sfiles What is sfiles? sfiles gives you the ability to access your campus network drives (individual and shared) from home (i.e., outside the Northside network). You will be able to upload, download, and organize your files. sfiles replaces Netstorage as the web-based student file access vehicle for all secondary campuses (both AD and Novell campuses). Please keep in mind that once you download a file, you will only be able to view or modify that file if you have the application needed on the PC you are working on; e.g., You will need the Microsoft Publisher application on your home computer to modify a Microsoft Publisher document from school. What will I be able to do? Upload files Download files Delete files Create new files and folders Rename files and folders Cut, Copy, and Paste files and folders Search for files Getting Started Go to https://sfiles.nisd.net You will see a login window to connect with sfiles Enter your username: s###### ID preceded by a lower-case s ) (Your student Enter your password the first 4 letters of your last name followed by last 4 numbers of your social security number. The password is not casesensitive. Note If the student s last name has less than four letters, students should enter the entire last name followed by a 9 for each character less than four, before entering the last four of the social security number. For example, Bill Yi would enter yi99 as the first four letters of 1
his last name followed by the last four letters of his social security number. Bill Yi s password would be yi994321. If the student does not have a social security number on file with NISD, then the students password will be the first 4 letters of the last name followed by the last 4 numbers of the state issued ID number. Once logged into sfiles, you will see your S: and H: drives Getting to know the sfiles Toolbar 1. Folders 2. One level up 3. Create new folder 4. Create new file 5. Rename 6. Cut 7. Copy 8. Paste 9. Editing a File To edit a file, first download it to your computer. Make your changes, save, and then upload to the proper folder. For example, to edit the Word document FWPhotos.doc shown above, the student would first click [Get] and then save to the local computer. Note you can t open the file and edit directly from the storage area. You must download first, make changes, save and then upload again. Zipping and Unzipping Files Zipping files and folders into a single document is a great way to move multiple files and folders to your storage without having to recreate a folder structure or upload the files one by one. However, the zipping should take place at the local computer and not in sfiles. Here is an example. The student has a project in a folder called BrownEyedResources that is on the local computer. It contains several folders and multiple files. In Windows Explorer, the student would right-click the folder that needs to be compressed (the folder that contains the entire project) and select Send To > [Compressed (zipped) Folder] as shown below 5
The file will be added to the same folder as shown This zipped folder can then be uploaded to sfiles 6
To unzip the files, select the file and from the menu choose ZIP/UnZIP > [Extract to folder ] When you explore the unzipped folder you will find all the files and folders that were compressed 7
