Springboard s resource gateway HOSPITALITY LEISURE TOURISM Produced By: Detailed description of 20 steps in guest bedroom and bathroom cleaning and servicing routine

STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 STEP 4 STEP 5 Check cleaning trolley contents and equipment At the beginning of each shift make sure your trolley is fully stocked to cover all the rooms. Refer to your hotel checklist. Top up refill bottles or prepare microfibre mops and cloths. Check that vacuum is in working order and make sure the cable is intact, report any defects to maintenance and change dust bags if necessary. Knock on guest room door When entering a room knock three times announce : housekeeping and wait for a reply. If there is no answer enter the room using your key card, secure the door with a wedge and announce yourself again by calling Good Morning Housekeeping. Before you start your cleaning tasks double check that the guest is not in the bathroom. Open the curtains, blinds and windows to ventilate the room. Adjust the air conditioning and radiators (you will get hot as you work). Flush toilet and apply cleaner Wearing gloves, flush toilet, expose water line and apply chemical under the rim and in the bowl to allow contact time. Brush the bowl and leave the toilet brush in the bowl with the lid up while you carry on with other cleaning tasks. Look out for any discoloration as there are special products for renovating the toilet bowl. If necessary, apply heavy duty toilet cleaner. Check for lost property, collect rubbish Check for personal belongings and debris for example under the bed, in wardrobes and drawers. Collect all lost property and rubbish. Wear gloves if lost property items appear soiled or there is considerable debris. Place collected items in clean plastic bag ready to hand in. Dispose of debris in rubbish bin/bag. Check room and report any faults or breakages. Check for breakages or missing items and report/replace e.g. smashed tea pot. Do a maintenance check and report e.g. any non-working light bulbs, hook on door hanging off etc. STEP 6 STEP 7 Remove room service trays, soak other crockery, empty bins Wearing gloves remove any room service trays/crockery (ideally send any room service trays to the kitchen to be washed); collect any china/glasses used in the room and put to soak in a sanitising solution; empty bins. Strip the bed First place any blankets, cushions and covers onto a chair. Put on gloves. Remove all soiled towels and robes from the bathroom and put these on the bed. Strip the bed, wrapping all dirty linen within the bottom sheet. Remove all dirty linen from

the room and place in laundry basket. Carry out a visual check of the mattress protector and replace if stained. Make bed with clean linen Remove gloves. Select clean fresh laundered linen from the trolley. Make bed. Move the bed out from the wall being careful when bending and lifting to avoid straining yourself. Reject any stained or ripped linen by tying a knot in it and placing it in the reject bag. Complete the laundry list. Finish the bed in line with the hotel s standards. A quick and easy way to put on pillow cases is to fold the pillow in half to put in the case. Don t put the bed back until you have vacuumed the carpet. Clean hostess tray, other crockery, glassware etc. and replace in location Wearing gloves rinse crockery from hostess tray, mini fridge glasses, bathroom tumblers etc. left to soak. Dry with clean cloths, including separate glass cloth. Clean other items such as ashtrays. Replace in correct locations. Clean the basin, vanity areas, tiles, and walls Now its time to clean the bathroom. Wearing gloves. start by wetting the sink thoroughly and spray multi surface cleaner on a sponge or use a damp microfibre cloth to wash the entire area including underneath the sink and vanity unit. Make sure all soap deposits and water stains are removed. When clean rinse the area and buff the taps; ensure there are no water marks. Clean and polish the mirrors using a glass cleaner or a microfibre cloth. Use a damp microfibre cloth to remove any marks on the door. Periodically clean high level light fittings, walls and ceiling. Pay attention to air vents. Clean the shower and bath Clean the shower and bath. Make sure you are wearing shoe protectors to avoid slipping and gloves for personal protection. Start by thoroughly wetting the shower and/or bath. Use a scrubber mop to clean the tiles and walls. With a sponge and multi surface cleaner or damp microfibre cloth clean the taps, shower head and pay extra attention to the plug hole and chrome fittings. Scrub the shower tray and/or bath inside and out. For any stubborn stains use a cream cleaner. Make sure any shower curtains are clean and stain free; if needed replace them. Make sure any shower screens are cleaned with glass cleaner sprayed on a cloth or use a microfibre cloth. Rinse and dry all areas with a drying cloth. Buff the chrome until sparkling. Finish cleaning the toilet Now it is time to finish cleaning the toilet into which you have previously put the toilet cleaner to let it soak. The toilet cleaner has been doing its work, so it is now time to brush and flush the toilet, wearing gloves and, if appropriate, goggles. STEP 8 STEP 9 STEP 10 STEP 11 STEP 12

STEP 13 STEP 14 STEP 15 STEP 16 Using a multisurface cleaner sprayed onto a cloth clean the outside of the toilet. Wipe all around the cistern and the handle, then the lid, the toilet seat, and all around the outside of the toilet bowl and under it. Then buff the toilet seat dry. Take off and dispose of cloths and gloves used in cleaning the toilet. Replenish bathroom supplies Without wearing gloves, refill toileteries, toilet paper, tissues and bags and replenish towels to hotel standards. Clean bathroom floor The last job is the bathroom floor. Wearing clean gloves, vacuum to remove any debris and hair. Mop the floor starting in the far corners and working towards the door. Use the multi surface cleaner sprayed on a sponge or the mop. The corners need special care - the corners, the edges, the base of the toilet bowl, wherever the floor meets a vertical surface, these are the places where soil and hair accumulate. Take care along these edges and work towards the door. Pay particular attention to the area behind the bathroom door. Leave to dry, then do a final visual check in the bathroom. Damp dust the bedroom Time for the bedroom. Damp dust all surfaces following a sequence such as starting at the door working anti clockwise around the room to ensure no areas are missed. Start with high areas otherwise any dust that falls will leave dirt on the carpet, furniture etc. Use a high level dusting tool and include tops of pictures, mirrors, pelmets and air vents. Then move to the lower surfaces using a multi surface cleaner sprayed onto a cloth or a damp microfibre cloth to wipe all surfaces including window ledges, inside wardrobes and drawers. Pay particular attention to the telephone, TV remote and other hand contact areas such as handles and switches. Polish any wooden furniture with furniture polish as required. Periodically damp dust skirting ledges. Clean mirrors, glass and artwork Clean all mirrors and glass starting with the TV. Use a microfibre cloth on the TV do not use chemicals on plasma or flat screen televisions. Use a clean microfibre cloth to carefully dust artwork. Clean all other surfaces with either a glass cleaner sprayed onto a cloth or a lint free cloth. STEP 17 Clean windows inside First close the windows and leave them closed, unless the room still needs airing or is very hot. Clean windows with glass cleaner or a lint free cloth.

Replenish guest supplies www.resource-gateway.co.uk education@springboarduk.org.uk Remove gloves. Replace cleaned crockery, glasses etc. in correct locations e.g. on the hostess tray, by the mini fridge. Replenish tea, coffee, biscuits etc. on the hostess tray and, if applicable, supplies in the mini fridge, having first checked what the last guest has consumed; replenish stationery, magazines etc. as required. Vacuum bedroom floor Vacuum carpeted floors or mop tiled floors starting at the end of the room and working towards the door. Remember to vacuum behind the bed and put all furniture back into position. Final visual check Carry out a final visual check and ensure any replacement items are in working order. Re-set telephone and confirm that room is ready. On leaving squirt air freshener, turn off the lights, close and lock the door. STEP 18 STEP 19 STEP 19
