7.1 What Are Cells? You are made of cells. A cell is the basic unit of structure and function in a living thing. CHAPTER 7

Transcription:

The Invisible Universe s Cell Top Model (Cell Model, that is) One of the Most Popular reality TV shows in The Invisible Universe is Cell Top Model. This show develops the Top Cell Models in the Plant Kingdom and in the Animal Kingdom. Eukaryote Cells come from all over to compete and win one of the Modeling Contracts. Only the best looking Plant and Animal Cells can compete and the competition is FIERCE. The problem is Prokaryote Cells are left out of the competition! That is soooo not fair! Due to a landmark discrimination court case, Prokaryote Cells may compete this year in one of the existing shows. They can choose either the Plant cell competition or the Animal cell competition to compete in while the coordinators get ready to produce the Bacteria Cell Top Model show next season. You are a Modeling Agent and you are getting your best clients ready to submit their application to compete. You will need the following: A HEADSHOT a labeled Sketch of your chosen Bacteria/Prokaryote cell An APPLICATION to compete This will give details about your cell that will convince the committee to choose your cell for the finals 12 contestants. It includes: o The features of your cell and the functions of these features, o Qualifications to compete (proof of life processes MRS. NERG) o Background information o Work experience o A Venn Diagram comparing your cell and the other contestants o A written statement to the committee about why they should be chosen above their opponents Task: Choose a bacteria cell to represent, research the background, draw a picture and label it, complete the application and Venn Diagram, write a statement for your cell about whether it should be chosen to compete.

HEADSHOT SAMPLE PROVIDE A DETAILED LABELED HEADSHOT OF YOUR CHOSEN MODEL. FIND AN EXAMPLE BELOW. v Draw your cell (find an picture on line to trace or use as a model.) v Label ALL cell parts v The cell should be personified and be styled to look like a model. v The picture should be in color v The cell picture should be prominent on your poster. v Also attach the application, the Venn Diagram and explanation 1. 3. 2. 4. v Sample Poster arrangement 1. Headshot 2. Application 3. Venn diagram 4. Explanation

Modeling Agency Information Sheet: Model Name: (give scientific name and common name): NAME: Physical Description: (List the cell parts in the 1 st column) Cell parts Functions Processes Citizenship: (only living things are legal citizens) Is Model a Citizen or Legal Resident? Yes or No If Yes, provide proof. Provide FUNCTIONS of cell parts above in the second column and indicate corresponding PROCESSES from MRS.NERG. Write the word for the process in the third column.

Background: v Gender: Female or Male v Ethnicity: (what type of bacteria is this?) v Origin: (Where can this bacteria be found?) v Employment History: (Give the job of this bacteria, including its place of business) v Awards and Honors: (Give any notable historical or current news of significance) Which show do you feel this cell is best qualified to participate in? (circle one) Animal Top Cell Model Plant Top Cell Model

Complete the Venn Diagram to justify your choice. NAME:

Write an explanation of your Venn Diagram detailing why you chose plant or animal to compare your model to. Make sure you summarize the similarities and differences between the model and a plant or animal cell. Finally include a persuasive statement about why your cell should be chosen to be a finalist on the show.

Chose a model: Use the Internet to explore the kinds of prokaryotes and choose one you are interested in studying. Wikipedia is acceptable for this kind of general search. You may choose any prokaryote for your cell model. Below are some popular ones that cause human diseases. v Many cell model diagrams you find on the Internet contain more complex structures than we studied. You only need to label what you learned in our unit. v Also, if you cannot find an actual picture or diagram of your chosen prokaryote, just find out what shape it is and look for a generalized diagram of that shape of bacteria. v Use Google Images to help you locate a diagram to sketch.
