Why Private Cloud? O P E R A T I O N S V I E W Nenad BUNCIC EPFL, SI-EXHEB 1
What Exactly Is Cloud? Cloud technology definition, as per National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST SP ), U.S. Department of Commerce: Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. 2
Cloud: Essential Characteristics (5) 5 essential characteristics of cloud computing: 1. on-demand self-service a customer can easily manage own services 2. network access the cloud services are accessible via normal networking technologies 3. resource pooling the services that are running in a datacenter are using a shared infrastructure with multiple other customers 4. rapid elasticity or expansion the capacity of the cloud services can be easily adjusted to the demand, and services can be scaled up and down as demand changes 5. measured service the capacity of the cloud services are measured and its usage is reported on a regular basis 3
Cloud: Service Models (3) 3 service models: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) server is running in the datacenter managed by the customer everything running on this server is the customer s responsibility (operating system, applications, data) Platform as a Service (PaaS) server is running in the datacenter and is managed by the service provider customer is managing the applications and the data Software as a Service (SaaS) all software is running in the datacenter and all is managed by the service provider 4
Cloud: Deployment Models (2) 5
Cloud: Why Private? Defining feature that directly impacts cloud delivery strategy: control of data security privacy data sovereignty Agility, elasticity, cost, speed of deployment - important attributes of a cloud deployment but none of these attributes have a higher priority than control of data 6
Private Cloud: Benefits Higher security and privacy public clouds services: can implement a certain level of security private clouds: can ensure operational security More control ability to configure and manage resources inline with the needs Cost and energy efficiency minimise the investment into unused capacity Improved reliability even where resources (servers, networks etc.) are hosted internally, the creation of virtualised operating environments means that the infrastructure is more resilient to individual failures across the physical infrastructure Cloud bursting manage spikes in demand 7
Private Cloud: Operational Benefits (1) Cost reduction driven by standardisation and automation of services and resources: reduction in operational costs free personnel to focus more on services than on activities with little or no added value (e.g allocating disk space or installing OS) Enhancing service Operational Efficiency virtualised storage, network, and compute resources 8
Private Cloud: Operational Benefits (2) Operational Flexibility on-demand self-service resource pooling measured service Role Separation end users are responsible for their own computing resource needs rather than the Operations the Operations are responsible for the overall infrastructure but no longer for the individual resources Operational Scalability end users create their own resources, pay for the usage and destroy resources when no longer needed 9
Private Cloud vs. Virtualization 10
Summary Cloud computing is not a promise but a reality - if we do not design an adoption strategy, we ll miss the bus Private Cloud Benefits tremendous amount of flexibility (both technically and financially) agility, elasticity, speed of deployment role separation and operational scalability control of data (security, privacy, data sovereignty) 11
