Cleaning Out The PE Erin Sabyan 2011 Midwest Elementary Teacher of the Year 2009 IAHPERD Elementary TOY erin.sabyan21@gmail.com ****************************************************************************** Hyper Ball Objectives: The objective of this game is to demonstrate teamwork, sportsmanship and increase cardiovascular endurance through a fun, energetic game. Equipment: 10 Tennis Balls, 20 Medium cones, 2 large cones, pinnies Class Organization: The class will be divided into 2 teams. One team will use pinnies to identify the team they are on. Each team will start on their side. Each team will have 10 cones at the end of their side. A large cone will be placed in the corner on their side to represent the jail. Each team will start with 5 tennis balls on 5 of their cones. Game Procedure: On the signal to begin, students are allowed to cross the center line to enter the other team s territory. Once in the territory, they may be tagged with or without a tennis ball. If tagged they will head to that team s jail. If they have a tennis ball in their hands, the tennis ball goes back on the cone and the student will head to jail. Only one person is allowed in the jail at a time. If someone is in the jail, the students will high five and switch places. If the student is successful, grabbing a tennis ball and bringing it back to their side, they will place the tennis ball on a cone. The first team to have all 10 tennis balls on their cones, wins that round Billy Bob Bones Relay

Objectives: The objective of this activity is to help students learn the location of the major bones in the body. Increase cardiovascular endurance and increase teamwork and communication. Equipment: 6 Hula Hoops, (1 hula hoop per group), 30 Poly spots (one poly spot per person), 6 sets of bodies (hands, feet, legs, arms, ribs, pelvis and skull), 4 cones to identify boundary lines, 1 hula hoop to house bones. Class Organization: The class will be divided into 4 to 6 groups depending on class size. Place each group in the corner, around a hula hoop. Each team member will stand on a poly spot. They will decide the order. The bones are located in the middle of the gym inside a hula hoop. Cones are placed in the corners of the gym to identify boundary lines. Object of the game: To be the first team to build a body successfully. Procedure: Divide the class into groups and explain the directions. Show the class a finish body. On the signal Go the first person will run to the middle and grab a body part and bring it back to the group. The group will perform the exercise off the bone. Next the group will do the transition exercise of 5 jumping jacks. Now the next person in line will go to the middle and grab a body part they need and bring it back, perform the exercise and then the transition exercise of 5 jumping jacks. They keep doing this until the body is built. At that time they do their 5 jumping jacks and then start running around the outside of the gym until all groups are finished. ABC s of Handwashing Germ Epidemic Objective: The purpose of this activity if to teach students how germs are spread and how to properly wash our hands. Improve Cardiovascular fitness. Equipment: 8 Hula Hoops, 30 yarn balls, 2-4 green yarn balls, Germs Class Organization: To introduce the lesson, the class will be bunched together to listen to the book and explain the importance of handwashing to stop the spread of germs. For the activity, hula hoops will be lined up on the side (bathrooms) and the students will start in the scattered formation. Game Procedure: A bucket of yarn balls is placed in a safe location. Pick one student to start as a germ. On the signal Go students will run around the gym trying to avoid being tagged by the germ. If tagged, the student goes to the bucket and takes a yarn ball. They are now considered a germ. Keep playing until all students are germs. After the game, discuss how quickly germs can be spread and ask for suggestions on how to avoid spreading germs. This will take you to ABC S of Handwashing. Object of ABC S Handwashing: The object of the game is to properly identify good handwashing habits. A demonstration of the technique is used to show students how we apply soap, sing our ABC S as we wash all areas of our hands, wrist and lower arms, then properly rinsing off the soap ending with drying our hands. Students will demonstrate this technique through a game of tag.

Game Procedure: Identify two to four taggers (green yarn balls to identify taggers) to act as the germ. Hula Hoops are lined up on the side to represent bathrooms. On the signal Go, students run around the gym trying to avoid germs. If tagged by a germ, the student must go to the bathroom to wash their hands using the ABC technique. Upon completion, students may return to the game. Play for several minutes and then change taggers. Locomotor skills can be changed for a variation. During the game, use visual observations to make sure students are properly washing their hands, correct if needed. Soccer Pin Frenzy Objectives: The objective of this game is to enhance soccer skills in a game like situation while stressing the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork. Equipment: 8 Bowling Pins, 3 or 4 Nerf Soccer Balls, Pinnies Class Organization: The class is divided into teams. Each team then picks three players to start as goalies. Each team decides on three players to start out as goalies. Place 4 soccer balls in the center of the gym. Each team starts on their own side, with a player at each ball for the face off. On the signal to begin, each team passes the ball down the gym, trying to score a goal by knocking down a bowling pin in the goal box. As a goal is scored, the team that had the goal scored on them loses a goalie. Place each team on each side of the gym. Each team/side starts with 3 bowling pins, 1 large cone with a whiffle ball on top. Procedure: Divide the class into 2 teams. Each team has their own side of the gym. Located at the end of the gym on both sides is a large cone with a whiffle ball on top. Place a long line marked either by tape or by cones about 3 feet in front of the cone and place 3 bowling pins on the line. Place another line about 4 feet in front of the bowling pins. Players cannot cross this line except to place a bowling pin on the line in front of the cone. On the signal to begin, each team starts rolling gator skin balls to the other side trying to knock down the bowling pins. If they knock a bowling pin down, they run across the middle line and pick up the bowling pin. They bring the bowling pin back to their side and place the bowling pin on the line. Once all bowling pins are captured, the team starts throwing balls at the cone to knock the whiffle ball off. If the other teams captures a bowling pin, throwing must stop and rolling begins again. If a team captures all 6 pins and knocks the ball off, they are King of the Hill. Crazy Ball Objectives: The objective of this game is to use accurate throws to get the ball down the length of the gym to end zone and inside the hula hoop using good teamwork. Equipment: 8 to 10 Rhino Skin Balls, 6 Hula Hoops and Color Pinnies Class Organization: The class needs to be divided into two teams. One team will wear pinnies for easy identification. Each team must choose one person per hoop, three hoops per team. One foot must be in the hoop. The rest of the class is scattered around the gym. Each team will have three hoops at each end of the gym. Game Procedure: After dividing the class into two teams, have each team choose someone to start in each hula hoop. The rest of the class needs to scatter around the gym. Throw out 8 to 10 balls, each team starts with the same amount of balls. On the signal to begin, each team starts to throw the ball to their hula hoop. Once a student has a ball in their hands, they are not able to move except to pivot in order to get into position to throw the ball. This continues until the team is able to get the ball to their teammate in the Team s hula hoop that will place the ball into the hula hoop. The other team may place a foot in the hula hoop, grab a ball and throw to a team member. After throwing the ball, the person must leave the hula hoop. This continues until time is up.

Ground Rules: Players may not run with the ball, if this happens the ball is turnover to the other team. If the ball is dropped, the other team gets the ball. Only one team member allowed in the hula hoop to receive the ball to place in the hula hoop. Once a player gets the ball from the hula hoop, throws the ball, they must leave the hoop. Balls are allowed to be intercepted. Team Pin Ball Equipment: One Rhino Skin ball, cones, Sleeve-its and 2 bowling pins Class Organization: Divide the class into 2 teams. Players will take position on their own side. The game begins with a jump ball and the team with the ball proceeds to move the ball towards their opponent s goal by passing to teammates. When a team is in range of the bowling pin, they can throw the ball at the bowling pin to knock it over in order to score a point. Object of the game: The 2 teams will attempt to score as many points possible by throwing the ball into their opponents s goal. If the ball stikes and knocks down the pin, a point is earned. While passing the ball toward the goal the opposing team may guard the offensive team by using basketball defensive skills. If the offensive team throws an incomplete pass or the ball goes out of bounds then the defense becomes the offensive team. Ground Rules: 1. Game begins with Jump Ball. 2. incomplete pass results in an imcomplete pass. 3. No player allowed in goal box. 4. Failed shot toward goal results in a turnover. 5. Teamwork is a MUST!
