All About Native Americans The Powhatan Indians The Powhatans were part of a group called the Eastern Woodland Indians The Eastern Woodland Indians lived in Virginia and other areas of the Mid-Atlantic Woodlands are regions with lots of trees The Powhatans used the bark and wood from the trees to build canoes and houses Their houses were called longhouses A book about the Powhatan Indians, Lakota Indians, and Pueblo Indian Tribes Powhatan women were in charge of doing the farming They grew corn, beans, and squash These three crops are known as the three sisters because they are grown together Name Powhatan men found food by hunting and fishing Powhatan men hunted for food and used the canoes made from wood and bark to fish

The three sisters are They are called that because 3 Powhatan Indians traveled by The Lakota Indians The Lakota were part of a group called the Plains Indians Plains are flat areas with very few hills or trees There is usually a lot of grass in the Plains Lakota Indians lived a very different life from the Powhatan Indians Powhatan Indians lived in one place and farmed Lakota Indians were nomads who moved a lot They survived by hunting buffalo and other animals Like the Powhatans, the Lakota did not waste any part of the buffalo They used the meat for food, the skin to make clothes, and the bones to make tools They even used the skin to make their homes, called teepees The teepees were easy to take apart and carry when they moved
Lakota Indians were very good at riding horses They were able to travel on horseback and use the horses to herd the buffalo Lakota Indians also traveled by walking One famous Lakota Indian is Sacagawea She is honored on the $1 gold-colored coin for helping the explorers Lewis and Clark 1 Why do you think that Lakota Indians didn t use canoes or fish like Powhatan Indians? 2 Why didn t the Lakota Indians farm? They didn t farm because 3 Lakota Indians traveled by The Pueblo Indians The Pueblo were part of a group called the Southwest Indians The Southwest is dry land with plants such as cactus It doesn t rain very often in the Southwest The Pueblo Indians lived in homes called pueblos They were made out of adobe, which is clay that has been hardened by the sun They also used stones and logs Pueblos had many levels and the Indians used ladders to climb them Like the Powhatan Indians, the Pueblos grew many crops The main crop they grew was corn They also grew beans, squash, and cotton They used the cotton to make clothes
Pueblo Indians walked everywhere they went There was very little water and no animals to ride Pueblo men were responsible for all the farming Pueblo women cooked the food, wove baskets and took care of children Pueblo children did not go to school They learned how to work from their parents Children started helping their parents when they were 5 years old 1 What did Pueblo Indians make their homes out of? 2 How else besides farming could Pueblo Indians have gotten food?
