Some education licenses require the completion of additional MTEL tests. Page 4 Associate s Degree Program South Coast Educational Collaborative has partnered with Bristol Community College to implement an Associate s Degree program designed for Instructional Paraprofessionals. The program of studies is comprised of courses that meet general degree requirements as well as electives chosen to best prepare the candidates for their current work assignments as paraprofessionals. Most courses transfer to four-year state colleges and anniversaries. Students attend evening classes at South Coast s Graduate Learning Center in Swansea during fall, spring, and summer semesters. The courses are designed to meet No Child Left Behind requirements. Ongoing student advising is an integral component of the program. The Cohort Model co hort [ko-hàwrt] (plural cohorts) noun A united group of people; a supporter, accomplice, or associate of a leader; a group of people sharing a common factor. All our continuing education programs utilize a cohort model - a small group of students learning together for the duration of the program, thereby forming a cohesive, supportive community of learners with common goals. Research has shown that the cohort model increases each student s chance of high achievement and success.

Page 5 Students with a variety of educational backgrounds (Associate s degree, Bachelor s degree, or credits along the way) interested in earning a license toward a career in teaching should consider this option. Teaching Career Pathway for Paraprofessionals South Coast Educational Collaborative in partnership with Northeastern University offers a Bachelor of Arts degree for Instructional Paraprofessionals, or others, interested in becoming licensed educators. Students could complete their Associate s degree at B.C.C. Credits earned would transfer into a specially designed Northeastern University program that would allow students to finish their coursework in three years, obtain a degree in Liberal Studies with a minor in Education, and be prepared for educator licensure. Students enrolled in this program named Bridge to Teaching would be able to continue to work in their school position. Two courses are offered each of three semesters per year at the Collaborative s Graduate Learning Center in Swansea. The plan offers a program with the convenience of an off-campus location, discounted tuition rate, cohort model, possibility for grant funding of nearly all expenses, and student advising by Northeastern University. Program Description The Bridge to Teaching program is designed for paraprofessionals, teaching assistants and teacher aides who work in public education and who wish to complete their Bachelor s Degree and step onto the Bridge leading to licensure in Elementary Education. Eligibility/Requirements: You must be an instructional paraprofessional with at least one year of experience in public school - currently working in a classroom or clinical setting. You must have earned an associate degree or its equivalent worth at least 60 semester hour credits (80 quarter hour credit equivalent)

Page 7 Elementary Professional Licensure (PreK-2, or 1-6) South Coast Educational Collaborative, together with Framingham State College, offers a district-based Professional Licensure Program consisting of ninety contact hours of content-based seminars and fifty hours of mentored experience. Over the span of one school year, the program provides graduate-level education in reading and mathematics suitable for the elementary-level educator. The two courses carry college credit at Framingham State College. Candidates must possess Initial licensure in Elementary Education, grades 1-6 or Early Childhood, Students with and without Disabilities, PreK-2; have one or more years experience teaching under the Initial license; and be otherwise eligible for the Professional license. The cost of the Program covers two graduate level courses, the mentoring component, and student advisement. This program offers the convenience of an off-campus location, discounted tuition rate, cohort model, evening and summer classes, and student advising. By focusing on reading and mathematics instruction for one school year, the Professional Licensure Program strengthens the elementary educator s preparation in the most essential areas of elementary teacher preparation. By directly incorporating mentoring into the fabric of the content-based seminars, and by having the instructor of the content portion be the mentor, elementary educators become better prepared to address the needs of their students.
