Welcome to the Counselor s Corner! Stephanie Carriero, M.A. -School Counselor- Stone Ranch Elementary

Stone Ranch Elementary Address: 16150 4S Ranch Parkway, San Diego, CA 92127 Telephone: 858-487-8474 Counseling Office Telephone: 858-487-8474 Ext. 4805 Principal: Lisa Danzer Assistant Principal: Adam Carlin Student Services Assistant: Liz Bowers Email: Ebowers@powayusd.com Website: https://www.powayusd.com/pusdsres/

I was born and raised in California, living in both San Diego and Orange Counties. I attended San Francisco State University (B.A.) and the University of San Diego where I earned my Master of Arts in Counseling/PPS credential. I have had the pleasure of working in PUSD for over 10 years at approximately 10 different elementary schools. I am currently the school counselor at Stone Ranch and Del Sur, as well as at the PUSD s Caring Connections Center. I believe whole-heartedly that every child needs a champion in order to succeed not just in school but in life! I strive to be each of your child s champions! In my leisure time I enjoy the outdoors, running, hiking, yoga and spending time with my family. About Me

Foundation of Guidance Program: Based on ASCA National Standards Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span. Academic Career Personal/Social

School Mission Statements District s Mission College and Career Readiness for All Students The Poway Unified School District is a national leader in public education serving as a gateway to our students future. Our students graduate prepared to succeed in college and in a wide range of post-secondary options in order to work and live productively. We hold high expectations for all students. We provide strong core programs, and multiple pathways to ensure each student acquires the key content skills and knowledge, the necessary habits of mind, and the behaviors and attitudes essential for their future success. We hire, retain, and support the highest quality staff from diverse backgrounds to ensure our students learning. We use our resources to achieve extraordinary results. We seek both practical innovations and continuous improvements to the learning environment for students, parents, and staff. We develop working partnerships with parents and the community to support our mission. Elementary Counseling Mission The Poway Unified School District Counselors support the developmental needs of all students utilizing a datadriven system of accountability that fosters college and career readiness along with personal and social growth in order to prepare them for an ever-changing global society. Counselors advocate for a safe school environment where all students are connected to caring adults who are invested in their future. Furthermore, counselors provide the direct guidance and personal/social support services to families and students of PUSD. These include counseling, referring and consulting to enhance the rigorous, relevant and equitable access to educational experiences.

What Does A School Counselor Do?

Counseling Services: Classroom Guidance- An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Counselors attempt to prevent unfavorable situations before they occur and/or address appropriate decision making skills. I work with an entire class on specific skills, such as empathy, conflict resolution, emotion management, study skills (Second Step Curriculum) Small Group Counseling and Guidance- In some instances, students help each other by working in small groups (usually 3-6 students) with leadership from the counselor. Group counseling allows students to share ideas about specific issues such as peer relationships, self-esteem, death, and divorce. Individual Counseling and Guidance- Counselors work with students individually on specific educational and personal concerns. The primary purpose of these sessions is to help students explore their concerns, make appropriate plans of action, and follow through with these plans.

Why Do We Need Elementary School Counselors? Counselors Help Students: Adjust to a new school/grade/teacher. Find answers to their concerns. Make school a more rewarding and successful experience by fostering a positive relationship with another adult at school. Develop and enhance skills in decision making, problem solving, conflict resolution, and interpersonal communication. Develop good study habits and achieve a higher academic performance. Help students with career development. Counselors Help Parents: Coordinate the efforts of home and school. Discuss specific issues related to children such as attitudes towards school, academic growth, personal and emotional development, relationships with other students, and reactions to changes in family circumstances. Provide a link between families and community services when necessary. Help find early solutions to students' problems.
