System s System s Note: Disk compression must not be used. Business/Professional Edition Database Server (with integrated client and NVR) The maximum number of clients is 9 (including Web clients). The maximum number of readers is 512. Note: The server is also installed with the Symmetry SMS client software and a Symmetry NVR 1. Note: The PC should not be used to view live or recorded video, other than for demonstration or occasional, light use. Processor 2 RAM 2 Monitor 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate Edition (with SP1). 32-bit Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition (with SP2). See note page 1-9 for Windows Vista. 32-bit Windows XP Professional (with SP3). Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66GHz minimum (E6700). 1GB minimum. Use a minimum of 2GB if there are more than 256 card readers or the PC is also used as a Symmetry NVR 1. A minimum of 5GB of available disk space is required for SMS use. An additional 250GB and network storage is needed if the PC is also used as a Symmetry NVR (see the Digital Video Design Guide). Peripherals See page 1-9. Database 1280 x 1024 minimum resolution. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange Server 2010 is required on the SMS database server if alarm or workflow emails are to be sent through an SMTP mail server. If encrypted workflow emails are enabled, fully test operation before completing system deployment. 1 The PC should not be used as a Symmetry NVR if the number of readers exceeds 128. 2 The processor and RAM specifications given here are recommended for new PCs that need to give good performance under most conditions. Older machines with less RAM may provide adequate performance, particularly when Windows XP/2003 is used, a small number of readers are used, and there is no requirement to use the PC as a Symmetry NVR. Note: An SMS Professional Edition server can be upgraded to a Global Edition regional server by re-running the SMS installation software using the appropriate license number. Both the existing and new software must be the same version. Security Management System Software Installation Manual: Introduction 1-3

System s Separate Client PC (Business, Professional, Enterprise or Global) Processor 1 RAM 1 Monitor 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate Edition (with SP1). 32-bit Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition (with SP2). See note page 1-9 for Windows Vista. 32-bit Windows XP Professional (with SP3). The recommended processor type is Intel Core 2 Duo. The recommended processor speed depends on the number of digital video cameras (if any) simultaneously viewed at the client: 0 cameras: 2.66GHz minimum (E6700) 1-36 MPEG-4 cameras or 1-19 H.264 2 Cameras: 2.66GHz min.(e6700) 37-72 MPEG-4 cameras or 20-30 H.264 2 Cameras: 3.00GHz min.(e6850) 0 cameras: 1GB min. 1-36 MPEG-4 cameras or 1-19 H.264 2 Cameras: 1GB minimum 37-72 MPEG-4 cameras or 20-30 H.264 2 Cameras: 2GB minimum A minimum of 1GB of available disk space is required for SMS use. Peripherals See page 1-9. 1280 x 1024 minimum resolution. 1 The processor and RAM specifications given here are recommended for new PCs that need to give good performance under most conditions. Older machines with less RAM may provide adequate performance, particularly when Windows XP/2003 is used and there is no requirement to view video. When the PC is used to view video, the processor and RAM specifications assume that each camera uses a maximum 2CIF resolution (704x288 PAL; 704x240 NTSC) at 6 frames per second, with low motion and moderate detail. 2 H.264 cameras require additional processing and decoding. Therefore, fewer H.264 cameras can be viewed per PC. 1-4 Security Management System Software Installation Manual: Introduction

s for Peripherals and Other Equipment s for Peripherals and Other Equipment Before installing Symmetry, please ensure that any required third-party drivers (or applications) are compatible with the version of Windows you intend to use. This is particularly important for 64-bit operating systems, which require drivers written specifically for those operating systems. Further guidance for third-party integrations supported by Symmetry can be obtained from your local technical support representative. COM Ports A card providing two additional ports (COM3 and COM4) may be required, depending on the number and type of chains and other peripherals connected to the client. If such a card is used, COM3 and COM4 must use unique interrupts and must be high-speed asynchronous ports that use the 16550AN UART. Alternatively, an Equinox board can be used, as described below. COM Port Expander Equinox 8-port or 16-port SuperSerial Multiport boards may be used: 8-port: SST-8P PCI card, with FO8-DB cable. 16-port: SST-16P PCI card and DB-25 connector. Printer Any Windows-compatible printer can be used, although a laser printer is recommended. Network printers can be used. Card Encoder The following encoders are supported: Standalone Cardman 5x21. This provides support for Mifare Plus cards and the latest Classic MIFARE cards supporting 7 bit UID (driver provided on SMS installation media in Symmetry\Extras). Standalone MIFARE Pegoda (driver provided on SMS installation media in Symmetry\Extras). GEMPLUS contact/contactless encoder for MIFARE cards, when integrated with Fargo badge printers. Magstripe Encoder Unit Required only if encoding magstripe cards. Use a Model MSR206-7HL encoder. The previous model 712E HC encoder remains supported. Note: A magstripe encoder requires a client port to be set up in the "Install/System/Client Ports" screen of the SMS software. Card Scanner Scanshell 800 scanner, from Card Scanning Solutions. 64-bit Windows-compatible versions of the software are available from the manufacturer's web site. s for Peripherals and Other Equipment Signature Pad Transaction Team 1500. Use only for RS-232 connection. Mobinetix PenWare1500. Use only for RS-232 connection. Topaz Signature GEM pad model T-S751-B-R (serial connection signature pad). Topaz Signature GEM pad model T-S261-HSB-R (USB connection signature pad). Note: You need to set up an ini file for a Topaz USB signature pad. Please refer to the online help for the "Install/System/Client Ports" screen. Video Capture A video capture card is required at any PC where card holder pictures or signatures are to be captured for printing on a badge. If Windows XP is used, ensure that DirectX 9 is installed on the PC, and choose a card compatible with DirectX 9. If Windows 7 or Vista is used, choose a DirectX card compatible with that version of windows. The card should have at least 64MB of memory (128MB recommended for Windows 7 or Vista). Refer to Appendix D for details of card installation. A compatible Web camera may be used, or an AXIS camera using the AXIS DirectX driver. It is not possible to use cameras connected to a DVR or EN-9000 Series video server to capture card holder pictures and signatures. About Windows Time Service The Windows Time service is installed by Windows. Its purpose is to allow synchronization of date and time of computers running on a Windows network. It is a fully-compliant implementation of the Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP). It is recommended that an SNTP server is used to synchronize the time at all the SMS servers, clients and Symmetry EN-9000 Series video servers. Care should be taken to ensure that the frequency of the time changes will not disrupt system performance. The Windows Time service (W32time) starts automatically on computers that are joined as part of a domain. For computers belonging to a peer-to-peer workgroup, the Windows Time service synchronization settings must be manually set up in the computer's registry. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 platforms, configuration is necessary, as described in Microsoft Knowledge Base articles 216734, 314054 and 816042, "How to Configure an Authoritative Time Server in Windows 2000/2003/XP". Additionally, Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 223184 describes the registry entries for the service. For Windows 2008 Server, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042. 1-10 Security Management System Software Installation Manual: Introduction
