A Native American Unit *All about the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo Tribes

What s Included Included in this unit you will find: A mini-book with information about each tribe, critical thinking questions about the readings, and a reading response section A sorting activity A flipbook activity for each tribe A vocabulary activity A research paper template and writing paper This is a great supplemental unit for social studies or a research topic

All About Native Americans The Powhatan Indians The Powhatans were part of a group called the Eastern Woodland Indians The Eastern Woodland Indians lived in Virginia and other areas of the Mid-Atlantic Woodlands are regions with lots of trees The Powhatans used the bark and wood from the trees to build canoes and houses Their houses were called longhouses A book about the Powhatan Indians, Lakota Indians, and Pueblo Indian Tribes Powhatan women were in charge of doing the farming They grew corn, beans, and squash These three crops are known as the three sisters because they are grown together Name Powhatan men found food by hunting and fishing Powhatan men hunted for food and used the canoes made from wood and bark to fish

The Powhatan men used every bit of the animals they hunted They ate the meat and used the bones to make tools They used the skins from deer, bear, and other animals to make clothing They even used a part of the muscle to make strings for their bows! 1 List 3 ways the Powhatan Indians used the animals they hunted 1 2 3 2 What are the three sisters? Why are they called that? The three sisters are They are called that because 3 Powhatan Indians traveled by The Lakota Indians The Lakota were part of a group called the Plains Indians Plains are flat areas with very few hills or trees There is usually a lot of grass in the Plains Lakota Indians lived a very different life from the Powhatan Indians Powhatan Indians lived in one place and farmed Lakota Indians were nomads who moved a lot They survived by hunting buffalo and other animals Like the Powhatans, the Lakota did not waste any part of the buffalo They used the meat for food, the skin to make clothes, and the bones to make tools They even used the skin to make their homes, called teepees The teepees were easy to take apart and carry when they moved

Lakota Indians were very good at riding horses They were able to travel on horseback and use the horses to herd the buffalo Lakota Indians also traveled by walking One famous Lakota Indian is Sacagawea She is honored on the $1 gold-colored coin for helping the explorers Lewis and Clark 1 Why do you think that Lakota Indians didn t use canoes or fish like Powhatan Indians? 2 Why didn t the Lakota Indians farm? They didn t farm because 3 Lakota Indians traveled by The Pueblo Indians The Pueblo were part of a group called the Southwest Indians The Southwest is dry land with plants such as cactus It doesn t rain very often in the Southwest The Pueblo Indians lived in homes called pueblos They were made out of adobe, which is clay that has been hardened by the sun They also used stones and logs Pueblos had many levels and the Indians used ladders to climb them Like the Powhatan Indians, the Pueblos grew many crops The main crop they grew was corn They also grew beans, squash, and cotton They used the cotton to make clothes

Pueblo Indians walked everywhere they went There was very little water and no animals to ride Pueblo men were responsible for all the farming Pueblo women cooked the food, wove baskets and took care of children Pueblo children did not go to school They learned how to work from their parents Children started helping their parents when they were 5 years old 1 What did Pueblo Indians make their homes out of? 2 How else besides farming could Pueblo Indians have gotten food? They could have 3 Pueblo Indians traveled by Reading Response Now that you have read all about the tribes, think about what you have learned If you were a Native American child, which tribe do you think you would have liked to be in? Why did you choose that one? _

Native American Flip Books The following templates make flip books The students should fold the paper in half on the line Then they cut on the lines between each category Make sure they ONLY CUT the TOP paper when folded Otherwise it will be cut right in half instead of having a flap You can use this as you introduce information to have the students keep notes about each tribe I have my students write the information on one half of the flap and draw a picture to go with it on the other half
