OPUS1 is a simple interface that allows the user to search and save library music from the OPUS1 online sound server. You can search a variety of styles, instruments, moods, tempos, genres and cue lengths. You can then save the music files to your local hard drive and import them into Pro Tools. The USC School of Cinematic Arts has a licensing agreement with OPUS1 to allow students to use these music tracks in their student films. They are not to be used in non-sca projects. Please be aware that you must turn in a cue sheet for each piece of music that you use to Richard Hyland, the sound department manager. Cue sheets should be emailed to rhyland@cinema.usc.edu. There are a couple of things you need to do BEFORE you go to the OPUS1 Music Search Site. FIRST: Create a new folder on your local hard drive where you want to save your music files. SECOND: Make sure that you are monitoring the computer s audio out or you will not be able to hear the music. Launch the OPUS1 web site. http://opus1.o1engine.com You may browse the library without logging in. If you wish to download files you must login. In the top right hand corner click LOGIN. Enter opus2 for the Email PW: music 1

Under the search tab you can now search for the music you want to use. Click on the speaker icon to listen to the file. Click on the shopping cart icon to add the file to your cart. There are two main ways to perform your search. The first way is to use a combination of the Genre/Style menus and try to narrow down or classify your music. You may search by using the given catagories as in the above illustration. 2

The Second way is to just type out what you are looking for in the Keyword the search field as illustrated below. To play a file, just click on the speaker icon to the right side of the file. Click on the shopping cart icon to add the file to your cart if you intend to save and use the file. 3

You may also create or use an existing bin by clicking the gear wheel to the right of the cart icon and choosing the appropriate bin choice. Click DOWNLOAD on the lower left. 4

You will then see the image below. Choose I AGREE - DOWNLOAD AIF. Do not click MP3. You then get a similar page, and at the bottom click download order. Your music downloads as a zip file. Double click the file to unzip it. Your files should unzip in the downloads folder you made on your desktop as well as an.xls file that can serve as the basis for a cue sheet. 5

CUE SHEETS: The Cue Sheet allows you to keep track of your music cues and enables you to enter time code numbers, keep track of titles composers and publishers and allows you to export Excel spreadsheets. Please be aware that you must email a cue sheet for each piece of music that you use to rhyland@cinema.usc.edu. This means that you must email a final cue list of all music cues used in your project. To create your cue sheets, click on CUE SHEETS (BETA) on the top of the opus page. Then click START A BLANK CUE SHEET. On the cue sheet screen, enter your film s name in Production Title. Under Episode Title / Number, enter your production number. Under Client Name, 6

enter your name. Under Production Co, type USC SCA. Under Program Type, select Feature Film. To fill out information about the music files click the gear icon on the right side and click edit. Switch to the Finder. Copy the file name of the music file minus the.aif extension. In this example, it is Bayou_Baby_Ver 2 - opus05.005_07. 7

On the Opus1 page paste the file name under File name, which is represented by a lowercase f next to the text box. Also select the usage next to the lowercase u. In this case it is Background Instrumental. And finally enter the time code in and out point for your music next to the lowercase i and o. In this case we used 01:00:00:00 and 01:01:30:00. 8

Click SAVE. And then click NEW TRACK and repeat the process for all your music files. Note: Another way to create a cue sheet is to open the.xls file that Opus1 generates and copy paste the cue code into the file name. Then click save. Opus1 automatically updates the writer/publisher file information. 9

Now enter a name for your cue sheet under Generate Report w/name. In this case we used Down on the River Cue Sheet. Click Generate Report w/ Name. The file should now appear in your browser s download window. Email this file to rhyland@cinema.usc.edu Finally After you have saved your song files, you will be able to import them into your editing program.. 10
