Direct Dyes The Direct Dyes are suitable for semi-permanent formulations; this makes them ideal for use by consumers who are not ready to commit to a permanent colour. These hair dyes are typically materials of low molecular weight, which are small enough to infuse into the hair shaft. Subsequent shampooing of the hair after application causes the hair to swell, opening the cuticle and allowing the colour to escape. Colour results therefore typically last 6-8 washes. Direct Dyes are versatile in their use. They can be used for tone on tone applications, to subtly enhance the hair s natural colour, or to blend/cover up to 30% grey. Optimum conditions for use are weak alkaline, however they can be used under weak acidic conditions if the formulation requires it. than the hair s original shade, as the colouring process does not involve any bleaching of the hair s natural pigment. Direct Dyes are coloured molecules and unlike oxidative dyes, there is no chemical reaction involved in their use. No mixing of separate components is required and as such colour matching, with our help and guidance, is relatively simple. Direct Dyes can also be used in conjunction with Basic Dyes and Oxidative Dyes to produce a vibrant colour palette and enable formulators to work across a wider range of ph conditions. At Vivimed, we are constantly expanding our portfolio of formulation guides to offer you the opportunity to be first to the market with new shades. These colourants are usually applied without peroxide or ammonia and therefore cannot produce a colour lighter Shade Trade Name INCI Name CAS Number Blue 15 HC Blue 15 74578-10-2 Blue 12 HC Blue 12 32885-85-9 Blue 2 HC Blue 2 33229-34-4 Violet 14D N,N-Bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-nitro- 84041-77-0 p-phenylenediamine 2NPPD 2-Nitro-p-phenylenediamine 5307-14-2 Red 3 HC Red 3 2871-01-4 Red 13 HC Red 13 94158-13-1 Red BN 4-Hydroxypropylamino-3-nitrophenol 92952-81-3 NHEAP 3-Nitro-p-hydroxyethylaminophenol 65235-31-6 4A3NP 4-Amino-3-nitrophenol 610-81-1 4NOPD 4-Nitro-o-phenylenediamine 99-56-9 HNT Hydroxyethyl-2-nitro-p-toluidine 100418-33-5 Yellow 2 HC Yellow 2 4926-55-0 For advice on any patent and regulatory restrictions in specific countries contact the Vivimed Sales Team

Basic Dyes The Basic Dyes are suitable for temporary and semi-permanent applications, in particular shampoo and conditioner products, due to their ability to colour hair in a short contact time. Basic dyes are too large to penetrate the cuticle and therefore coat the surface of the hair to produce an effect lasting between 1-8 washes. Due to their cationic nature, basic dyes show excellent affinity for hair but are not readily compatible with anionic surfactants or alkaline ph. The Vivimed team can offer advice on how to overcome these formulation constraints. These products are applied without ammonia or peroxide and therefore cannot produce results lighter than the original hair colour. They are used primarily to add subtle colour nuances to enhance hair colour, especially when used as a refresher between applications of permanent colour, for single event colours, or for masking yellowing grey hair. Applied typically in shampoo or conditioner products, the dye deposits a small amount of colour onto the hair shaft, giving a slight violet tint to neutralise the yellow. Before After Always looking to innovate, Vivimed has developed formulations which combine the Basic Dyes and Direct Dyes to successfully deliver exceptional colour coverage on as much as 90% grey hair.

Hair Dyes Oxidation Dyes Oxidation Dyes are suitable for permanent and demi-permanent hair colourants. Oxidation dyes are low molecular weight materials that pass through the cuticle into the hair shaft where they oxidise and combine to generate a larger coloured molecule, which remains inside the hair structure. Oxidation dyes fall into two categories, primary intermediates (oxidation bases) and secondary intermediates (couplers). To generate colour, at least one of each type must be combined in the correct ratio with a suitable oxidant under alkaline conditions. The application conditions determine the durability of the colour result. A permanent colour capable of lightening the hair s natural pigmentation will typically contain ammonia and will be used with hydrogen peroxide. A softer alkali may be used with a lower strength hydrogen peroxide, which can still provide a long lasting result but is unable to produce a colour lighter than the original hair colour. Due to their ability to cover grey and give long lasting results, oxidation dyes are the most popular class of hair colourant. They provide the largest range of shades to suit many markets, including fashion, colour enhancement and grey coverage. As the colour guide opposite shows, our full range of hair dyes, together with our extensive colour matching and formulation experience, will allow you to develop shades to meet the ever-changing desires of your customers.
