Cut (2) 4 x wof strips, recut into (32) 1/4 strips for fan handle blades. Cut (2) appliqué bowls. Fabric M 2-1/3 yd scenic geisha 2081-86 2081-36 Cut in this order to match fabric design, if desired: (2) 7-1/2 x wof strips for top and bottom borders, then cut (2) 7-1/2 x length of fabric strips for the side borders. Cut the remaining fabric into 7-1/2 x wof strips to produce the balance of the top and bottom borders for (2) 66-1/2 horizontal strips. Fussy cut (1) center appliqué vase. Fan Blades: Cut 56 fan blades from various prints for the fans. There are 7 blades in each of the 8 fans. Backing: 4 yd fabric J. Cut into 2 equal pieces and sew together selvedge to selvedge. Binding: 5/8 yd fabric K. Cut (8) 2-1/4 x wof strips and sew together end to end. Option: Beads, tassels and ribbons (for fan sticks) and to embellish fans and dragonfly appliqué.
Sewing the blocks 1. Ginger Jar blocks Appliqué two ginger jars to the center of two fabric A background squares. Sew a horizontal fabric C rectangle to the top and bottom of the blocks. Sew a fabric G square to each end of vertical fabric C strips, then sew one to the left side of a ginger jar block and one to the right side of a ginger jar block. 2. Center Vase block Appliqué the fussy cut fabric M vase to the center of a fabric A square. Sew a large horizontal fabric C strip to the top and bottom of the block. 3. Stack of Bowls block Appliqué 5 blocks in a tippy stack with the largest bowl at the bottom and the smallest bowl at the top onto a fabric A square. Make 2 blocks. Sew a horizontal fabric C strip to the top and bottom of each of the blocks. Sew a fabric G square to each end of 2 large vertical fabric C strips. Sew one to the left side of a bowls block and one to the right side of a bowls block. 4. Geisha blocks Sew a fabric K 5-1/2 strip to each side of the 4 geisha squares. Sew a fabric K 6-1/2 strip to top and bottom of the 4 geisha squares. Sew a 6-1/2 vertical fabric C strip to opposite sides of the geisha squares. Sew a fabric J square to each end of the horizontal fabric C strips. Sew these to the top and bottom of the 4 geisha squares. 5. Geisha block borders Sew a fabric B 4-1/2 square to one end of the fabric D and E 6-1/2 strips. Sew to opposite sides of the completed geisha blocks placing the colors as shown in the quilt photo. Sew a fabric B 8-1/2 strip to one end of each fabric D and E 10-1/2 strips. Sew these borders to the top and bottom of the geisha block matching colors as shown in the quilt photo. Make 4. 6. Appliqué the fan blades and 4 long fan base strips to opposite corners on the fabric B background to each of the blocks. Option: 3/8 ribbon can be used for the fan blades. Beads and tassels can be added as embellishments to fans and dragonfly appliqués. Quilt Assembly 7. Referring to the quilt diagram sew the blocks together in rows. There are 3 rows of 3 blocks each. Arrange the blocks in the rows as shown in the quilt photo. 8. Appliqué the five dragonflies as shown on the quilt diagram, overlapping the fabric A and fabric B seam joinings. Option: Black beads or ribbons can be used for the dragonfly bodies and the wings may be embellished with beads as desired. 9. Sew the fabric L vertical borders in place, then the fabric L horizontal borders. 10. Sew the fabric K vertical borders in place, then the fabric K horizontal borders. 11. Sew the fabric M vertical border strips to opposite sides of the quilt top and the fabric M horizontal border strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Finishing 12. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing. Baste, then quilt the layers together. 13. Sew the binding strips together end to end, fold over lengthwise and sew to quilt top. Turn binding to back of quilt and stitch in place.
