In the 19 th century, settlers migrated from Finland and the northern part of Sweden, which suffered from famine. 9 Between 1860 and 1862, Lars and Christina moved back to Sweden. They lived in Luleå Skårgärden, an archipelago just outside of Luleå. Jerine Christine was born there (listed as Regina in the parish register). By 1865, the family was living in Nikkala where Johan Petter was born. That same year, they moved back to Varanger/Vadsø, Norway. Lars Johan died in Varanger on April 8, The youngest child, Johan Petter, died a few months later on August 18, The records do not indicate a cause of death. Christina remained in Vadsø with her daughters, Marie Mathilde and Jerine Christine. The 1875 Vadsø census indicates that she was a widow, worked as a cleaner, and received financial support for the poor. The census also states that she has a son, Johan Poulsen Carlsberg born in 1868, living in the household. I have not found any records of him in the parish registers. On October 15, 1878, Christina married Moses Johansen Kollmainen in Vadsø. Moses was from Finland, and sixteen years younger than Christina. There are no further records of Christina. Her fate remains a mystery. Moses sailed from Trondheim on July 18, 1888 bound for Calumet, Michigan. He is listed as unmarried and appears to have traveled alone. On the 1910 USA census for Calumet, he is listed as married and the father of three children. The Norway church records for this period did not register all people moving in and out of the parishes. It is possible that Christina and Moses moved back to Finland. There are no death records for Christina in Norway. A genealogy researcher in Varanger suggested to me that since she is not listed in parish birth records as a godparent to any of her grandchildren born there, she was probably out of the area or deceased. I believe it is quite possible that Christine died in Finland, and Moses emigrated to America as a widower.
