1 Mastering Basket Shaping Lecture will be held on Friday evening from 6-8 pm Est. time: 2 hours (This is a lecture with hand-outs & folks can bring their problem baskets) Level: All levels Cost: $25 including instruction & book Brief Description of Lecture: Do you have problems shaping baskets, whether they are straight up, flared, or get smaller? Venie will demonstrate some techniques that can be used to help with these problems, beginning at the base and working up. 53 page book on "Mastering Shaping and other helpful tips" included in class fee. Bring in some of your problem baskets for some hands-on help. Jazz it up even more with Seagrass weavers worked in several techniques. Add oak side handles and feet to complete this spacious double walled basket. Bejeweled Cat s Head Est. time: 6-8 hours Size: 8 diameter x 5 high Level: Intermediate/Advanced Weaving Level Cost: $62 including instruction & kit fees There s lots of techniques to learn here, from a great cat s head technique to chase weave on the sides to a balanced 2/2 twining. Spoke spacing is emphasized to shape the basket. Top is Bejeweled off with Japanese glass beads lashed on.

Inspired from an antique basket found by Beth at a garage sale, this basket is LOADED with techniques and learning experiences. Three marbled strips are cut, shaped, and used as randing as well as overlays using colors that complement the hand-painted wooden beads at the top. Weaves include balanced 2/2 twining and randing. Go right from the balanced 2/2 top weaves into the folded down spokes/beads no rim bands required! Shaped marbled strips (pre-cut) are used as overlays on the chase-woven sides as well as randed bands at top and bottom. Beth s Revisited Est. time: 9-6 (8 hrs) Size: 8.5 dia x 9 high Level: Intermediate Cost: $82 including instruction & kit fees Begin with a slotted hardwood base, 2/2 twining, then add French randing using marbled strips. The remainder of the side is woven in 3mm flat oval chase weave, overlaid with marbled strips. Add in a second french randing section (marbled strips again), more 2/2 twining, and finish off with flat oval rims. Shaping stressed! LOADS of techniques in this sturdy basket. Black Walnut Special Est. time: 6-8 hours Size: 12 dia x 6 high Level: All levels Cost: $82 including instruction & kit fees Weave this basket with a special twist: black walnut weavers under maple curls that twist in three directions between each set of spokes, creating a lacy blossom look. Begin with a solid black walnut base and combination of natural and black walnut overlay spokes. Then chase weave on the sides. Curls are actually woven in as the sides are woven horizontally rather than after rims are complete

Worked in tripled spokes and weavers, the base is woven in four rod waling (2/2 pattern), randed sides, and trac/braided rim. Several color choices available. Cherokee Memories begins with a square herring bone base woven in two colors. The two colors continue up the sides, which are woven in the round in space-dyed reed. Worked in both 3/3 and 1/3/5 twill patterns, Memories includes a broken twill border at top and bottom. Doubletake Est. time: 9-6 (8 hrs) Size: 10 dia x 7 high Level: Advanced Cost: $78 includes instruction and kit Double Take is full of techniques, from a bi-spoked base to doubled spokes, to doubled twining surrounding the marbled strip, to a doubled rim treatment. The top rim begins with a trac border with doubled spokes, with the spokes divided so the smoked reed forms a rolled border on the outside of the rim, and the natural spokes complete the inside rim. Materials include Seagrass, natural and smoked reed, with coordinating marbled strip. Push your limits: lots of shaping tips included in class!

Begin with a solid wooden slotted base, and a unique twining technique (2/2) holding the space-dyed spokes in place. Add marbled strips bordered by a trellis braid weave, with the braid weave creating a lovely arched trellis on the handle. Fall Frolic Est. time: 4 hours-6 hrs Size: 8 h x 12 l x 9 w Level: All levels Cost: $61 includes instruction & kit Worked in fall colored reed, marbled strips and plenty of seagrass, Frolic features a slotted hardwood base, 2/2 waling and plain and continuous weaves. But the fun doesn t stop there: create side handles from braided seagrass and add a seagrass decoration on the front of Frolic. The seagrass woven as weavers is worked continuously, passed upwards from row to row. Work maple in vertically curled rows to create the triangular flying geese pattern. End with a stained black walnut handle, and uniquely curled doubled lashed rim.

Both are woven the same the difference is in the shaping. Although the wrapped bases will come pre-started, what you do on the sides is totally up to you patterning possibilities are huge! Complete the rim in an easy wrap technique using choice of waxed linen or reed. This is fun, creative, and truly lovely to make. Not for the faint of heart, this beauty begins with a double slotted hardwood base hosting a straight sided interior basket with marbled strip and balanced 2/2 twining. ALL the spokes on the outside basket are marbled and pre-shaped. Just control the spoke shaping while chase weaving for a perfectly shaped basket. The combination trac/braid border on the sides above and below the marbled strip begins with a Josephine Knot made with added smoked round reed. Complete the rim with a trac/braid and scallop border. Handle is wrapped with smoked reed and a marbled strip. The pre-shaped spokes, inserted into a slotted oval hardwood base in the Nantucket fashion, ensure accurate shaping of the basket s sides. Weave sides in an undulating twill pattern, and complete the top with two oak side handles and waxed linen lashing. Stacked Rim Basket Est time: 8 hours Size: 10 dia x 8 high Level: Intermediate weaving level Cost: $65 includes instruction and kit Learn a great method to begin cat s head baskets with perky ears, then master the art of spoke spacing to control shaping on your basket. But the fun doesn t end there: experience t-twined / stacked rims from 2-7 levels high (weaver s choice). Complete the rimming with a unique pulled spoke technique; no cut and tuck here! Summertime Est time: 4-6 hours Size: 10 long x 7 high x 7 ½ wide Level: Intermediate/Advanced Level Cost: $75 including instruction and kit Last of the Four Seasons series, the sides of Summertime feature undulating marbled weavers bordered by 4-rod waling done in a 2/2 pattern. The sides incorporate twining and plain weave. The doubled spokes feature ¼ colorful overlays (which become the rim). The unique rim is fun to make: no cut and tuck here, but rather features a modified ti-twining using the overlay spokes. Add handmade flowers and curl leaves as embellishments to complete the Summertime look.

Spokes are a combination of dyed reed and marbled strips cut into undulating forms. The marbled rim bands are topped with a unique beaded finish, lashed on with waxed linen in a modified blanket stitch.
