Anne & Mary Wenstrom Physical Education Unit: Volleyball Grades 4-6 INTRODUCTION: Part I of this unit contains all of the skills that will be presented. Part II consists of many skill drills that will be used to practice the skills that have been taught. Part III includes the games, or modified games that will be used to reinforce the sills taught. Part IV contains the movement exploration and grade progressions that will be used. RATIONALE FOR USING THIS TYPE OF UNIT: 1. The skills are presented from simple to complex to game-like for grades This unit provides volleyball skills that could be used in game situations. 3. The unit offers a variety of skills and games that lead to the students appreciation of Volleyball. VOLLEYBALL BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the unit, students will be able to: 1. Use proper form and technique while performing the skills in class. 2. Participate in all drills to increase accuracy in the game of Volleyball. 3. Name the key words of the skills that we cover as a class. Underarm pass (Bump) Set Underarm Serve Blocking Spike SKILLS TO BE COVERED:

GAME LIKE ACTIVITIES (LEAD UP GAMES) UNDERARM PASSING 2 vs. 2 passing, setting Start with a toss over the net, team can only hit ball twice, pass then set, when a point is lost that team is out and next team moves in. SETTING 6 Person Set Drill -3 people on 10 foot line, and 3 other on the end line -First person in line sets the ball to the other line, and when they are done setting, he/she runs to the right side and goes behind the other line. -The lines keep moving, setting back and forth to try to reach a high goal of setting with the group. UNDERARM SERVE King/Queen of the Court -Teams of three -Object of the game is to make it to the far side of the net and stay there. -The team on the near side of the net serves the ball to the other side. -Play the volley out. -Whichever side cannot return the ball over the net leaves the court. -If the team on the far side won then they stay on the court. -If the team on the near side won then they go to the far side of the net. -The next team in line then enters the near side and serves the ball. -Team rotates servers every time. BLOCKING Partner Blocking Drill -Each student gets a partner. One partner throws the ball in to the air to the other partner who works on blocking technique. Each student practices correct blocking form 10 times and then the partners switch roles. -Partners perform the same drill, but now use the net. Partners are on opposite sides of the net. One partner throws the ball over the net and the other partner practices the blocking technique. Each partner practices blocking 10 times and then partners switch roles. SPIKING Set Spike Drill -Two lines (one on each sideline) -Players on the left side will have the balls and they will toss their balls to the setter who will set the ball to the net to be hit. -The spiker will complete the approach and spike. They will attempt to spike the ball over the net. -Players on the right side will shag the balls then join the left line.

Student Competencies Cognitive 1. Students will pass a written exam covering the key points of all skills at 70% proficiency Psychomotor 1. Students will show improvement in all skills as measured by 3 skills tests administered at the beginning, middle and end of the unit. 2. Students will show appropriate participation in all activities as measured by attendance and teacher evaluation. Affective 1. Students will demonstrate good sportsmanship and etiquette by giving classmates at least 2 positive comments each class period. 2. Students will demonstrate the value of volleyball as a lifelong fitness activity by writing a paragraph on their fitness and this unit. Safety: Make sure balls are put away and not rolling on ground. 8 Basic Rules: Players and Rotation: When the ball is not in play, the players must remain in the proper rotation order, which establishes the sequential service order. Proper rotation order (6 on 6) establishes three front row and three back row players. The back row players may not legally enter the front court attack area to block or attack the ball over the net. When the ball is dead, players may not overlap with a player who is in an adjacent position. Adjacent refers to the player in the corresponding position on the opposite row (example: center back with center front), plus the teammate(s) next to that player on the same row (example: center back with both left back and right back.) The players all rotate one position clockwise following a rally in which they win the right to serve (side-out). Serve: The player who rotates to the right back position serves, or if at the start of the game, is the first server. The serve is initiated from within the serving area and behind the boundary line. The objective is to serve the ball across the net into the opponent s court. It is a fault (illegal) if the ball contacts the net, or the antenna, or does not land in the court. Playing the Ball: Each team is entitled to a maximum of three contacts each time the ball crosses into their court. A ball contacting the block does not count as one of the three allowable contacts. No player may play the ball twice in succession, except if they contacted the ball as a blocker. The ball may not visibly come to rest; if it does, it is considered a held ball (fault). A held ball frequently results when a player uses the hands in executing an overhand pass. The ball may not be guided, lifted, or pushed in an effort to redirect it, nor may the ball contact any part of the body below the waist. Net Play: A player may not contact any part of the net, or it is a fault. A ball contacting the net is considered playable other than on the serve. A player may reach across the net to contact the ball on the opponent s side, provided it was attacked by the opponent. Likewise, a player may cross the net when attacking the ball, provided part of it was on the attacker s side when it was contacted. Opponents simultaneously blocking the ball may result in a held ball, which is then replayed with no point scored (play-over). A player may contact the ball on the opponent s side underneath the net while attempting to save the ball. The boundary line below the net separating the court restricts players from stepping into the opponent s area. Standing on the line is legal as long as part of the foot is in contact with the line. Any other part of the body on the floor and across the line is illegal. Scoring: The serve starts play, and the objective is to keep the ball from contracting one s own floor and, without violating the rules, rally until the opponents fail. When the team serving wins the rally, a point is scored. If not serving and the rally is won by the nonserving team, they earn a side out, rotate, and serve next. The first team to score 15 points and be ahead by at least 2 points wins the game. A match consists of either winning 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 games.

Terms Bump- It is utilized to pass the serve, play balls below the waist, play hard driven balls, and contact balls located far from the player. Set- Most controllable of the ball-handling skills. Used for accurately passing any ball above the head to a teammate and for the setting technique of passing the ball to an attacker with specific height, trajectory, and placement. Under arm Serve- Is the process of getting the ball over the net to start the volley. Used by swinging the arm under in a pendulum motion. More accurate for beginning students. Can only score when your team is serving. Over arm Serve- Process of throwing ball up in the air and hitting the ball with it above head. The striking arm action on the toss resembles an overhand throwing motion. Can only score when your team is serving. Block- Is used to counter a forceful attack defensively. Accomplished by jumping and positioning the hands above and over the net, decreasing the area available for the attacker to drive the ball downward forcefully into the blocker s court. Game Strategy- Process of deciding what type of game that the team will play. Have both Defensive strategies and Offensive strategies. Defense- Process of preventing offensive team from scoring.

Exploration Statements For Skills Covered 1. Bump- -Can you show me how to bump the ball? -Can you show me how to hold your hands when you bump the ball? 2. Set- -Can you show me your window to set the ball? -Can you show me where your elbows are when you bump the ball? 3. Underarm Serve- -Can you show me the starting position before you serve the ball? -Can you show me what part of the body you hit the ball with? 4. Blocking- -Can you show me the proper footwork in blocking? -Can you show me proper form of the arms when blocking? 5. Spike- -Can you show me what part of the body you hit the ball with on the spike? -Can you show me the proper footwork with the spike?
