1 Campus Services Hints and tips for residents We have compiled this webpage to help University residents with simple tips and hints about cleaning kitchen areas - which are residents responsibility. We hope you find the information useful. If you need further assistance and your cleaner or Housekeeper (details on kitchen wall) are not available, please contact us in Cleaning Services (4804 or 4807 during working hours). We recommend you obtain clean cloths and detergent (eg washing up liquid) and rubbish bags. Remove the contents and discard any out of date or unwanted items. Put the food somewhere cool. 2) Dilute some detergent with hot water in a bowl or bucket. Take out all removable shelves and compartments; wash them in the water with a clean cloth. Leave to drain, dry off. 3) With fresh hot soapy water, and a clean, squeezed-out cloth, wipe the whole of the inside of the fridge, starting from the top. Rinse the cloth often and change the water as necessary. 4) Wipe the fridge out with a clean dry cloth, plug it back in and turn on power. Replace the shelves and compartments, and put away the food/drink.

2 Using the Fridge Make sure the fridge is set to a suitable temperature (usually no. 3). Keep cold air in by keeping the door shut as much as possible. Keep your foodstuff to a minimum, so everyone has space to store theirs. If you over-fill the fridge, cold air can t circulate correctly. This can result in food being spoilt and means the fridge is running inefficiently, wasting energy. Store cooked food separately from raw food, for your safety. Cooked foods should be stored on the top shelves and raw food on the bottom shelves. Put raw food in suitable containers, so if it leaks it does not contaminate other items. Report any fault to the Porters lodge at once, and transfer your food to another fridge (with the residents agreement). Cleaning FREEZERS 1) Before you can clean the freezer, you must defrost it. Switch off and unplug it. Empty the freezer of its contents. These will stay frozen longer if you put them all together in a container with a lid. Newspaper is a good insulator. 2) Leave the freezer door open to speed up defrosting. Don t use any sharp objects to scrape off the ice from inside the freezer. Put bowls of hot water on the shelves. 3) As melting ice will flow onto the floor, try to avoid this by putting dry cloths or newspaper on the floor under the front of the freezer, and try to soak up water from the bottom of freezer with cloths before it overflows. 4) When all the ice has gone wipe out all shelves and the inside of the freezer with clean hot water and clean cloth, starting from the top. 5) Plug the freezer back in and switch on the power, close the door and turn the switch on the front to FASTFREEZE. 6) Replace items in the freezer. Remember to return the freezer to normal freeze later. Useful tip: This is a good time to organise the contents, by making sure everything is identifiable and dividing shelf space between residents. CLEANING OVENS, HOBS AND GRILLS Cleaning the OVEN 1) Wait until the oven has cooled down before cleaning it, to avoid burns. Take out the oven shelves, and wash them with hot soapy water, leave to drain. 2) Use hot soapy water and a squeezed out clean cloth to clean the inside of the oven, and inside the door. Rinse the cloth often and change the water 2

3 as necessary. To finish, wipe inside again with clear water and a clean cloth, to avoid a soapy smell. 3) Clean the front of the oven with hot soapy water and a cloth, and finish it with clear warm water and a clean cloth. Put the shelves back in the oven. Useful tip: place a piece of kitchen foil in the bottom of the oven, this catches any spills during cooking, making the oven easier to clean. Replace the foil when necessary. Cleaning the HOB 1) It is more efficient to wipe off spillages as they occur (before they cook hard) but avoid burns. For a full clean, wait until the hob is cool. 2) Use hot soapy water and a clean cloth to wipe over the hob top. Rinse the cloth often and change the water as necessary. Wipe off any excess water at the end. 3) For stubborn stains and spills, you may need to use an abrasive cloth or sponge to remove them. Rinse and wipe the hob afterwards with warm clear water and clean cloth. Cleaning the GRILL PAN 1) Whilst the grill pan is still warm, immerse it in hot soapy water and leave it for five minutes. Then use fresh hot soapy water and a clean cloth to wash the grill pan. Rinse it well and drain before replacing. 2) For stubborn stains and spillages, you may need to leave the grill pan soaking for longer before washing it. Useful tip place a piece of kitchen foil into the bottom of the grill pan tray, and replace when necessary. This makes cleaning easier. Cleaning MICROWAVES 1) Put a cup of hot water in the microwave, and turn on full power for about two minutes. The steam aids cleaning: it softens spilled food. 2) Remove the cup and the glass turntable. Put the glass turntable in hot soapy water to soak. 3) Turn off the power and unplug the microwave. Use a clean cloth and hot soapy water to wipe all sides of the microwave. Wipe dry afterwards. 4) Wash the glass plate in fresh soapy water, dry it and replace it in the microwave. Re-plug and switch the power on. 5) Do not use any abrasive cloths or sharp objects to clean the inside of the microwave, which is easily scratched. Shared KITCHEN AREAS Residents should wash up their own pots, pans, cutlery etc as soon as possible for hygiene reasons and for politeness. Please keep kitchen worktops, tables, floors and window sills as clear as you can, to allow your 3

4 cleaners to undertake their service clean. The day and date of each service clean for the year, will be displayed on the kitchen noticeboard. Washing up quickly and putting things away in the cupboards allocated will help with this and make everyone s access easier. Space is unavoidably limited for everyone, so personal items which cannot fit into the cupboards allocated to you should be kept in your room. Disposal of RUBBISH, RECYCLING Your cleaners will remove one bag of rubbish out of each kitchen bin, daily. In Ainsty & Hickleton Courts at Halifax College and all of Wentworth College this will be weekly. Please take rubbish excess to this to the bin areas, which are signposted. In the bin areas, please put rubbish inside the bins, do not leave it on the ground. Try to respect the recycling arrangements eg for glass and plastic. Keep broken glass or other sharp objects separate from everyday rubbish, for safety reasons. Wrap sharp items in newspapers, or solid packaging such as a cardboard box, take it at once to the bin area and dispose of it in a thoughtful manner. BUT any needle sharps must be disposed of in the special containers available from Cleaning Services /your cleaner After emptying, the recycling plastic boxes (in the kitchen area) should be washed with hot soapy water and dried off. Useful tip: Placing a piece of newspaper in the bottom of the boxes makes cleaning them easier. Then change the newspaper. Using VACUUM CLEANERS A vacuum cleaner is provided for student domestic indoor use. For your safety, before using it, check the lead for damage/breaks and ensure the plug is not loose or frayed. Check that the attachments: hose, brush and tubes are in good order. Do not use the machine if faulty. Don t attempt to repair a vacuum yourself - report any faults to the Porter s lodge at once. Using UPRIGHT VACUUM CLEANERS 1) Release the length of cable you need and release the handle via the foot pedal. Plug the cleaner in and switch it on. Avoid entangling the cable under the brush head. After using it, unplug it and leave it tidily for other residents. 2) Check the disposable paper dust bag. If the vacuum is in regular use, change the bag every week or when it is three quarters full. Under no circumstances empty the bag and re-use it. Replacement vacuum cleaner bags are supplied by cleaning services, and left in the kitchen areas. If you are unsure how to change the bag, please ask your cleaner. 4

5 3) The machine will be damaged if you allow the machine or its lead to be submerged in water, or use it to suck up liquids. Please don t. Using TUB VACUUM CLEANERS 1) Before use, you need to connect the attachments. Insert the hose into the main body of the vacuum cleaner and twist it until secure. Connect the extension tube onto the hose, and then fit the brush attachment onto the extension tube. 2) Press the cord release/unwind cable to release the length of cable you need, plug into the power and switch it on. 3) For deep pile carpets, release the bristles on the brush attachment by pressing the button on top of the attachment. 4) After using it, unplug it, disconnect the attachments and leave it tidily for other residents. 5) If the vacuum cleaner has a disposable paper dust bag, check it. If the machine is in regular use, change it every week or when three quarters full. Under no circumstances empty the bag and re-use it. Replacement vacuum cleaner bags are supplied by cleaning services, and left in the kitchen areas. If you are unsure how to change the bag, please ask your cleaner. 6) If your vacuum cleaner does not have a disposable paper dust bag, empty it regularly into a waste bin in the kitchen area. Pressing the container release button on the handle of vacuum, remove the container carefully. Grasp the filter (the square piece of white material) and remove it. After emptying the container, refit the filter. 7) The machine will be damaged if you allow the machine or its lead to be submerged in water, or use it to suck up liquids. Please don t. VACATING YOUR ROOM 1) Please leave your room clean and tidy, even though the cleaning staff will do a service clean. 2) When you vacate the room, we advise you to buy some refuse sacks for the inevitable excess rubbish. 3) Make sure you have not left any personal items, as anything left will be assumed to be unwanted. Immediately after you leave, cleaning staff will dispose of all items left in that room or on the walls, and in the allocated kitchen cupboards. We recommend one last look around before handing your key in at the Porters Lodge. Useful Tip: ask a friend to look in your room to confirm it is empty: they may spot something you overlook.
