This strategic framework gives effect to Otago Polytechnic's overarching strategic direction by setting a philosophy and strategic objectives for sustainability. BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT The Ministry of Education has identified that sustainability is a critical issue for New Zealand environmentally, economically, culturally, politically, and socially. We need to learn how to live smarter to reduce our impact on the environment so that our natural resources will be around for future generations. http://efs.tki.org.nz/ Otago Polytechnic is committed to responding to this call, as well as the New Zealand government s vision for our environment to be a clean, healthy and unique environment, sustaining nature and people's needs and aspiration. This vision for the environment is holistic. It recognises the interdependence and interaction of people and the natural and physical environment. 1 Otago Polytechnic has made a commitment to becoming a leader in the field of education for sustainability and sustainable business practise. We have chosen to be a sustainable organisation because it is the right thing to do and also to underpin our initiatives in education for sustainability. We seek to be a credible provider which models sustainability, and we also want to be the leading tertiary provider for education for sustainability in New Zealand. In 2013, it has reviewed its strategic direction and reinforced its commitment to sustainable practice underpinning its education and its operations. Sustainable practice is woven into all aspects of the strategy our vision, the strategic goals and indicators of success. This strategic framework provides more detail of how we intend to achieve those goals. To date, we have used approaches such as the internationally endorsed Natural Step framework to provide a system thinking approach and set of overarching benchmarks to help people understand the complexity of achieving sustainable practice. The Sustainable Practice 360 tools have provided the implementation and behaviour change processes to allow Otago Polytechnic to embed sustainable practice into its operational and organisational systems. Functioning in a sustainable manner covers many aspects of polytechnic operations. We strive to be leaders in the field of education for sustainable practice through embedding sustainable practice into the curriculum of all disciplines as well as offering internationally recognised qualifications in sustainable practice. We employ sustainable practice throughout our operations to do the right thing, reduce costs and change behaviour across the institution. We encourage staff to make healthy lifestyle choices that consider both the social and natural environment. Accordingly we encourage participation in a range of staff wellness programmes to create a resilient workplace environment. We foster and support staff professional learning opportunities to ensure they are able to deliver teaching of the highest quality to our students. Staff are encouraged to keep up to date with changes in their discipline and expand their knowledge through research and collaborative learning opportunities. This ensures the quality of our programmes, supports our goal of educational excellence, increases our reputation as an education provider and students benefit by graduating as sustainable practitioners. We offer specialist future focused sustainable practice courses and programmes to assist our students to become social conscious and environmentally responsible in the community. STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES FOR SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE OBJECTIVE 1 TO DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE PRACTITIONERS Our goal is that every graduate may practice sustainably and make a difference to the world. Our teaching and learning opportunities will ensure every student (regardless of programme or level) will graduate with the skills and knowledge to act as a 'sustainable practitioner'. We will contribute to the development of knowledge in sustainable practice through our staff and students being involved in research. OBJECTIVE 2 TO MODEL EVIDENCE BASED SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE IN OUR OPERATIONS Our goal is to minimize our environmental footprint, and to share our journey with others. We will ensure that the principles and practise of sustainable development are embedded across Otago Polytechnic and all its activities. OBJECTIVE 3 TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNITIES AND BUSINESSES TO EMBED SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE Our leadership will encourage others to embrace sustainable practices We will network throughout the region (and NZ) with businesses and our communities, sharing our knowledge and collaborating with others so that they develop their capability to practice sustainably. OBJECTIVE 4 TO ENSURE OUR ACTIONS BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITIES We will be a socially responsible organization, and make a difference in our community. Our communities will benefit from our actions. DEFINITIONS Sustainability Development that 'meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs (World Commission Education and Development, 1987). This implies a need for equity between generations and within generations. Sustainability viewed as a system thinking approach moves beyond competing views that promote sustainable economic growth, sustainable human development or ecological sustainability in isolation. An integrated approach is required but one that must consider the environment. Sustainable practitioner A Sustainable practitioner is able to apply frameworks of sustainable practice (ecological, social, political and economic) to the context of their industry or field of study, in order to challenge existing practices and develop more sustainable ways of operating. STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 2 - TO MODEL EVIDENCE BASED SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE IN OUR OPERATIONS Our goal is to minimize our environmental footprint, and to share our journey with others. We will ensure that the principles and practise of sustainable development are embedded across Otago Polytechnic and all its activities. WHAT ARE OUR ASPIRATIONS? To model evidence based sustainable practice within the daily social, economic, compliance and environmental operations of Otago Polytechnic. To minimise the impact of Otago Polytechnic s operations on our environment To minimise overall energy and water use across the institution To reduce CO2 Emissions To avoid overharvesting resources and limiting impact on biodiversity WHAT WILL WE DO TO ACHIEVE OUR ASPIRATIONS? Audit our practises and implement measurable improvements, and report them accurately Design waste out of our systems Minimize or make efficient use of energy ( transport, fuel, heating, electricity) and water Monitor and report our performance using quadruple bottom line accounting (Economic, Social, Environmental and Governance) Manage our supply chain to ensure we use the most sustainable suppliers Treat our staff well and fairly Communicate regularly our sustainable practice initiatives and progress to staff and our students Encourage staff and students to become involved in improving the sustainability of OP operations Design our programme delivery and other products and services as sustainably as possible Publish guidelines for staff on procurement Design and build facilities and alterations to the best sustainable standards possible Promote biodiversity on campus and beyond Minimise the ecological footprint of OP operations Include information on sustainability in staff induction and offer ongoing development in sustainable practice Ensure IT infrastructure supports sustainable practice HOW WILL WE KNOW WE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL?
