AirLink MP597 Quick Start Guide for Verizon CoverTitle

Activating your MP 597 on the Verizon Network Product Overview Product Overview OMA-DM Hands Free Activation (HFA) Installing MP 597 Verifying connection Configuring through ACEmanager Activating Using AT Commands Specifications This Quick Start guide provides step-by-step directions for activating your MP 597 on Verizon s network. Product Overview Note: Do not connect the MP modem to a USB port on a computer before installing the software. The Sierra Wireless AirLink MP modem provides a wireless network connection for portable computers in vehicles or offices. If the MP modem is installed in a vehicle, it typically is mounted in the trunk and connected to a notebook computer in the passenger compartment. A radio frequency (RF) antenna mounted on the roof of the vehicle enables the MP modem to communicate through a wireless network to a host computer. A built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) module provides location and heading data that can also be remotely monitored. The MP modem has a rugged design that allows it to withstand the vibration, shock, humidity, and extremes of temperature experienced in the normal operation of police, emergency, utility, and field service vehicles. Rev 1.0 Mar.10 23

AirLink MP 597 Quick Start Guide You can use the network connection provided by the MP modem to access shared data, browse the Internet, and send and receive e-mail and text messages. The MP modem also allows for sensors, gauges, and alarms (such as panic buttons) to be installed in vehicles and remotely monitored from a central location. OMA-DM MP 597 is an embedded router solution that supports Network Initiated (NI) OMA- DM Device Configuration (DC) and PRL Updates (PRL) on the Sprint network. The MP 597 firmware registers notifications with the MC5727 radio module for OMA-DM NI alerts and session state and processes them appropriately. The alert response instructs the radio module to immediately process the NI OMA-DM command. When the OMA-DM session state is IDLE, MP 597 records the session type and session result code and then re-establishes the data connection. Hands Free Activation (HFA) MP 597 automatically detects the radio module installed during system startup. If the radio module is CDMA technology, MP 597 will check the current provisioning state and if necessary execute HFA. For devices that have previously been provisioned the HFA routine is bypassed. Automatic Activation One of the special features of your MP 597 for Verizon is the ability to activate itself automatically. When you first power on the MP 597, it will check to see if it has been activated with account data. If it finds that it has not yet been activated, the MP 597 will attempt to retrieve the account data from the Verizon network using Over-the-Air Service Provisioning (OTASP). Caution: You need to have an account with Verizon before you attempt automatic activation. If you have not ordered an account from Verizon for your MP 597, it will not succeed at activating. a. Attach the antenna to your MP 597. b. Plug the MP 597 into power. c. While the LED lights, Network and GPS, blink together, the MP 597 is attempting to download its account information. The download process may take about a minute or two. Caution: Do not move your MP 597 while it is being programmed. 24 2130795

d. When the lights illuminate, your MP 597 has successfully completed OTASP and is registered on the Verizon network. Installing MP 597 For installing the latest software version (.exe file), you can go to the Sierra Wireless website: http://www.sierrawireless.com/support. For the updater tool to execute, please install the USB drivers available on the website before executing the.exe file. Tip: Copy the USB Serial Driver.inf file to your desktop. Then power up the MP597W and connect USB. Install from specific location and point to this.inf file. For detailed instructions on installing the USB drivers, please refer to Universal Serial Bus Application Note. 1. Connect the MP 597 to your computer using an Ethernet cable or a serial cable USB cable. 2. Connect the power adapter and antennas to your MP 597. a. Figure 0-6: Verify USB Connection Confirming IP Address Check the IP Address in your Local Area Connection window. Figure 0-7 shows USB connection. 28 2130795

Figure 0-7: Confirm IP Address Configuring through ACEmanager AceManager is a free utility. Follow the steps below to connect to AceManager for configuring the modem. Ensure MP connectivity to access AceManager. Go to: http://192.168.13.31:9191 (ethernet connection) the first time you connect to AceManager. Activating Using AT Commands An alternate method to configure and activate your MP 597 is by using AT commands sent directly to the modem with a terminal application. (Refer to the troubleshooting section). Caution: It is not possible to activate the MP 597 using either ACEmanager or ACEnet. Using Direct Commands to the Internal Hardware Use only if the ALEOS method is unsuccessful. Rev 1.0 Mar.10 29

AirLink MP 597 Quick Start Guide Activating the Modem 1. Put modem into passthru mode to by-pass ALEOS. This will allow direct communication with the wireless module for programming. Entering passthru will take 10-15 seconds and will return an OK when it is complete. AT\APASSTHRU 2. Verify you are in Passthru mode. AT!STATUS 3. Unlock the module. AT~NAMLCK=MSL Tip: The MSL is a six digit number that is unique to each modem. 4. Set the MDN and MSID. AT~NAMVAL=0,MDN,MSID,0,65535 5. Verify the settings are what you intended to enter. AT~NAMVAL?0 Note: If your carrier supports IOTA, start the IOTA session. Not all carriers support IOTA. Please check with your carrier before you use this command. 6. Start the IOTA session. AT!IOTASTART Status will be output until IOTA completes with IOTA Successful or 1012 ERROR. 7. Reset the module. AT!RESET 8. Press the reset button on the front of the modem. When the modem restarts, it should register on the network. PassThru mode through AT Command Issuing the AT\APASSTHRU from a terminal emulation enters the PassThru mode. The modem responds with OK, at which point a direct connection to the internal hardware is established. You can also configure the modem to enter PassThru mode on start up using MD. 30 2130795

Figure 0-8: PassThru mode Tip: PassThru can only be exited by resetting or power-cycling the modem. This mode cannot be entered via a remote Telnet session. You can configure a string of AT commands to be sent to the MP 597 when it enters PassThru and other PassThru settings. PassThru Mode allows only specific AT commands. Some ALEOS commands will be unavailable when the MP 597 is in PassThru mode. The commands usable also depend heavily on the modem model number (found on the label on the top of the MP 597). Note: Some internal hardware requires upwards of 20 seconds before AT commands can be entered, so be patient if there seems to be no response to AT commands. Rev 1.0 Mar.10 31
