MESSAGE FROM THE EMERGES DIRECTOR The Energy Sector is nowadays at the center of the worldwide economic and social stage. It has become increasingly evident that all the main challenges we are facing, from global warming to exhaustion of fossil fuels, from economic development to sustainability, are tightly linked to the elements composing the System of Energy. Acquiring a higher-level executive education in this sector means investing in a career able to generate high value in a growing field; a career centered around knowledge that matters, and that will matter everyday more. Acquiring such competencies is however a challenge. The Executive Master in Energy Resources and Global Environmental Strategies (EMERGES) has been designed with the precise intent to provide executives aiming to navigate the energy landscape with the knowledge needed to master the key elements of the sector. With this goal in mind, LUISS Business School developed an innovative approach to education in this field, starting from a simple principle: energy production and energy consumption are the two sides of the same coin. Energy management techniques, energy efficiency, emissions trading, and investments in innovation to reduce energy consumption, are just the demand side of a system mirrored, on the supply side, by issues such as resource management, diversification and risk, development of distribution grids, and investments in innovation to reduce the costs of producing and distributing energy. In the Energy Sector demand and supply are tightly linked. To develop a career in energy-intensive industries, such as chemicals, glass, or steel, energy managers need to open a window on the supply side and get acquainted with the main processes leading the change on the other side. At the same time, those who want to advance their career in firms in the oil, coal, gas, electricity, or renewable-energy sectors need to learn practices to manage a demand that becomes increasingly intelligent and need to learn how energy managers think. The EMERGES program takes this challenge and develops a course structure that creates synergies between the two perspectives, intertwining the practices of energy managers with the strategies of energy producing companies. For this reason, EMERGES will enhance your capabilities to lead your organization, take key decisions, face challenges in the competitive global arena of ever-evolving energy markets. Franco Fontana Director LUISS Business School EMERGES 2

02. EMERGES PROGRAM The Energy Sector is a worldwide system that develops along a series of complex trade-offs: renewable vs. non-renewable fuels, carbon emissions vs. energy production costs, social acceptance vs. gradual diversification of resources, concentrated vs. dispersed markets, complex value chains mastered by large companies vs. dispersed and heterogeneous networks spanning many smaller firms, and many others. The complexity of the sector requires a well-grounded understanding of its elements, both on the theoretical as well as on the practical side. It requires deep knowledge of the sector s global dynamics: from the complex interconnection between demand and supply at the global level, to the finer-grain implications for the development of firms engaged in the production, distribution and consumption of energy. The EMERGES program develops an educational journey that tackles all these challenges, and provides the participants with the knowledge needed to improve their career prospects either as managers in the energy supply sector or as energy manager in energy-intensive industries. KEY ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM A comprehensive framework to navigate the ever-changing nature of the energy sector An understanding of the key elements that make energy management a source of competitive advantage The mastery of the foundations of strategic decisions in the evolving energy industry A toolbox for managing environmental responsibility Two active learning sessions based on real-life cases and concrete global issues, to be developed together with firm representatives A full-week network-based course in Tuscany included in the price EMERGES 4

03. EMERGES CURRICULUM The program is structured in 4 main COMPETENCES SETS: ENERGY: GETTING THE BUILDING BLOCKS RIGHT ECONOMIC ISSUES IN ENERGY: FROM INPUTS TO CONSUMPTION EXPLORING THE BLACK-BOX: THE FIRM THE CHALLENGES: FROM SUPPLY TO DEMAND ENERGY: GETTING THE BUILDING BLOCKS RIGHT The first module introduces participants to the general issues of the energy market and lays down the foundations of the further sessions. This introduction outlays the path-dependent nature of the past that led to the present scenario, provides a broad overview of the forces acting today, and the sets of options available for the future. The module is structured as follows: Global ecosystem and the dynamics of its maintenance Introducing the energy sector The economics of energy ECONOMIC ISSUES IN ENERGY: FROM INPUTS TO CONSUMPTION The second module aims to equip the participants with an unambiguous comprehension of the energy markets by laying down the emphasis on the macroeconomic perspective of the value chain from input acquisition to consumption. In particular, it focuses on the input side, on the actors involved on the output side, along with the negotiations between them, on the network dynamics of the sector, and on the role of the energy manager in increasing the efficiency of energy-intensive firms. The module is structured as follows: Focus on the input side: macroeconomic perspective Focus on the output side: leading the energy markets Focus on the system: network dynamics of the energy sector Focus on the consumption side: energy management 5
