The inaugural session was attended by forty three officers engaged in NGCM projects in GSI, WR that included 13 trainee participants - eight from SU: Rajasthan, Jaipur; one from SU: Gujarat, Gandhinagar and four from CGM and GMRDS Gujarat. Dr. G. Malhotra, Director, Regional Training Institute, welcomed Sh. K. Parida Dy. D.G., and HOD, GSI, WR, Sh. P. Srivastava, Dy. D.G., SU: Rajasthan, Sh. R. G Verma, Dy. D.G. and RHM I, WR, Sh. Ashok Mathur, Dy. D.G. (Chemical), Sh. P. N. Sharma, Director, Geochemical Division, WR, Directors of Project: GCM - I, II, III and IV, SU: Rajasthan, Directors of Project: GCM - I, II, SU: Gujarat, Guest Faculty including Sh. D. J. Dasgupta, Director (Retd.) GSI, the trainee participants and all the officers of Project: GCM - I, II, III and IV, SU: Rajasthan and all the officers of Project: GCM - I, II, SU: Gujarat, for their participation in the inaugural session. He briefed the participants about the objective of the Workshop on Geochemical Mapping data handling and its interpretation and elaborated on the course content and the schedule. Sh. K. Parida Dy. D.G., and HOD, WR extended his warm welcome to entire gathering. In his inaugural address, Sh. K. Parida gave a brief account of the NGCM (National Geochemical Mapping) activities in the state of Rajasthan. He stated that NGCM is the thrust area of Mission-I activities during the current plan. He advised all the participants for active participation in the workshop. Sh. R. G Verma, Dy. DG, RHM-I, WR, while addressing the gathering, requested all the participants to fully utilize this opportunity to clear all the doubts/queries regarding NGCM procedures and data handling and its interpretation. Sh. P. Srivastava, Dy. D.G., SU: Rajasthan emphasized the national character of the NGCM programme and advised all to follow the procedure laid out in the SOP. Sh. Ashok Mathur, Dy. DG (Chemical), also addressed the house and expressed his views on the role of Chemical Division in GCM activities. He appealed to all the officers to increase interaction with the chemical division to get an idea about the intricacies of chemical analysis of NGCM samples. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Sh. Sanjay Singh, Sr. Geologist.

The Keynote address entitled Theme, Principle and Status of the NGCM programme of GSI was delivered by Sh. D. J. Dasgupta, Director (Retd.). He deliberated in detail on the basic concepts in map elements, map scale and projections, sampling media scope and objective of the NGCM programme and threw light on its strengths and weaknesses. During the post lunch session Sh. R. S. Garkhal, Director, FTC, Zawar, deliberated in detail on the sample number scheme, sample numbering pattern, implement/equipments, sample collection, sample processing, field notes, radiometric surveys etc. to be followed in the NGCM programme. Both of these presentations were saw lively discussions on sampling scheme to be adopted. On 3 rd, Sh. Auditeya Bhattachrya, Director, deliberated in details about the NGCM data handling. This session was again attended by nearly forty three officers engaged in NGCM activities in GSI, WR. Sh. Bhattacharya studied in detail the Field Data Sheets submitted by the officers carrying out NGCM in Rajasthan and Gujarat. He was pleased to announce that the data sheets have been filled in the correct manner without any errors and congratulated the officers and their supervisors for this achievement. During the post lunch session the officers of WR gave presentations on various subjects related to geochemical mapping. Sh. P. N. Sharma, Director, Geochemical Division deliberated on the Techniques of Interpretation of NGCM data and suggested modifications. This was followed by five deliberations by different officers. On 5 th Sh. Sanjay Singh, Sr. Geologist introduced the trainees to modern concepts in statistics and its limitations, Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), geographically linked compositional data and correlation. During the post lunch session the six different officers of WR gave presentations on various subjects related to geochemical mapping. On 6 th, Sh. Pawan Kumar, Geologist gave demonstration on the use of EXCEL and SURFER software and the trainees were given hands on practice on these softwares for univariant statistics and for producing contour maps respectively. Sh. Sanjay Singh, Sr. Geologist along with Sh. Pawan Kumar supervised the hand on practice sessions on 6 th afternoon and 7 th forenoon. In the afternoon of 7 th August 2013, Dr. N. R. Ramesh, Dy. D.G., GSITI and Head M-V, was the Chief Guest and chaired the valedictory session. Sh. P. Srivastava, Dy. D.G., SU: Rajasthan; Sh. R. G Verma, Dy. D.G. and RHM I, WR; Sh. Ashok Mathur, Dy. D.G., (Chemical) and Sh. P. N. Sharma, Director, Geochemical Division, WR also graced the Valedictory Function during which Group Discussion was held on the course content, time allotted and technical presentations by Guest Faculty. Duly filled in Feedback forms were also submitted by the participants. The participants were invited to individually express their overall opinion and experience during the Workshop. The programme as a whole including the selection of Guest Faculty, selection of topics, technical guidance during the course, coordination and the course organization was rated very good to excellent.

Dr. N. R. Ramesh, in his concluding remarks gave the background information of NGCM programme in GSI and its objectives and activities as well as its targets and achievements. He informed the gathering that most of the mineral deposits with surface occurrences have been already discovered and emphasized on the need to concentrate on locating deep seated mineral deposits. He stressed that the SOP is a dynamic document which has to be made more robust and useable. He wished that in future training courses on NGCM may include lectures on geochemistry. He thanked the HOD, WR for conducting regular programs on NGCM. He expressed his happiness and satisfaction on the feedback given by the trainee officers and congratulated Dr. G. Malhotra for organizing several imaginative courses in different subject areas. Dr. N. R. Ramesh, Dy. D.G., GSITI and Head M-V presented the course certificate to officers.
