Understanding Decimals Lesson 1 VOCABULARY TARGET decimal number I can read and write decimal numbers. A decimal number is a base-ten number written with a decimal point. A decimal number has two parts: a whole number on the left of the decimal point and a part of a whole to the right of the decimal point. 1.75 quarts 0.3 pounds 14.1 centimeters Each of the measurements above are decimal numbers. The position of each digit in the decimal number determines how large the decimal number is. hundreds tens ones tenths hundredths 1 7 5 B2 Lesson 1 Understanding Decimals 1

The pitcher of juice contains 1 whole quart, 7 tenths of a quart and 5 hundredths of a quart. You can use models to show this decimal number measurement: 1 whole + + + 7 tenths + 5 hundredths The apple weighs 0.3 pounds. Shade in the model to show this amount. + 0 whole + 3 tenths To write and read decimals in word form, separate the whole number from the part of a whole using the word and. Fraction and Decimal Models Lesson 3 VOCABULARY TARGET equivalent numbers I can use models to connect equivalent fractions and decimals. In the last lesson you learned how to write fractions for decimal numbers. Each fraction had a denominator of 10 or 100 representing tenths or hundredths. Fill in the fraction that is equal to the decimal given in each oval. 0.6 = 0.82 = 3.15 = 4.9 = Every fraction has an equivalent decimal number. Equivalent numbers are two numbers that have equal values. Each pair of numbers in the ovals shown above are equivalent numbers. Jake has _ 1 of a candy bar. He wants to know what decimal number represents the 2 amount of candy bar he has. He uses a model. 1 out of 2 = 1 _ 2 12 Fraction And Decimal Models B2 Lesson 3

In order to write _ 1 as a decimal number, it is best to split his model into ten equalsized pieces. This is because parts of wholes in decimal numbers are written as 2 tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc. 1_ 2 5 10 1_ 2 5 = 5 5 10 The fraction 5 can be written as 0.5. Jake has 0.5 of a candy bar. 10 1_ 2 = 5 10 = 0.5 Nelly has _ 3 5 of her fence painted. How does she write _ 3 5 as a decimal number? In order to write _ 3 as a decimal number, she can separate her 5 model into tenths. To get 10 equal-sized parts of fence she will need to split each of the five boards in half to create 10 total parts. She has painted 10 multiplication. of the fence. Check your answer with 2 3_ 5 = 10 2 The denominator of the new fraction is tenth so it can be written as a decimal number. 6 10 = B2 Lesson 3 Fraction And Decimal Models 13

Some fractions cannot be written with a denominator of 10. In order to write the fraction as a decimal number, you may need a denominator of 100, 1000 or even 10,000. Look at _ 1 as an example. 4 = 1 4 25 = 25 25 100 1 4 = What is _ 3 as a decimal number? 4 = 3_ 4 = 100 = decimal number new fraction 14 Fraction And Decimal Models B2 Lesson 3

Practice Name: Practice Use the models to find the decimal number for each fraction. 1. Shade 2 5 of the model. Shade enough hundredths in the model to be equal to 2 5. What fraction of the second model is shaded? Which decimal number is equivalent to 2 5? 2. Shade in 1 2 of the model. Shade in enough tenths in the model to be equal to 1 2. What fraction of the second model is shaded? Which decimal number is equivalent to 1 2? B2 Lesson 3 Fraction And Decimal Models 15

3. Shade in 2 4 of the model. Shade in enough hundredths in the model to be equal to 2 4. What fraction of the second model is shaded? Which decimal number is equivalent to 2 4? 4. The second model in each problem has 10 or 100 total sections. Why is this important if you want to write a decimal number? 16 Fraction And Decimal Models B2 Lesson 3

Decimals and Common Fractions Lesson 4 VOCABULARY TARGET common fraction I can write decimal numbers that are equal to common fractions. Hannah ate _ 3 4 of her strawberries. Micah has _ 1 of a bag of pretzels. 2 Marco ran 2 _ 3 1 of a mile. Jill ate of the pie. 10 0 1 mile Each fraction above is a common fraction. Common fractions are fractions that appear often in real-world situations. Some of the most common fractions have denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10. In this lesson, you will discover the decimal values for common fractions. 18 Decimals And Common Fractions B2 Lesson 4

This means that the digits after the decimal point never stop. Look at the model below. 1_ is a little more than 3 (or 0.3) but not 4 3 10 10 (0.4). The decimal number equivalent of _ 1 3 = 0.3333. The... means the threes go on forever. Similar to _ 1 3, the fraction _ 2 = 0.666... The approximations shown 3 in the boxes are used most often for _ 1 3 and _ 2 3. 1_ 3 0.33 2_ 3 0.67 B2 Lesson 4 Decimals And Common Fractions 19

Estimating with Fractions and Decimals TARGET Lesson 7 I can solve problems by estimating fraction and decimal amounts. It is important to be able to estimate with fractions and decimals. Estimating helps you do math in your head quickly. One way to estimate is to round to the nearest benchmark. Benchmarks are numbers that are easy to work with. Estimating with Fractions Fractions less than 1 have a numerator smaller than the denominator. Fractions less than 1 can be estimated by rounding them to the benchmarks 0, _ 1 and 1. 2 2 10 0 5 12 _ 1 2 19 20 1 2 10 5 12 19 20 0 1_ 1 2 36 Estimating With Fractions And Decimals B2 Lesson 7
