Air Force Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certification Program Most military aircraft maintenance technicians are eligible to pursue Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) certification based on documented evidence of 30 months practical aircraft maintenance experience in airframe and powerplant systems per Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 65- Certification: Airmen Other Than Flight Crew Members; Subpart D-Mechanics. The Air Force A&P Certification Program was developed to bridge gaps between a technician s Air Force education, training and experience and FAA eligibility requirements per Title 14, CFR, Part 65.77. This FAA-approved program is a voluntary program which benefits the technician and the Air Force, with consideration to professional development, recruitment and retention, and transition. Completing this program, outlined in the program Qualification Training Package (QTP), will assist technicians in meeting FAA eligibility requirements and being better-prepared for the FAA exams. Four-Tier Program: The program is a four-tier training and experience program. These elements are required for program completion and important for individual development, knowledge assessment, meeting FAA certification eligibility, and preparation for the FAA exams: On-The-Job Training (OJT). Three Air University Online Specialized Courses. Documented evidence of 30 months practical experience in airframe and powerplant systems. Four years Time-In-Service. Program Eligibility: Active duty, guard and reserve technicians who possess at least a 5-skill level in one of the following aircraft maintenance AFSCs are eligible to enroll: 2A0X1, 2A090, 2A2X1, 2A2X2, 2A2X3, 2A3X3, 2A3X4, 2A3X5, 2A3X7, 2A3X8, 2A390, 2A300, 2A5X1, 2A5X2, 2A5X3, 2A5X4, 2A590, 2A500, 2A6X1, 2A6X3, 2A6X4, 2A6X5, 2A6X6, 2A690, 2A691, 2A600 (except AGE), 2A7X1, 2A7X2, 2A7X3, 2A7X5, 2A790, 2A8X1, 2A8X2, 2A9X1, 2A9X2, and 2A9X3. Note: Technicians who previously gained FAA authorization to test for A&P certification are not required to enroll and complete this program. Technicians who cross-trained out of aircraft maintenance are eligible to enroll provided they were awarded the 5-skill level in a AF A&P Program eligible aircraft maintenance AFSC prior to cross-training and have not been out of the aircraft maintenance AFSC more than 2 years. Program Enrollment: Technicians may enroll once they have been awarded the 5-skill level. Enroll at CCAF s secured website using the A&P Enrollment Form (https://www.my.af.mil/gcssaf/usaf/ep/contentview.do?contenttype=editorial&contentid=c88b4f00b41d2 F51E01420946721B0912&programId=t88B4F00B41D2F51E01420943DB3F0911&ch annelpageid=s6925ec13447c0fb5e044080020e329a9). Due to security reasons,

you must access from a.mil domain or via CAC access. Once complete, email the form to ccaf.faa@us.af.mil Once enrolled, a CCAF program manager will evaluate all program-applicable formal Air Force and civilian coursework reflected on the technician s CCAF academic record. The CCAF program manager will develop the technician s QTP and credit the applicable areas based on the evaluation. The CCAF program manager will e-mail the program QTP to the technician to begin the program. The QTP includes the CG-G-EAE-2 Form, FAA Certification Performance of Job Tasks; CG-G-EAE-3 Form, Joint Military Services Airframe and Powerplant Program; and instructions for completing program requirements. Air University Online A&P Specialized Courses: Upon receipt of the QTP, complete the three Air University Online A&P Specialized Courses. The A&P Specialized Courses are webbased and replaced the paper-based versions. The A&P Specialized Courses are: 02AF1 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- General V3 02AF2 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- Airframe V3 02AF3 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- Powerplant V3 Air University Online A&P Specialized Course Enrollment: To access the A&P Specialized Courses, you must first obtain a username and password for Air University Online at https://au.csd.disa.mil/. After obtaining a username and password, you may begin the A&P Specialized Courses. To access a course: a. Enter username and password. b. Click the menu item labeled "Course List". c. Click the "plus sign" next to "Specialized Courses" from the course list provided. d. Click the desired A&P Specialized Course to open your enrollment in the course. The A&P Specialized Courses should be completed sequentially, beginning with 02AF1 Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic General. Each A&P Specialized Course must be completed with a minimum passing score of 70%. Each A&P Specialized Course consists of a series of Units and Unit Review Exercises (URE). The course material can be viewed, printed, or saved to a personal computer. We recommend you print a copy to make notes and answer the Self-Test Questions. The UREs are progress exams and test your knowledge of the course material. A trainer/certifier shall proctor the URE exams. A course completion certificate may be printed upon completion of all URE's with a passing score of 70%. The course completion certificate is located at "My Transcript". Note: Technicians, who have completed civilian coursework, acceptable to CCAF, are not required to complete the A&P Specialized Courses. Example: completing the Embry-Riddle

Aeronautical University s six Type 65 courses satisfies the A&P Specialized Course requirement. If civilian courses are not reflected on the technician s CCAF academic record, the technician must provide a copy of the transcript reflecting course completion. Note: Technicians who possess a single FAA mechanic certificate rating (Airframe or Powerplant), and are participating in this program to pursue an additional rating, are not required to complete 02AF1 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- General and the A&P Specialized Course applicable to the rating previously awarded. Example: if you possess the FAA Powerplant certification, you are not required to complete 02AF1 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- General and 02AF3 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- Powerplant. The only A&P Specialized Course required to complete is 02AF2 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- Airframe. OJT: Complete the required OJT items specified in the QTP. All OJT items are mandatory and instructions for task sign-off are provided in the QTP instructions. Program Graduation: Technicians must complete all QTP requirements, 4-years TIS and 30 months of practical aircraft maintenance experience for CCAF to issue the CG-G-EAE-4 Form, Certificate of Eligibility. After completing all QTP requirements, the technician s unit maintenance officer must sign the verification statements within the QTP, verifying completion of training/experience requirements. The technician mails a copy of the completed CG-G-EAE-2 Form, CG-G-EAE-3 Form, and SC course completion certificates to: Community College of the Air Force Credentialing Programs CCAF/DEAL 100 South Turner Blvd Maxwell-Gunter AFB AL 36114-3011 The CCAF program manager will verify the technician s program completion and FAA eligibility. If all requirements are met, the Program Director will issue a CG-G-EAE-4 Form, Certificate of Eligibility and a FAA Form 8610-2, Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application. FAA Authorization: Upon receipt of documents from CCAF, schedule an appointment with the local FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI). The technician must present the CG-G-EAE-4 Form, CG-G-EAE-2 Form, military ID and FAA Form 8610-2. The ASI will review the documents and sign the FAA Form 8610-2, granting authorization to take the FAA A&P exams. Note: The FAA Form 8610-2 does not expire. Once the FAA Form 8610-2 is signed, granting authorization to take the FAA A&P exams, it is valid indefinitely. Store the signed FAA Form

8610-2 in a secure place and do not discard. FAA A&P Certification Exams: FAA A&P certification consists of a dual examination process that validates the technicians aircraft maintenance knowledge and skills. Three computerbased Knowledge exams test the technician s knowledge. The Oral and Practical (O&P) exams test the technicians skills. Click here for FAA-Approved Military Testing Centers. Knowledge Exams: When ready to take the first FAA exam (General), determine if the base education center is an FAA Testing Center. If the base education center is an approved FAA Testing Center, schedule a test date. After passing the General exam and ready to take subsequent exams (Airframe or Powerplant), contact the base education center to schedule a test date. The Knowledge exams are administered at no cost to eligible members. If the base education center is not an approved FAA Testing Center, access the Airmen Knowledge Testing Center List http://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/airmen/media/faacenters.pdf to locate the nearest FAA Testing Center. The technician is responsible for the exam fees at these locations. When reporting for testing, the technician must provide the testing administrator the signed FAA Form 8610-2 and military ID. A 70% is needed to pass each Knowledge exam. Note: Practice Exams are available at Air University Online to help you prepare for the actual FAA A&P certification Knowledge exams. To access the Practice Exercises you must have graduated from the Air Force A&P Certification Program and issued the CG-G-EAE-4 Form, Certificate of Eligibility. The Practice Exams are: 02AF1 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- General Practice Exercise (FAA) 02AF2 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- Airframe Practice Exercise (FAA) 02AF3 -- Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic -- Powerplant Practice Exercise (FAA) To request access, contact CCAF/DEAL at DSN 749-5020 / (334) 649-5020 or e-mail ccaf.faa@us.af.mil. Oral and Practical (O&P) Exams: After passing the three Knowledge exams, contact a FAA Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME) to schedule the O&P exams. a. An FAA DME listing is available at http://av-info.faa.gov/designeesearch.asp and provides contact information for all authorized DMEs located within each state. b. Present the signed FAA Form 8610-2 and all FAA A&P Knowledge exam score sheets, reflecting a passing grade for each section, to the DME. c. Upon successful completion of the O&P exams, the DME will issue a temporary certificate. The FAA will issue a permanent certificate within 120 days. The technician is responsible for the O&P exam fees.

Note: All FAA A&P exams must be completed within 24 months from the date the first Knowledge exam is administered. Technicians who do not complete the certification process within 24 months after the first Knowledge exam is administered must retake the expired Knowledge exam(s). Montgomery GI Bill: Technicians participating in the Montgomery GI Bill may be reimbursed for costs of the A&P Knowledge and O&P exams. Visit http://gibill.va.gov/benefits/index.html for more information. CCAF Collegiate Credit: Upon receipt of the permanent certificate, visit the base education center to submit the appropriate documentation to CCAF to add the FAA A&P certification to your CCAF academic record. Benefits of the Air Force A&P Certification Program: Supports professional development; develops a more diverse and qualified aircraft maintenance technician. CCAF awards 30 semester hours of collegiate credit. Supports recruiting and retention initiatives. Employment opportunities during transition to civilian life. For more information, contact the CCAF Credentialing Programs Flight at DSN 749-5020 / (334) 649-5020 or e-mail ccaf.faa@us.af.mil. Information current as of October 2013
