DIÓSDI SZENT GELLÉRT VEGYESKAR St Gellert Mixed Choir of Diosd was founded in 1993 and at the present has 32 members, who are amateur singers brought together by the love of music. OUR CONDUCTOR is Katalin Szabó, who obtained her degree as a conductor and secondary school music teacher at Ferenc Liszt Music Academy. She has been working with our choir since 2002. OUR REPERTOIRE includes well-known pieces of music of the choir literature, secular and sacred music by foreign and Hungarian composers and also Hungarian folk arrangements. LOCAL COMMUNITY Fostering the local cultural traditions plays an important part in the life of the choir. We regularly take part in the cultural events of the local community of our town and traditionally give concerts at Easter, Whitsun, Christmas and in June, at the end of the choral season. REGIONAL CONNECTIONS We take part in regional cultural choral festivals and also participate and organise concerts with choirs from the region, the neighbouring settlements and the capital city of Budapest. INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS Our German Partner Choir We have had a long-established relationship with Gesangverein Alsbach, the choir of our partner town in Alsbach-Hähnlein, Germany. We regularly have mutual exchange visits and concerts in Alsbach-Hählein and Diósd, respectively. International festivals In 2004 we took part in the international Choir Festival of Riva del Garda where we gained a silver diploma in the sacred music category and a gold diploma in the secular category as a mixed choir. In 2007 we attended the International Advent and Christmas Festival and Competition of Prague where we got a silver qualification. GRUNDTVIG PARTNERSHIPS - LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAM 2011-2013 In 2011 a two-year Grundtvig Partnership Project entitled 'SING-SONG Dialog between Past and Future' started with the participation of five choirs from four countries, including Diósdi Szent Gellért Vegyeskar. The program includes musical and vocal education of the learners, exchange of the experiences between the partners of the project and is realised in workshops closing with a concert in each of the participating countries throughout the two years. The partners will learn and perform compositons from each participating country. Throughout the programme the adult learners have the opportunity to realise the goals of the learning partnership that is to learn and find out about other cultures including music culture and foreign languages.
Some of the Relics of the Saint Gellert legend in Diósd and Budapest Saint Gellért Bishop Diósdi Szent Gellért Vegyeskar is named for Saint Gellért Bishop, who suffered martyrdom for his Christian faith in 1046. As a bishop of Italian origin, he played a major role in converting Hungary to Christianity. The legend says that just before his martyrdom he stayed in Diósd where he attended a mass. Before the mass he had a vision of his martyrdom which, unfortunately happened the next day. According to the legend he was rolled down in a barrel from a hill, which is to be found in Budapest and is named Gellért Hill after him. Saint Gellért is one of the patron saints of Hungary now and Diósd, the legendary place of his last mass has become a place of pilgrimage. In our settlement Diósd, and also in other places all over the country you can find a lot of relics of Saint Gellert Bishop. The history of Saint Gellert in the Hungarian Anjou-legendarium/codex.
