The Sharing Economy / The Collaborative Economy An economic model where creation, ownership and access are shared between people and corporations The people formerly called consumers are now getting what they need from each other, rather than from traditional institutions. Instead of buying new things, people are sharing products with each other in an emerging societal shift called the Sharing Economy.

15 Understanding Cloud Computing - Definition Cloud Computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the internet). Five Essential Characteristics (per National Institute of Standards & Technology) 1. On-demand self-service a consumer can request & receive computing capabilities at any time without requiring human interaction 2. Broad network access - capabilities are available over the network from a variety of user devices (mobile phones, tablets, laptops and workstations) 3. Resource pooling the provider s computing resources are pooled to serve multiple customers using a multi-tenant model (similar to multiple apartments in a single apartment building) 4. Rapid elasticity capabilities can be elastically provisioned and released based upon customer demand. To the customer, the capabilities available appear to be unlimited. 5. Measured service automatically control and optimize resources by metering some appropriate measurement such as number of users, storage used, bandwidth consumed or computing cycles used.

16 Understanding Cloud Computing 3 Service Models The 3 Cloud Service Models IaaS Infrastructure as a Service (servers, disk space, networking) PaaS Platform as a Service (a working platform to let you build applications) SaaS Software as a Service (a working software system that you can use & customize and is used by others)

Understanding Cloud Computing A BIG marketplace 18

19 Understanding Cloud Computing Examples Sample Cloud Computing Solution videos: IaaS example: Amazon Web Services (aws) http://aws.amazon.com/what-is-cloud-computing/ PaaS example: Force.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bjrvlmwhio&index=3&list=pl9e9af3a9b2e62798 SaaS example: Salesforce.com Service Cloud demo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwkfv9x1yhu

Why organizations are moving to the Cloud? Better, Faster, Cheaper 20

21 Why organizations are moving to the Cloud? Better, Faster, Cheaper Cloud solutions are faster because: No time spent on building/testing systems infrastructure (it already exists) Less programming means less testing ( configure, don t code ) An ecosystem of applications (apps) that can be quickly put together (eg, Apple s AppStore)

Why organizations are moving to the Cloud? Better, Faster, Cheaper 22 Servers & Database example: Cloud option (Amazon) saves ~70-80% vs On-premise

23 Trends in IT Services Business needs & expectations are changing Faster pace of change Must be more nimble & responsive to customer needs IT professionals need BOTH business skills & technology skills Technology is increasingly driving innovation Location may not matter, but time of day does Pervasive use of online collaboration tools (WebEx, GoToMeeting, Skype, JoinMe, Facetime, Google Hangouts) Broadband is everywhere (mobile & fixed, home & work) Re-shoring of IT Services Issues with offshore IT slow, time zones, communications, rising labor rates Domestic jobs focus & pressure on H1B visas Very high costs of IT services & quality of life issues in major US markets (San Francisco, New York, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago) Rise of rural IT sourcing high quality of service at reasonable prices

24 Implications for Florida s Economic Development We are well positioned.the trends favor us Key Strengths High quality of life Low cost of living Strong university system developing technology skills Good collaboration programs FL High Tech Corridor Gateway to growing South American markets bi-lingual Reliable & affordable power & telecom infrastructure Recommended messages to target companies: Florida as a re-shoring IT destination Florida lifestyle as an IT recruitment & retention tool (reduce attrition) Florida technology skilled workforce is growing, rapidly More technology talent is moving to Florida seeking a better lifestyle ( IT people can work anywhere with today s collaboration tools)
