Covers grammar, spelling, diction, punctuation, capitalization, and other usage problems. INTRODUCTION This is a Distance Education course designed specifically for those students whose learning styles are best served by providing instructional opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting. AST 107 Editing/Proofreading Skills will help the student to develop error-free business documents and communications within the business office. B. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Define proofreading and editing. 2. Describe four approaches to proofreading documents. 3. Proofread names, addresses, telephone numbers, and other numbers. 4. Use appropriate revision symbols to correct misstrokes, repetitions, omissions, transpositions, and spacing errors. 5. Apply basic spelling rules to spell words correctly. 6. Use a dictionary, wordbook, reference manual, spell checker, and grammar checker to verify spelling and to select the appropriate word. 7. Apply basic capitalization rules when proofreading. 8. Detect and correct capitalization errors that frequently occur in business writing. 9. Detect and correct capitalization errors in memo and letter formats. 10. Apply rules for forming plurals and possessives and dividing words when proofreading. 11. Apply rules for using commas to separate and set off terms. 12. Detect and correct errors in common usage within parts of a letter. 13. Locate, mark, and correct errors in periods, colons, exclamation points, and dashes. 14. Locate, mark, and correct errors in parentheses, hyphens, and semicolons. 15. Locate, mark, and correct errors in question marks, quotation marks, and underscores. 16. Recognize and correct errors in subject-verb agreement. 17. Recognize and correct errors in pronoun-antecedent agreement. 18. Recognize complete sentences. 19. Find and correct sentence fragments. 20. Find and correct run-on sentences and comma splices. 21. Recognize and correct errors in parallel structure. 22. Recognize and correct errors in dangling and misplaced modifiers. 23. Apply the basic rules for number style. 24. Proofread to find errors in number style. 25. Describe the standard and optional parts of memos and letters. 26. Recognize and explain the differences among five letter formats; block, modified-block, modified-block with indented paragraphs, simplified, and personal-business style. 27. Use standard and open punctuation styles correctly in letters. 28. Proofread tables, spreadsheets, and databases to ensure accuracy. New River Community College (F12) Page 2

29. Proofread specialized forms such as invoices and purchase orders to ensure accuracy. 30. Recognize and correct four types of inconsistencies frequently found in business documents. 31. Edit to use simple words and proper English. 32. Edit to eliminate trite language and minimize the use of the passive voice. 33. Edit to avoid wordiness, redundancy, overused words, and too many phrases and clauses. 34. Edit to make sure all details are included. 35. Edit documents to reflect the you-attitude. 36. Edit documents to eliminate biased language and stereotypes. 37. Explain voice-recognition technology. C. COURSE CONTENT In AST 107, the student will complete the following: Chapters 1-15 in the text plus all checkup exercises and application exercises CD-ROM applications for 15 chapters Chapter tests on Chapters 1-15 Final exam D. GRADING/EVALUATION The final grade for the course will be determined as follows: Each CD-ROM exercise will be graded according to the following scale: 0 errors A 1 error B 2 errors C 3 errors D 4 or more errors F Fifteen tests will be completed. A test will be given after each chapter. Final Exam The following grading scale will be used to determine the final grade for the student: 91-100 A 81-90 B 71-80 C 61-70 D 60 or below F New River Community College (F12) Page 3

In order to receive a final grade in AST 107, the student must complete all assigned assessments. If all work is not completed, a grade of F will be given unless there are mitigating circumstances to warrant an I (incomplete) grade. After all work is completed, the AST 107 student will receive a grade of A, B, C, D, or F, which will be based on the following components of the course: Introductory Letter CD-ROM Applications Chapter Tests Final Exam 5% of grade 20% of grade 35% of grade 40% of grade E. WITHDRAWAL POLICY Student Initiated Withdrawal Policy A student may drop or withdraw from a class without academic penalty during the first sixty percent (60%) of a session. For purposes of enrollment reporting, the following procedures apply: a. If a student withdraws from a class prior to the termination of the add/drop period for the session, the student will be removed from the class roll and no grade will be awarded. b. After the add/drop period, but prior to completion of sixty percent (60%) of a session, a student who withdraws or is withdrawn from a course will be assigned a grade of "W." A grade of W implies that the student was making satisfactory progress in the class at the time of withdrawal, that the withdrawal was officially made before the deadline published in the college calendar, or that the student was administratively transferred to a different program. c. After that time, if a student withdraws from a class, a grade of "F" will be assigned. Exceptions to this policy may be made under documented mitigating circumstances if the student was passing the course at the last date of attendance. A retroactive grade of W may be awarded only if the student would have been eligible under the previously stated policy to receive a W on the last date of class attendance. The last date of attendance for a distance education course will be the last date that work was submitted. Late withdrawal appeals will be revised and a decision made by the Coordinator of Student Services. No-Show Policy A student must either attend face-to-face courses or demonstrate participation in distance learning courses by the last date to drop for a refund. A student who does not meet this deadline will be reported to the Admissions and Records Office and will be withdrawn as a noshow student. No refund will be applicable, and the student will not be allowed to attend/participate in the class or submit assignments. Failure to attend or participate in a course will adversely impact a student s financial aid award. New River Community College (F12) Page 4

Instructor Initiated Withdrawal Students who have not attended class or picked up/accessed distance learning materials by the last day to drop the class and receive a refund must be withdrawn by the instructor during the following week. No refund will be applicable. Students who fail to submit work by the deadlines will be withdrawn after they have missed two assignment deadlines. Students who are withdrawn in this manner after the withdrawal date set each semester receive a grade of F in the course. F. CHEATING/PLAGIARISM POLICY A grade of zero will be awarded to any writing assignments or tests that show cheating or plagiarism. To plagiarize is To use and pass off as one s own the ideas or writings of another. (Definition adapted from the American Heritage Dictionary.) Remember that plagiarism includes lifting words or ideas from Internet sites, as well as copying from print sources. G.
