CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY CA Technologies optimizes business systems worldwide with enterprise data model CLIENT PROFILE Industry: IT Organization: CA Technologies Employees: 13,600 Revenue: $4.8 billion (FY2012) BUSINESS CA Technologies helps its customers manage and secure IT more effectively across mainframe, distributed, virtual and cloud environments. Its customers include the majority of the Fortune 2000. CHALLENGE To optimize efficiency, CA Technologies needs to ensure maximum integration across its business systems and datasets. To support this integration, the company embarked on an enterprise-wide data modeling exercise. SOLUTION CA Technologies is using CA ERwin Data Modeler to model data from 48 business applications and 456 entities. The solution enables a collaborative approach to data modeling. BENEFIT With an enterprise data model and warehouse, CA Technologies will be able to seamlessly integrate its business systems and data, which will help maximize productivity and agility. agility made possible

Business Helping customers embrace change CA Technologies provides IT management solutions that help organizations manage and secure their IT environments and deliver more flexible services to the business. The software company has a proven track record across mainframe, distributed, virtual and cloud environments and offers industry-leading solutions. Its customer base includes the majority of the Fortune 2000 as well as government organizations and companies in diverse industries worldwide. From IT service assurance to project and portfolio management, CA Technologies helps its customers increase business agility and embrace change. Challenge Optimizing business processes with seamless system and data integration CA Technologies relies on a number of IT systems to support its day-to-day business processes from customer relationship and contract management to accounting and procurement. The integration of these systems is core to optimising the overall efficiency of key business processes. As, Senior Vice President, Information Management at CA Technologies, explains, For each business system to work well on a standalone basis is not enough. We need to be able to integrate datasets and workflows across multiple systems to provide a seamless service to our customers and empower our employees. We need to be able to integrate datasets and workflows across multiple systems. For example, the company s ERP system tracks when customer contract renewals are due. Via integration with the customer relationship management system, it automatically alerts sales teams when contracts are nearing renewal to ensure revenue generation opportunities are maximized. 02

Certain business reports also require information from multiple sources, such as sales statements collated by customer or by product. With integration between business systems, CA Technologies can produce accurate reports automatically. To enable these and other integrations, CA Technologies requires in-depth visibility of its business systems and the data being stored. With numerous systems across various business areas and hundreds of data points, gaining this visibility, however, is extremely complex. To simplify the management and integration of existing and new systems, we were keen to establish an enterprise data warehouse, explains Anand. As the first step in this initiative, we needed to build a normalized data model that would help us understand the flow of data between our business systems. To ensure the data model could be worked on collaboratively, the team needed a robust, scalable and highly visual data modeling environment. The team is divided between the US, the UK and India, so needs to be able to collaborate across time zones and geographies, adds Anand. Solution An enterprise-wide data model CA Technologies has standardized its data modeling activities on CA ERwin Data Modeler r9.0, using the solution to create a conceptual model of the data that powers its business systems enterprise-wide. Using CA ERwin Data Modeler simplified collaboration across the business. In the first instance, we engaged with senior business managers to verify a high-level conceptual model, explains Anand. The team then involved experts with more specialized knowledge to add detail within the different business areas. 03

Using CA ERwin Data Modeler simplified collaboration across the business and helped us ensure consistency with multiple members of the team working on the model concurrently, comments Anand. It has an intuitive graphical interface and provides a centralized view of key data definitions. The CA Technologies solution integrates seamlessly with Informatica Metadata Manager to enable the team to update and manage data definitions to ensure they remain relevant to the business. The model covers eight subject areas, including regulation, accounting and communication. Each area and system has a logical model with entities and attributes, which can be used to create databases more effectively, explains Anand. In total, the model incorporates 456 entities and consolidates data sourced from 48 systems. The data modeling project started in October 2012, and the team expects to have accurately modeled the entire business by July 2013. This will provide the foundations that CA Technologies needs to create a comprehensive data warehouse. Once the initial modelling exercise has been completed, the team will continue to use CA ERwin Data Modeler to maintain data quality, with changes only allowed to databases after the update has been modeled and verified within the CA Technologies solution. This change management process will safeguard consistency and prevent changes from causing problems in the future. Benefit Maximizing staff productivity and business agility CA ERwin Data Modeler has enabled CA Technologies to fast-track its data warehouse initiative and safeguard data integrity and integrations. CA ERwin Data Modeler enables us to bring together data in a way that just wouldn t be possible otherwise, comments Anand. It also simplifies collaboration, peer review, change management and version control to maximize the efficiency and quality of data modeling activities. We will be able to identify further opportunities for integration and process optimization. 04

As a result of the enterprise data modeling and warehouse project, CA Technologies will be able to: Seamlessly integrate systems across all business areas Maximize staff productivity and ensure sales opportunities are not missed Reduce operating costs Deploy and integrate new business systems faster and more effectively. Anand comments, With a comprehensive data model in place, we will be able to identify further opportunities for integration and process optimization that will help ensure the ongoing efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the business.
