Editing the Slide Master Note: this document was designed for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003. Other versions may differ and require different procedures. The Slide Master allows you to set the background, font, colour scheme and headers and footers for all of your slides. It also allows you to set up different schemes for title and content slides. Slide Masters can also be saved and reused over different presentations. The Slide Master frees you to focus on the content of your slides and deal with the ascetics later. 1. Switch to the Slide Master view by clicking Slide Master under the View Master menu. 2. Insert a new Title Master by right-clicking on the white space beneath content master and choosing New Title Master. 1
3. Change the colour scheme by choosing Slide Design Color Scheme from the dropdown menu on the upper right of the screen (see picture below). Apply your chosen scheme to both the Slide Master and the Title Master by clicking the drop-down menu and selecting Apply to All Masters (for this example we will use the black background with white text). 4. Change the title colour by highlighting the title and clicking on the font colour icon on the menu bar located at the bottom of the screen. Choose a new colour (for this example will we use green). 5. Insert a line under the title by selecting the line tool on the bottom tool bar. Draw a line underneath the title (that you just made green). 2
6. Right-click on the line you just drew and select the Format AutoShapes option. 7. Under the Format AutoShape menu, choose the drop-down arrow next to the color sub-menu and select the colour you would like the line to be (for this example, we will make it the same green as the title). Click OK. 3
8. Right-click on the (now green) line and click copy. Choose the Title Master in the menu (see the red circle on the picture) on the left and paste the line into that slide. Move the line so it is just beneath the title (see the red arrow). 9. On the Title Master, highlight the text Click to edit Master subtitle style and change the font colour to blue (see Step 4). 10. Switch back to the Slide Master and right-click on the first bullet (see the red circle) in the main body of the slide to pull up the menu. Choose Bullets and Numbering. 4
11. In the Bullets and Numbering menu, choose the style for your bullets (for this example we will choose the solid boxes). In the color drop-down menu choose the color for this bullet (in this example we will choose green). Click OK to close this menu 12. Repeat step 10 by right-clicking on the second bullet and choosing a new colour (for this example, choose the blue from the subtitle of the Title Master). 13. Repeat step 10 by right-clicking on the third bullet and choosing a new colour (for this example, choose white). 14. Delete the fourth and fifth levels from the Slide Master (if you have that many subpoints you probably want to create a new slide). 15. Highlight the text Click to edit Master title style and click on the arrow next to the font dropdown menu. Choose Tahoma. 16. Highlight the text in the content area (i.e. the bulleted text) and select the font Verdana from the dropdown font menu. 17. On the Title Master, change the font for both the title and the sub-title to Tahoma. 5
18. On the main menu bar, select Headers and Footers located under the View tab. 19. On the Header and Footer menu, you can select to include the date and your slides, the slide number or a footer message. For this example ensure that slide number is selected, and replace <Presentation Name> and <Your Name> with information that suites you. When you are finished, click Apply to All. (Note: the information you just entered will not be shown while you are in Slide Master view). 20. You are now finished editing your Slide Masters. Under the View menu in the main menu bar choose Normal to return to the presentation. You should see a copy of the Title Master ready to edit. You may add new slides by either selecting Insert New Slide or by pressing CTRL+M. 6
