VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTIONS 2011-2012 ***PLEASE TAKE HOME FOR YOUR REFERENCE**** Accelerated Reader: AR is a program offered to students to foster a love of reading. Students read selected books and take tests to earn AR points. Volunteers are needed to meet once every 2 weeks for approximately 2 hours to tally AR Points, update the wall chart, and distribute prizes. Art Room: Volunteers are needed to assist the art teachers with any special projects they may have throughout the year. Balloon Crew: This is our decorating team. We do have a helium tank which we use for nearly every event that has cause for decorations. Volunteers are needed to help decorate at various events throughout the year. Banking: Banking is offered to our students once a week as a way to teach them about financial matters. Volunteers are needed to help students make deposits for about 1 hour each Thursday beginning at about 7:40 am. Born To Read: This is a program that encourages a love for reading specifically for our kindergarten students. Volunteers are needed to meet once every six weeks to tally reading logs and distribute prizes. The time commitment is minimal, and what a great way to reward a child s commitment to reading! Environmental Program: Volunteers are needed to help advertise Recycle Day in November, the Cartridges for Kids recycle contest twice a year, and promote and help with an EPA poster contest. The time commitment is flexible, and most of the work can be done from home. This is a wonderful program that teaches our students how to be more environmentally friendly! Fall Family Fun Night: This is a terrific event for Exley families in September, sponsored by the PTA Board. It s a fun-filled night of games and relays and a great way to meet other Exley families! Volunteers are needed to help organize the event (there are one or two planning meetings), help set up games the day of the event, and work one hour shifts during the event. Family Fun Run: This is another fantastic opportunity for family fun at Exley! Volunteers are needed to help the Coordinator organize the event and solicit water and snack donations. We also need help the morning of the event to sign in our Exley exercisers. Fall Fundraiser: Exley has one fundraiser in the fall of each year. This year we are having a Boosterthon, which is a fundraising fun run. We will have a week of fun activities for the kids based on character traits and team building. Volunteers are needed for the day of the run and the next 2 days to count and tally donations. Family to Family Program: This is a fantastic new program to Exley. You could be a founding member! Experienced Exley families are encouraged to sign up to be mentors to a new Exley family. Each family is asked to make an introductory phone call and be available to answer any questions the new family may have. What a great opportunity to really get to know another family! Green Thumb Club: This is a great opportunity for those of you with green thumbs. This could be working parents, dads, or teenagers. Volunteers are needed to help take care of the Exley PTA garden. This entails an hour or so of work a week in summer and spring months, less in the winter.
Greeters Desk: Volunteers are needed to work shifts greeting families in the school lobby. Times are flexible, and duties may include answering questions about Exley and helping the office staff deliver items to classrooms. Mondays and Fridays are busy days in the front office, and any help for any amount of time is always much appreciated! Holiday Store: Exley provides a holiday store for students to shop for family members for one week in December. Volunteers are needed to help staff the store before school and during lunch hours and help the children pick out and pay for their purchases. It is always special to see each child s excitement as they holiday shop! Junior Achievement: This is a grade-level specific program provided by the district. Volunteers teach one economic-based curriculum lesson every 6 weeks. District training is mandatory for first time volunteers. Grade-level specific training is also provided at Exley. Library: Volunteers are needed throughout each day to help children with book selections. Times are flexible, and you may choose to work during your child s scheduled library time (40 minute commitment once a week). This is a great way to spend some quality time with your child s class and get to know our wonderful librarians! Lunchroom: The lunchroom is a fast-paced and enjoyable volunteer experience, and the more volunteers, the better! Volunteers are needed to help children open lunch items and assist with general lunchroom duties. Times are flexible, and you may choose to work during your child s scheduled lunch time. Helping in the lunchroom is a terrific way to spend time getting to know many different students! Music Room: Volunteers are needed to assist music teachers with special projects of the year. This includes helping with backdrops, sets, and costumes for two music programs (1st and 4th grades). The programs are in November and March. This is a terrific job if you have a talent for creative design!! Nurse: The week of vision and hearing screening is a busy time for our school nurse, and a volunteer who is certified in vision and hearing screening would be a huge help! Extra assistance filling hand sanitizers around the school may be needed throughout the year. Parent Breakfasts: Exley s PTA Board sponsors a Doughnuts with Dad breakfast in the Fall semester and a Muffins with Mom breakfast in the Spring semester. Volunteers are needed to help set up and clean up the events. This is typically a two hour time commitment each event. This would be a great volunteer opportunity for working parents. PE: Volunteers are needed to assist our PE teachers with field day events and our box top program that helps raise money for our PE Department. This includes cutting out box tops once every six weeks, one meeting with the PE teachers in late September, and attending three field days. What a wonderful way to get involved in your child's school and share in the fun of field day!! Rebate Programs: Volunteers are needed to help the Rebate Coordinator organize Spirit Nights at local restaurants (one night each six weeks), maintain and advertise rebate programs with local grocery chains, and cut and count Campbell Soup labels. Times are flexible, and work may be done from home. Funds raised by rebate programs help our PTA Board purchase special items for our school. School Store: Exley provides a special school store once a month for students to purchase items during the lunch hours. Volunteers are needed to staff the store and help children pick out and pay for purchases. This is another great way to get to know many different children at Exley! Times are flexible and may be done during your lunch hour.
Science Enrichment: Exley has a wonderful Science Enrichment program that is unique to our school. Each grade level has one lesson per each six week period. Volunteers are needed for 40 minutes per each six week period to assist your child s class. Training is minimal and provided the day of the event. The science lessons make science FUN! This is a wonderful way to spend time with your child and help other students too! Spirit Wear: Every year Exley designs new spirit wear shirts for the students to wear each Friday. Volunteers are needed at the beginning of the year to help sell shirts at special events and to fill and deliver t-shirt orders during the school day. We are proud Exley families and love to see the children representing our wonderful school through spirit wear. Spring Fling: This is one of Exley s biggest volunteer endeavors! Much of our PTA funds are raised during our Carnival in April. Volunteers are needed during the weeks leading up to the Carnival to help plan the event -- Attendance at planning sessions is helpful. Volunteers are also needed the day of the Carnival to assist in setting up booths, work one hour shifts, and assist in taking down booths. Helping with Exley s Spring Fling is a wonderful way to have fun with the children of our community! Sunshine Committee: Exley PTA would like to help out parents in either long term or short term need with meals. If you are someone that could offer 1 to 2 meals this school year, this would be of great service to others in need. Teacher Appreciation Week: This is another large volunteer endeavor! We really value our terrific teachers and hope to let them know during this special week in May. We provide special lunches, breakfasts, door prizes and other treats for the teachers each day of Teacher Appreciation Week. Volunteers are needed beginning in January to help the Coordinator organize and plan the events, solicit donations from local businesses, and attendance at several planning meetings is helpful. Volunteers are needed during the week to help set up for special luncheons or breakfasts. During Teacher Appreciation Week, the time commitment is flexible, and volunteers are greatly appreciated for any time they can give. This is really a wonderful week to celebrate the terrific job our teachers are doing with our children! Teacher Hospitality: Every six weeks volunteers organize a special themed luncheon for the teachers. Each luncheon is sponsored by a specific grade level, and volunteers from that grade are needed to assist with donations and set up. Each Exley family in that grade will receive information about dates, times and requested items via ENews or your homeroom parent. The volunteer commitment is flexible You may choose to attend the event or send in a donated item with your child. These special luncheons are a great way to show our teachers just how much we appreciate them! Variety Show: Each year students at Exley organize and perform in a variety show in January. Volunteers are needed to help with promotion of the event, auditions, rehearsals, and the final performance. You will be amazed at what our students can do! Welcome Back Coffee: These two events are held in September and January to welcome new and returning families to our school and take place before the start of the school day. Volunteers are needed to help set up the event, and the time commitment is minimal. This is another great opportunity to spend time getting to know other Exley families! Workroom Rotation: Volunteers are needed to monitor the teacher workroom and assist in making copies and transparencies. A work schedule is established so volunteers may choose their week day and time. This is a volunteer opportunity for those that prefer a consistent time and day to work. All training is provided. Youth Protection: This is a volunteer opportunity to help plan and implement Red Ribbon Week in October. Home room parents help decorate each classroom door as Exley participates in the nation s largest drug prevention campaign.
