Make a slot for the handle To put a slot into the top piece for a handle opening Mark an 9 line through the middle of the interfacing. 9 Fuse the interfacing to the piece of slot fabric. Fabric Wrong Side Interfacing MEASURE CAREFULLY Place the SLOT fabric RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER on top of the TOP fabric piece. If you have cut the pieces correctly you should have 5.75 on each side and 5.25 top and bottom. (Note: these numbers will be different for other size cage covers slot should be centered) 5.25 5.75 5.75 Top Fabric Right Side Slot Fabric Wrong Side Interfacing (ironed on) 5.25 Sew 1/8 around the 8 line you have drawn for the slot, rounding the ends. Interfacing ( ) 1/8 Sewing line
CAREFULLY cut the slot line close to, BUT NOT CUTTING through the stitching on each end. Now push the fabric through to the wrong side of the top, flattening it with your fingers. Iron from BOTH sides, being careful to avoid any bunching on the right side of the top piece. Top stitch around the top again rounding the ends, and being careful not to pull the fabric too tightly. On the wrong side fold under the edges of the slot fabric and sew down along the edge. 1. MEASURE and iron a 1 seam line around the entire top piece. Open the seam lines. This will help in placing the side and end pieces for sewing. 2. MEASURE and Iron 1 to wrong side of fabric on three of the sides of the 2 end and 2 side panels leaving the top of each piece free for seaming to the top piece. (This would leave a seam edge on the 23.5 edge of the side pieces and the 15 side of the end pieces) 3. Fold those 1 seams in half on those four pieces, and sew down for hems. TABS 1. Put two tab pieces, right sides together, and sew a 1/2 seam around the sides, leaving one short side open about 1 for turning. 2. Trim seams. Turn tabs inside out. Iron and do a 1/8 top stitch around edge. Repeat for all 8 tabs 3. Sew a ¾ x 3 (or 1 x 3 ) piece of Velcro to the closed end of the tabs. Velcro strip 4. On the WRONG SIDE of the END PIECE fabrics, Measure 4 DOWN from the top and 3 UP from the bottom and sew the tabs to the side hems of the front and back end pieces (make a square of the seam, double the sewing or use a bartack stitch). 5. Raw seam edge 4 hem edge 2 wide tab Velcro strip 4 end piece Wrong side Sewing line 3 Laying the end pieces beside the side pieces (matching hem lines and top raw edge lines) determine the location for the second half of the hook and loop Velcro tape. On the RIGHT side of the side pieces pin the ¾ x 3 (or 1 x 3 ) piece of hook and loop into place and sew. (Note: Placement inches will change for different size covers).
Embroider, or use a permanent ink pen, to mark the cage size on a piece of sew on twill tape. Sew this on the wrong side at the bottom of the front flap. Right sides together, CAREFULLY place the raw edges BETWEEN THE OPENED (pre-ironed SEAM LINES ON THE TOP PIECE and and sew each one to the top piece in the FOLLOWING ORDER: End 1, End 2, Side 1, Side 2. COMPLETELY OPEN ALL SEAM LINES. Be EXTREMELY careful not to catch ANY of the opened, ironed seams, which fall at the beginning and end of the seam line, into the stitching. Iron all seam lines open On the wrong side, Fold EACH of the 1 seams under and sew down to secure the seams into a ½ bound seam. For other size cages: Measure Cage Length, Width and Height. The manufacturers give cage WIDTH measurements at the bulge at the center of the cage sides. The measurement to use for the WIDTH should be taken at the TOP of the cage for proper fit of the cage cover. For the top piece, Add 2 to the length and 2.0 to the width For the side pieces, Add 2 to the length and 2 to the height For the end pieces, Add 2 to the width and 2 to the height Slot and Tab sizes would remain the same. Note: These cage sizes are for the specific cages used by the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Cage sizes vary widely, even with the same cage size number, so measure carefully. Use the measurements at the TOP of the cage for Length and Width, not the numbers at the middle of the cage where it bows out. For a #200 cage (actual size 24 L x 20 mid (15.5 top) W x 19 H): 1.75 yards of 58/60 fabric For a #300 cage (actual size 28 L x 22.5 mid (16.5 top) W x 25 H): 2.5 yards of 58/60 fabric Buddy Cage (actual size 36.5 L x 27 mid (21.5 top) W x 30.5 H): 3.5 yards of 58/60 fabric Slot position would have to be centered (if used) and tab positions would have to be adjusted for cage sizes other than the 100.
