Brief History C.W. Klemm was born in Haynade, Germany in 1845. He immigrated to the United States in 1868 settling originally in Springfield, Illinois with his cousin and business owner C.A. Gehrman. Mr. Klemm came to Bloomington, Illinois, in 1873 and rented a store east of the intersection of Center and Jefferson Streets. He later bought a store from A. Fitzwilliam; the store, C.W. Klemms, remained open until 1973. After the 1900 fire the store building was rebuilt into a modern department store located on North Center St. between Jefferson and Monroe. C.W. Klemm was married first to Augustana Seibel in 1874. She died in 1886 leaving children Mrs. Helen Howard, Mrs. Clara Agle, and Carl H. Klemm. His second wife Emilia Bender, of Peoria, Illinois, bore him a son, Julius P. Klemm, and passed away May 7, 1921. C.W. Klemm died February 22, 1930 in Bloomington, Illinois. Scope Note The C. W.
