.............. Intelligent Remote Data Acquisition and Control Modules "A Complete Sensor to Serial Interface" T he family of Remote Data Acquisition and Control modules accepts real-world input signals that are converted to engineering units and are send, in printable ASCII characters to a controlling host computer over an RS-485 network. Most modules additionally include digital output channels that let them control real world events by producing similar digital or analog control outputs. modules are available to measure voltage, current, thermocouple, RTD and frequency. Other modules handle digital I/O or feature analog or relay output. Where applicable input isolation is 500 VRMS. modules provide direct connection to a wide variety of sensors and performs all necessary signal conditioning, scaling, linearization and conversion. Configuration is done remotely by a controlling host computer. All scaling, linearization and calibration and communications values are stored in EEPROM, eliminating the need for pots, switches or adjustment hardware. ELECTRODE FILM AGAINST NOISE modules are packaged in heavy duty ABS casings. The casings interior is coated with an electrode film to shield 's circuitry from extreme noise sources. PROTECTIVE COATING A thick protective coating, that covers both circuits and PCB, prolongs the lifetime of the modules and makes them resistant to humidity, salt spray and other harsh chemicals. Features RS-485/422 protocol, Industrial Standard Networking Two-wire multi-drop network High transfer speed (115.2 Kbps), long transfer distance (4000 ft.) Up to 256 modules on one network supervised by a single host computer Simple ASCII command/response protocol Communication is performed with printable ASCII characters Watchdog supervision of module and communication with host High voltage photo-isolators insure that fatal shocks are not passed on to other modules over the RS-485 network. Internal electrode coating against noise PCB and circuitry coating against harsh chemicals Unregulated +10 to +30 V DC to power modules` DIN rail or Wall Mount Applications Process Monitoring and Control Remote Sensing / Control Remote Data Logging Product Testing Industrial Process Control Security Control Building Automation Energy Control 7-2

Intelligent DA&C Modules Networking RS-232 ND-6520 RS-232 to RS-485 Converter RS-485 RS-485 NETWORKING The EIA-RS-485 protocol is a communication standard specially developped for multi-drop networks that have to communicate at high transfer rates over long distances. The RS-485 protocol is specified to communicate at rates up to 10 Mbps and over a distance of up to 4000 feet (1200 m) RS-485 uses differential transmission on a balanced pair of wires (twisted pair). The ease of wiring of twisted pair has made RS-485 the most popular and widely spread means of communication in industry. In places where strong noise still could cause interference, shielded twisted pair cabling should be used.......... Single Segment Network Terminator NUDAM'S RS-485 IMPLEMENTATION Each module contains a halfduplex RS-485 transceiver that is used to communicate with the host computer. The quarter-unit-load of these transceivers allows up to 128 modules to be connected on a single segment without need for a repeater. To ensure error free communication, a slew rate limiter on every transceiver minimizes EMI and reduces reflections of improperly terminated cabling. Networks can be configured as single segment or multi-segment, where every trunk line is connected with a repeater to the main segment TRANSPARENT RS-485 CONTROL EQUALS HALF DUPLEX RS-232 Just a single pair of wires is needed for RS-485 since 's Repeater and Converter modules automatically sense the direction of incoming data. This allows them to correctly control the RS-485 bus direction without the need for an extra pair of handshaking wires. Data + Data - RS-485 Receiver Driver Communication Direction Switch Controller RS-485 Bus Direction Control RS-485 Receiver Driver Data + Data - Since the sensing circuitry makes RTS and CTS signals obsolete, host computer software, written for Half Duplex RS-232 communication, can be used without any modification. This means that can be integrated, without problem, into existing installations or can replace them altogether. Software Control ASCII COMMAND/RESPONSE Only the host computer can generate commands while modules can only respond. All communication between host computer and modules is performed in printable ASCII characters. Every high level programming language that supports ASCII string functions (such as C, Pascal, BASIC) can be used. modules can therefore be controlled by any type of host computer. ERROR CHECKING 's command/response protocol can add two additional characters to every string, offering the possibility to include a checksum of the string itself. This allows verification that data send was the same as data received. WATCHDOG TIMERS modules contain watchdog supervisory circuits that will automatically reset a module when the system fails. Additionally, a user programmable software timer can provide a "safe output" in case communication with the host computer or the host computer itself fails. THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE Since modules are compatible with ADAM modules, they can be substituted or mixed and matched without any problem. Next to support for popular SCADA applications such as LABtech, FIX32 and Intouch, modules come with their own DLL and DDE support for Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows NT DIN-rail Mounting Panel/Wall Mounting 7-3

Intelligent DA&C Modules Software and Driver Support REMOTE CONFIGURATION SOFTWARE A Windows based configuration utility is provided to easily configure and calibrate your modules. The utility supports the following functions : - Module scanning - COM port setting - Module configuration - Module calibration - Terminal emulation and Monitoring - Help screens NUDAM'S COMMAND/RESPONSE PROTOCOL There are three categories of commands. General commands --- The first category includes commands that deal with module configuration, identification, initialization. Every modules can respond to these commands. Functional commands --- these commands explicitly refer to a module's specific functions such as digital I/O, analog I/O, counting etc. Modules can only respond to commands that their hardware (and firmware) support. Special commands --- includes control of programmable watchdog timer, safe values and programmable leading codes. The only node in the network that can issue commands is the host computer. When a command has been send the host computer waits for the addressed module to respond. The majority of the commands contain destination address, command identification and data. Responses normally only contain the responding module's address and data. An example how a command/response sequence would look follows below: command : #061<CR> response : >+1.6888<CR> The command orders an analog input module at address 06 (Hex) to return the value of the input data at channel 1. The module responds with 1.6888 V......... DLLs work in combination with any Windows programming language that allows DLL calls; such as Visual C/C++ and Visual Basic. DLLs (Dynamic Link Libraries) are an important aspect of Windows. A DLL contains functions that your executable program can call during execution. When your program needs a function that is not in the executable file, Windows loads the dynamic link library (the DLL), making all of its functions available to your application. 's DLL supports Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT. NUDAM DDE SERVER To meet the open architecture of several famous Windows NT based MMI/SCADA software packages, modules come with DDE Server support. The Administration I/O DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) server is a Window-based application program. It takes advantage of DDE, a build-in Windows communications service. This seamless software and hardware integration gives users a comprehensive solution in industrial automation. How to Link with FIX32 and InTouch The DDE server can acquire data from the modules through RS-232 serial ports and passes the data to FIX32 or InTouch via the hot link DDE server. Through the DDE protocol, FIX32 or InTouch can also pass control and configuration commands to the modules. The System Configuration is shown below. Modules RS-232 Ordering DDE SERVER D DE Excel, Database, ODBC... DDE InTouch Fix32 APPLICATION SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT Because all commands and response are ASCII-based every high-level language (such as C, Pascal or BASIC) can be used to write application software. q ND-DLL6 : Dynamic Link Libraries for Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 q ND-DDE6 : Dynamic Data Exchange for Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 DLL Driver 's DLL (dynamic link library) is a Microsoft Windows library module that is linked to your application program at run-time. When linked, the DLL becomes part of your program, giving it additional capabilities and facilities. 7-9
