Growth from One to Three Children ages one to three years change dramatically both in growth and development. Genes, nutrition, health, and experiences play roles in growth and physical development. 4

Nutritional Needs and Eating The eating habits and attitudes of one- to threeyear-olds will influence their eating habits throughout life. Children in this age group do not grow as rapidly and do not eat as much. Children must be taught to make nutritious food choices. 12

Physical Health and Wellness Parents and caregivers must keep children safe from accidents. Medical checkups are important for children in this age group. Immunizations need to be current. 15

Chapter Summary Section 10.1 Growth and Development from One to Three Heredity and environment play key roles in child development, affecting body size, eye color, and disease risk. A poor diet can cause tooth decay. As children grow, their senses develop, giving them greater awareness of their environment. Gross and fine motor skills improve as children get older. 18

Chapter Summary Section 10.2 Caring for Children from One to Three Some toddlers experience sleep disturbances. Children should be given nutritious foods and encouraged to feed themselves. Homes should be childproofed to help keep children safe. A child should be ready before toilet training is started. Parents should provide comfortable clothes and teach good hygiene. 19
