Catalogue 2014 Reformatted 2014 ISBN: 9781927160312 Price: $ 80.00 The price includes a disk Classical Studies Activities Book 8 Level 1 Course: The Classical World This is another in the popular series for teachers and students using a range of teaching and learning styles. Classical Studies Activities Book 8 offers a complete course for Level 1 classes. It was marketed as a boxed set but the teachers preferred format is as an Activities Book so the material has been reformatted. It has class teaching activities and individual tasks for both home and school work. There are also examination practice activities and Internal Assessments. This Course has been created for the benefit of teachers and students of Level 1 Classical Studies. It will meet Learning Objectives 6.1 and 6.2. Within this broad course students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to: Demonstrate understanding of the ideas and values of the classical world in a selection of the books in The Aeneid. demonstrate understanding of an important historical figure in the classical world in Alexander the Great. demonstrate understanding of the significance of work/s of art in the classical world. Increase the student s knowledge of the chronology and geography of the classical world and prepare students to complete NCEA Assessments 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 1.5. Short introductory Visuals have been provided on a disk for each part of the Course. The course covers three Themes: Theme 1 Alexander the Great is an interesting figure and most students will have some idea of who he was. The students must demonstrate an understanding of him as an important historical figure in the classical world. Alexander moves east from Greece. The geographical material is also important in current events at this time. The emphasis in this course is on Alexander s personal qualities which contributed to his achievements and on his military ability and leadership. The two periods of his campaign that have been used for the studies are taken from the early part of the campaign as far as Egypt (334-331 BC) and from the later part of his campaign in the east of the empire. This gives a contrast in the strategies and tactics and the groups of people that he encountered. Theme 2 This theme must allow the students to demonstrate an understanding of the ideas and values of Aeneas and his followers and of Virgil in seeking a site for a new city. The threads link leadership, city building, geography and art to the rest of the course. Aeneas moves west from Greece. Theme 3 The Art and Architecture has been carefully selected. The pieces are all large in scale. They have some qualities in common and sufficient differences to be compared and contrasted. Another of the criteria for selection was their location in Italy making it possible for a school trip to see the pieces within a fairly confined region. offers this product so that schools which purchase Classical Studies Activities Book 8, Level 1 Course, The Classical World as a resource can photocopy the pages for their students use. 2

Products can be viewed and ordered from the site: www.polygraphianz.com Second Edition 2014 ISBN: 9781927160305 Price: $ 45.00 Multiple Copies (5+): $40.50 (10% Discount) Athenian Socio-Political Life The City of Athena Second Edition This is the second edition of The City of Athena. This reformatted book is a reorganisation, revision and extension of Athenian material published through. It reflects the new approach in the Classical Studies curriculum at each level. Some material has been revised and reused and new material has been incorporated into this edition. The language is straight forward; technical terms are explained; it is illustrated with maps, charts and photographs. Students will find this book also provides a sound background for subsequent studies at tertiary level. Raewyn Gilmour The Themes divide into Tasks that can be used as foci in class or as discrete units of work for the students to complete on their own. The Extension Work can be used for Internal Assessment or as enrichment for advanced students. Examination practice is included. Primary sources are provided for students to use as evidence. The City of Athena is an introduction to the history of Athens in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The material will be useful and relevant for any level and as preparation for any style of assessment. In a Classical Studies course of study the political and social aspects are vital for the understanding of any other aspects of the society which may be studied. Literature, Drama, Art and Architecture all need to be set within the society of the time if they are to be fully appreciated by the student. The City of Athena provides those aspects and has them set within the political, social, cultural and military life of Athens. Sculpture emerges during the 6th century BC and develops during the 5th century BC. Architecture is set in its context of the rebuilding of Athens after the Persian Wars. Literature studied in detail is set in context. Aristophanes Wasps and Plato s Apology are primary source material for the procedures of the Law Courts. Plato s Euthyphro and Crito are examples of the educational process of dialectic and his Phaedo provides a philosophical discussion. The way individuals and groups participated in aspects of Athenian life are studied in detail: the political institutions, Law Courts, festivals and dramatic performances in the theatre, leisure activities, family occasions and cultural and religious practices. The position of foreigners, metics and slaves is supported by primary evidence. The third Theme follows the period of the Peloponnesian War when the fortunes of Athens and her people fluctuated from great successes and minor set backs to humilitating defeats and modest recovery. Other products support this study. See pages 4-5, 6-7 & 12 and the website. 3
