1 General Information IGEL Universal Desktop Converter includes a USB token with IGEL Universal Desktop OS and a SIM card providing the licenses you need to run this firmware on your target system. Both firmware and license are necessary to install IGEL Universal Desktop OS on your system. On the USB token you will find this documentation as well as the IGEL Universal Desktop User Guide (Linux) and the IGEL Universal Management Suite (Windows) with documentation. 2 Installation of firmware and license Tilt up the card slot cover of the USB token and insert a SIM card with license. Make sure your target system will boot from USB device. Plug USB token into a USB port of your target system. Power up system, target system will boot from USB token and bring up a boot menu. Following options are available in boot menu: Boot IGEL UD Converter Start the firmware installer image (auto-run after 1 minute). Boot Converter (verbose) Display messages during boot process. Boot from Hard disk Boot with IGEL UD firmware after installation. Memory Test Test of RAM. Following F-Keys are available in boot menu: Press F1 to get help on the option selected. Press F2 to select a language for the current menu. Press F3 to change the video mode (DDC setting). Please activate DDC mode in case your display does not show the UD Converter. Note: The DDC setting will be default (No DDC) after booting Universal Desktop OS. If necessary you will have to change this option again using IGEL Universal Management Suite. Boot IGEL UD Converter image (standard or verbose mode). Select a language for installation and confirm the license information.
Select a target drive (if more than one drive was found) Universal Desktop OS will be installed here (existing data will be deleted!). Click on Install Firmware to start the installation process. Note: Installation of IGEL Universal Desktop OS will delete all data stored on the Flash/HDD of your target drive! When installation has finished successfully please shut down the system, remove USB token and boot again with your target drive (IGEL Linux). Welcome to IGEL Universal Desktop OS! 3 Fallback Procedure (ISO Image) If the system does not boot from USB, you can use a fallback procedure for IGEL Universal Desktop OS installation. On the USB token you will find an ISO image Create a CD using this ISO file and boot the system from CD (USB token with SIM card is plugged in as well to provide the firmware license). The installation process will run as described before. 4 Firmware Licensing During installation a license file for your hardware (identified by MAC address) will be generated taking a license from the pool on the SIM card. The license file will by copied to the USB token so you can reinstall IGEL Universal Desktop OS on this system using the same license. All licenses can be found in the licenses folder on the stick. If more than one USB token is used to convert PCs into IGEL Universal Desktops you can copy all license files to one token after installation is done on all target systems. In case you need to re-install Universal Desktop OS on a system only this token is required. 5 Installation process (overview)
6 UDC Token Duplication In case more UD installation devices are needed you can copy the UDC token (installer image) to a standard USB stick. These additional copies can be used to install IGEL Universal Desktop OS on your target devices the licenses have to be distributed using IGEL Universal Management Suite. Prerequisites The original UDC token provides a copy tool UDC2Stick.exe. The tool can be found in directory Software & Documentation/Software/UDC2Stick/ The software will work on 32 Bit Windows systems (Windows XP, Vista and 2003 Server). Minimum size of target USB stick is 512 MB.
