Goa University, Taleigao Plateau, Goa 403 206, India Syllabus for Bachelor of Performing Arts in Hindustani Classical Music Implemented from the academic year 2003-04 A brief description of the course. INTRODUCTION: Goa College of Music, a Govt. College affiliated to Goa University was founded on 1.8.1987. The College is conducting two years Foundation Course and four years degree course leading to Bachelor of Performing Arts in Hindustani Classical Music. The College is also conducting Post Graduate Degree Course Master of Performing Arts in Vocal Music. The basic aim of the courses is to impart a full time professional training in Hindustani Classical Vocal Music and Instrumental Music such as Harmonium, Sitar and Tabla/Pakhawaj etc.. It is aimed to provide a specialized training to the music students in all important aspects of Hindustani Music with a special emphasis on developing his/her performing ability to the professional standard. The College is also conducting part time Diploma Courses in Vocal, Harmonium, Sitar and Tabla for the general students and music lovers. THE NATURE OF EDUCATION: A student is given manifold training covering the following areas: 1. Actual training in singing ragas, with an accent on proper application of voice, tunefulness and developing mastery of rhythm. In the case of instrumental music, proper technique in playing the instrument is taught and training is given in various Ragas and Talas. 2. Teaching theoretical aspects of Ragas and comparative study of Ragas of similar structure. 1

3. Teaching other theoretical aspects like Aesthetics., Musicology with some other subjects like voice culture, sound recording having practical bearing on performance. 4. Visiting Professors specialized in the fields like Musicology and reputed performing artists are invited to give lecture/demonstrations/performance and conducting workshops in the respective fields. 5. A student will be exposed to various live concerts of educational value as also recorded concerts and performances recorded in commercial L.Ps, C.D. and Cassettes. 6. For improving performing ability by the students, they will be encouraged to perform regularly in monthly music programmes of College and also other programme on various occasions in the other educational/cultural institutions. 7. The students will be taken to the reputed Institutions/Colleges/Universities outside the State to participate in Music Programmes, under Inter University/ College Music Exchange Scheme. FACILITIES PROVIDED: The College of Music is provided with sufficient number of classrooms, library, Audio/Video library, listening hall, concert hall and other essential facilities and has also the potential to provide other facilities as will be necessitated in future. DURATION OF THE COURSE: The duration of the course will be for all together four years after the H.S.S.C. Examination. SEATS AVAILABLE IN EACH DISCIPLINE: The total number of seats for admission to the first year of B.P.A. Degree Course is maximum 12 students in the subject of Vocal and 8 students in each subject of Sitar, Harmonium and Tabla. To start a class in a subject it will be required to have minimum 3 students in each subject. 2

ADMISSION AND ELIGIBILITY: 1. Students passing Foundation Course in Music of Goa University will be eligible for admission to First Year of Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree Course. 2. Students passing Second Year B. Music (Old Course) of Goa University will be eligible for admission to First Year of Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree Course. 3. Students who have passed H.S.S.C. Examination i.e. 10+2 with Music in + two will be admitted to First Year of Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree Course. 4. Students who have passed H.S.S.C.E. or above and who have also passed Sangeet Madhyama or Higher Examination or any other equivalent diploma of the recognized Music Institution or having minimum three years foundational training in Music from a qualified Guru/Teacher will be admitted to the First Year of B.P.A. Course. 5. In addition to above, to be eligible for admission to the B.P.A. Degree Course a candidate has to pass the entrance test conducted by the College with minimum 40% marks. 6. For all other details as regards to admissions and reservations etc. please refer the current prospectus. FEES AND REFUND: 1) Admission fee Rs.100/- 2) Caution Money (Refundable) Rs.200/- (for new students) 3) Tuition fees (per term) Rs.600/- 4) Library fees(yearly) Rs.100/- 5) Fees for other facilities (yearly) Rs.100/- 6) Identity card fees Rs. 20/- 7) University Registration Fee Rs.440/- (only for new students at the time of admission) 8) University Sports fee (yearly) Rs. 40/- Refund of caution money can be claimed within six months from the date of leaving the College by the students and the same will be refunded after deducting the outstanding dues if any against the student. No claims made thereafter will be entertained. 3

With the payment of these fees, a student has access to the library and the lending of books, periodicals etc. as per the rules of the library. These rules shall be strictly observed by the students who wish to avail, the facilities provided by the library. The student will also have an access to the records in library, wherein he/she can listen to the recorded music of the artist(s) of his/her choice. STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE AND TEACHING PROGRAMME: 1. Music being a performing art, its nature of training is mainly performance and practical oriented. As such the training in Music practicals will be imparted in batches. Each batch will consist of minimum 3 and maximum 6 students. As far as Vocal is concerned there will be separate batches for both male and female students even though their minimum number in a batch is less than the prescribed, as their pitch of voice is totally different from each other and as such they cannot be imparted practical training in the same pitch i.e. Swara at a time. The lectures on theory and languages will be conducted in group. 2. There shall be 5 papers in theory and 1 paper in Practical for First year B.P.A. and the title of the paper shall be decided by the Board of Studies from time to time. The number of lectures/periods per week shall be as under: I st Year B.P.A.: Paper English Hindi Indian Culture and Art Environmental Studies Music Theory (Applied & General) Music Practical No. of Lectures/Periods per week 3 periods each of 45 minutes duration 3 periods each of 45 minutes duration 2 periods each of 45 minutes duration 2 periods each of 45 minutes duration 1 period of 45 minutes duration 6 periods each of 45 minutes duration per batch of 6 students per subject. 4

II nd and III rd Year B.P.A.: There shall be 1 paper in music theory, 1 paper in Subsidiary (Theory and Practical) and 2 papers in Music Practicals for II nd & III rd Year B.P.A. and the title of the papers shall be as decided by the Board of Studies from time to time. The number of lectures/periods per week shall be as under: Paper Music Theory Subsidiary Practical and /Theory Music Practicals No. of Lectures/periods per week 1 period of 45 minutes duration 2 periods each of 45 minutes duration 10 periods each of 45 minutes duration per batch of 6 students per subject. IV th Year B.P.A. There shall be 1 paper in music theory, 1 paper in Special Assigned Project and 2 papers in music practicals for IV th Year B.P.A. and the title of the papers shall be as decided by the Board of Studies from time to time. The number of lectures/periods per week shall as under: Paper Music Theory Special Assigned Project Music Practicals No. of Lectures/periods per week 1 period of 45 minutes duration To be completed within the academic year. 10 periods each of 45 minutes duration per batch of maximum 6 students per subject. In addition, there will also be the regular sessions on listening of recorded music, group discussions, student s music programme and practice etc. for the students of all the classes as a part of teaching activity. The candidates are permitted to answer their theory papers either in English, Hindi, Konkani and Marathi. However, they shall answer the paper in on language only and also notify the choice of their language at the time of admission. However, the question paper shall be set in Hindi only. The language papers shall be in respective language only. 5

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION: The candidates will be examined in the following subjects and the duration of papers and marks allocation will be as under: Duration: 4 Years Total Marks: 2400 First Year of Bachelor of Performing Arts (B.P.A.) Fourth Year Bachelor of Performing Arts(B.P.A.) :- Paper No.1 Theory (Applied & General) 100 3 hrs. Paper No.2 Special Assigned Project 100 --- Paper No.3 Practical - I 250 --- a)viva voce 150 b)other forms 100 Paper No.4 Practical II 100 --- Stage Performance Internal(Continuous Assessment 50 PATTERN OF EXAMINATION : 1) Examination will be conducted annually :- The II nd, III rd and IV th Year Examinations of B.P.A. will be conducted by Goa University and I st Year B.P.A. examination will be Internal and conducted by the College on behalf of the University. The College will also conduct the Terminal Examination for the students of all the years. 2) Eligibility for Annual Examination: To be eligible to qualify for appearing at the annual examination a student will have to show attendance of atleast 75% of the total during the academic year and have appeared the terminal examination conducted by the College. 3) Standard of passing: a) To pass the examination of B.P.A., a candidate must obtain a minimum of 40% of the full marks in each paper of theory and practical examinations respectively. b) Grace marks will be awarded as per the University rules. 7

4) Award of Classes: - 1) Class will be awarded on the following basis to the successful candidate : A) Distinction -- 70% marks and above B) First Class -- 60% marks and above but below 70% C) Second Class -- 50% and above but below 60% D) Pass Class -- 40% and above but below 50% 5) Advancement to the next year and conditions for A.T.K.T. (Allowed to keep terms): Candidates who have passed in all the heads of passing in the theory and practical papers of the previous year will be eligible for promotion to the next year of study. However, a candidate who has failed in not more than two theory papers will be allowed to keep terms for the next year. The result of the next year examination will not be declared unless he/she has cleared the remaining theory papers of previous year examination. However the candidates failing in practical examination will not be eligible for proceeding for the next year. (a) A student failing in Final Year Bachelor of Performing Arts Examination will be eligible to appear in the next examination as an external candidate and complete the course within a period of next three years. (b) A student who obtains minimum passing marks prescribed in each theory paper will be exempted from reappearing for that paper only. 8
