Race Day Schedule (cont d ) 7:45 am Athletes can access the pools area Athletes must arrive at pre-race staging area on bench at the end of the pool at least 15 minutes prior to their estimated start time. Athletes MUST wear color bracelet provided in your race package. This will assist volunteers in determining proper turnaround on the run. The bracelet must be on before you start the swim. 7:45 am Transition zone closes for start of race and will re-open once all cyclists are off the course. Bike Course Notes Age Distance Loops 6/7 & 5&U 1.3 km 1 8/9 3.9 km 3 10/11 4.6 km 1 12/13 9.2 km 2 14/15 9.2 km 2 16-19 18.4 km 4 Safety a couple of sharp corners and construction areas Not a closed course, there will be pedestrian & car traffic No tri gear on bikes below age 14. All 14/15 and 16-19 bikes must be draft legal (i.e. typical road bike profile, no aero bars extending past brake hoods, no disc wheels) Athlete s responsible for counting their own laps Timing loops will verify laps for ASG qualifiers. Run Course Athletes responsible for counting their own laps Aid station located immediately following transition as athletes enter run course and also when they turn for second run lap. Remember to put your wristband/bracelet on in the morning before you arrive at the pool. No wristband and no timing chip, NO START and therefore NO FINISH TIME! Timing loops will verify laps for ASG Qualifiers at 12-13 & 14-15 turn arounds. Be sure to cross the loop. Athletes are still responsible to count their laps. 2016 Calgary KOS Triathlon 18
Timing & Results Timing points are: Entrance to transition from the swim; Bike exit from transition; Bike lap outside near transition / bike turnaround; Entrance into transition from bike; Exit from transition area to run; 12/13 run turnaround point; 14/15 run turnaround point; Finish line Athletes must complete correct number of laps and are ultimately responsible for own lap counts. Each competitor will be given colored wrist band so volunteers can identify age groups and run turnaround. No results are expected until completion of 5 & under race, assuming no timing problems! Parking & Spectators To assist safety of race, please ensure you are parked before 8:00 am to avoid conflict with race. Please arrive early! Please avoid driving out of parking areas during race. Expect delays if you do! Assuming no problems, bike course should be clear by 11:00 am or shortly after. Ensure that athlete lanes are kept clear, particularly on road due to high speed bike traffic. ONLY athletes and officials are allowed in transition following start of race. Volunteers will assist 8/9, 6/7, and 5&under age groups where necessary. Please respect instructions from officials and volunteers. 2016 Calgary KOS Triathlon 20
Volunteers & Safety Volunteers will be at all intersections. Please follow their instructions. There are right lane closures on 32nd Ave and 24th Ave, but the streets are not 100% closed to traffic. PLEASE be careful and attentive while on the bike course. If you are unable to finish the race, please notify a race official and turn in your timing chip before you leave. Meeting location for lost/missing children is medical tent. This type of event depends heavily on volunteers to be successful and safe. We NEED more volunteers! Please talk to Marisol Lessard immediately after this meeting. Volunteer check-in is 7:30 am unless you have volunteered to course set-up at 6 am. Hot coffee and snacks will be served to volunteers. Volunteers will also receive a T-shirt and be eligible for prizes. 2016 Calgary KOS Triathlon 21
A Few Rules SWIM Swim can use any stroke. Can stop and stand on bottom, but no walking. Must swim. Some discretion with 5&U, 6/7 and 8/9 age groups. 5&U, 6/7 and 8/9 age groups can use life jackets (no water wings) in swim if necessary. No propulsion devices (fins, paddles, pull-buoys) Volunteers in water at arm s length of younger swimmers If you re having trouble in the water, raise your hand, a lifeguard or volunteer will assist you. Take your swim cap & goggles all the way to transition after the swim TRANSITION Transition put on HELMET FIRST and do up the chinstrap! Walk bike to mount line. Keep it as clutter-free as possible, i.e. only what you need for bike & run. All bags & boxes should be out of the way and can be stored in a locker in the change rooms 2016 Calgary KOS Triathlon 22
A Few Rules (Cont d) BIKE Note that road style clipless pedals, aero bars and race wheels are only permitted in the 14/15 and 16-19 age groups. For 13 & Under ages: No aero bars permitted. Flat pedals (no straps) and mountain bike-style clipless pedal systems (where the shoe sole touches the ground BEFORE the cleat) with single or double sided SPD (mountain bike) pedals are permitted. (Running shoes and flat pedals are recommended for short distances.) Triathlon Canada guidelines also require that aero bars must be draft legal. All races are non-drafting. No drafting or blocking! RUN Run - torsos must be covered and competitors must wear race number on bike and run. GENERAL Spectators must not enter transition area during race. No outside assistance (except designated parent for 5&U; volunteers will assist 7&U + 8/9 where necessary) Be careful not to come too close to the timing mats prior to your race start as your race will begin if you have your timing chip on No listening devices of any kind for safety purposes 2016 Calgary KOS Triathlon 23
Common Infractions Missing a lap on the bike or run Turning around at the wrong run turnaround Not going all the way to your designated run turnaround The above mistakes require us to estimate a penalty and add it to your total time or could result in disqualification 2016 Calgary KOS Triathlon 24
Penalties Penalties will be assessed by the Race Officials, supplied by the Alberta Triathlon Association Infraction may be applied in one of two ways, depending upon the infraction: stop and go, or Penalty time added on at the end of the race Common infractions are published on the Kronos KOS website 2016 Calgary KOS Triathlon Slide 25

Final Thoughts Some Reminders for tomorrow: Remember that we re here to have fun, to enjoy the sport and celebrate personal excellence Please treat other competitors, officials, volunteers and spectators with fairness, respect and courtesy Be prepared for any weather! if there is the potential for snow (!!!) or rain, please come prepared!
