Q &A big living in a small family room Please send some design ideas for a small family room! Aero Ivory Sectional & Storage Ottoman Lance Coffee Table w/2 Ottomans Landyn Coffee Table Naomi Wall Unit Elaine Floor Lamp Rustic Accent Nesting Tables Got a question you d like answered in this column? Submit it at: DesignQA@Ashleyfurniture.com -Karen Dear Karen: Think comfy, multi-purpose and space-efficient! Here are just a few ways to make the most out of a small family room... Pick a good TV location. Place the TV in the corner to increase seating capacity; it reserves more wall space for seating, rather than eating up an entire wall for the TV. (Use a stand designed for the corner, or angle a rectangular TV stand not wider than 42-44.) Or surround a long TV wall with shelves so any lost seating space can be used for storage. Invest in a sectional. They re comfy for movie night and they streamline a room. You can wrap it around the corner of a room or float one side out in the open. (If floating a sectional, choose one that s low in height it ll add an airy look that increases the visual size of the room.) Add a floor lamp, a large, multi-purpose coffee table and an accent chair or recliner facing the sectional, if space allows. Choose the perfect coffee table. If space around the table is tight or foot traffic around it heavy consider a round or oval table for its space-saving properties (round corners are also extra-safe for young children). Or, do the reverse and make the coffee table the hub of the room. Choose a large table with drawers and shelves for storing games, remotes, magazines, books, drink coasters and napkins it eliminates the need for a space-hogging wall unit or even end tables. You could also use a large upholstered storage ottoman it lets you put your feet up, too! (Add a large tray on top for food and drinks.) Use nesting tables next to a chair; you can spread the nested tables around the room when needed. A coffee table with nesting tables or footrests is also handy! Choose furniture that looks light and airy, with overhanging edges and see-through sides. Being able to see the walls and floor through the furniture makes a space seem larger than it is! Choose a simple color scheme; a monochromatic scheme (light and dark variations on one color) will increase the perceived size of the room. So will painting wall trim the same color as the walls and using drapes the same tone as the wall paint. Avoid dark-colored walls not because they make the room look smaller than it is, but because they make lighter-colored furnishings in front of them look bigger than they are! 8 www.ashleyfurniturehomestore.com
