ICLEI s role as a network Network of over 1100 cities all over the world. Water Campaign actively followed in certain parts of the world with scope of expansion. Platform for sharing experiences, research and know-how.

ICLEI and LGs in Water Campaign Water Campaign in Australia Freshwater management to reduce consumption and improve water quality by LGs. 126 participants in Australia 5 milestone process of inventorisation of water resources, target setting, approval of action plan, implementation and monitoring. ICLEI and sustainable wastewater management ACCESSanitation Different ICLEI offices along with regional institutions are partners. Aim to promote sustainable sanitation in south asia and south east asian cities. Formation of city sanitation plans and pilot projects. Collaboration between technical experts and LGs. Partnership between Indian and Philippine cities.

ICLEI and Capacity Building for LGs LoGo Water (2005-08) Aim to promote Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) amongst LGs in Southern Africa. Partnership with 8 LGs from 4 countries (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique) in the Limpopo River basin Development of capacity building materials in English, French and Portuguese tailored for local governments in the region. Development of guidance and research on IWRM for LGs. http://www.iclei-europe.org/logowater

ICLEI and Interventions in Existing National Projects Urban Climate Project Aim is to intervene on JNNURM funded projects to incorporate climate protection in them. 2 cities participating supported by ICLEI experts. DPR being prepared for Decentralised Waste Water Treatment System in a residential complex in Rajkot. Pilot implementation of 24x7 water supply in Coimbatore, including water auditing, bulk metering, household surveying, and formation of implementation plan.

ICLEI and LGs in Global Initiatives Istanbul Water Consensus ICLEI collaborated with the City of Istanbul, UCLG and the World Water Council to initiate the Istanbul Water Consensus. The IWC encourages political commitment for local responses to global pressures such as rapid urbanisation, climate change and demographic shifts, with further impetus to local governments efforts contributing to MDGs. Cities from over 30 countries have signed the IWC. http://www.iclei.org/index.php?id=9406

ICLEI and LGs in research and policy SWITCH - Managing Water for the City of the Future (2006-11) ICLEI is one of 33 partners. UNESCO-IHE led project on Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM). Partners include universities, research organisations and some local governments. Aim to speed up the process of uptake and innovation by researchers and stakeholders in the city working together to break down barriers between science, policy and practice. ICLEI and Urban Water Management and Governance SWIM Sustainable Water-Integrated Management Pilot demonstration activity in Baguio city. Development of 8 point water agenda for Baguio city adopted by LG and adoption of continual improvement mechanism by the LG. Incentive Prize awarded for Good Practices by the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED). http://www.iclei.org/index.php?id=11018

Indian Scenario Water crisis being felt by almost all cities. Large and growing urban population, migration, indiscriminate use, unnecessary losses create stress on existing resources. Require management of water and waste water through Capacity development Resources financial and human Political cooperation Government initiatives Urban water infrastructure development - JNNURM Improvement of basic services benchmarking Total sanitation campaign rural areas National Urban Sanitation Policy ICLEI South Asia is involved in interventions in JNNURM projects, Service Level Benchmarking, formation of city sanitation plans.

Conclusions: benefits of networking Ability to tap into the expertise on water and waste water management scattered all over. Sharing of experiences. Transfer of knowledge, know-how. Sharing best practices. Stronger representation in national/regional arena.
