When I don`t count with my fingers I only use my brain

Background My own interest for mathematics and working with pupils who has difficulties with mathematics Numicon our first meet Statped - Forum for matematikkmestring (Sørlandets kompetansesenter)

My study How can children in second grade develop their mathematic strategies in addition by using Numicon? Can exploratory learning methods, such as Numicon, help children to develop their abilities in mathematics?

Numicon Numicon is a curriculum proof, multi-sensory approach, built on a proven pedagogy that raises achievement across all ability levels (Numicon) Developed in England at Oxford University Suitable for differentiated teaching strategies(tpo)

Numicon The Numicon programme uses the pupils ability to: Learn by doing Learn by looking and observing Learn through their ability to see and make patterns Possibility to give an receive instructions Make way for conversation and interactions between the pupils and between the teacher and the pupils

Numicon Develops fluency by using a visual, practical base to develop conceptual understanding and fluent recall. Helps pupils to reason mathematically through the use of concrete objects and spoken language to explain and justify. Develops pupils into confident problem-solvers (Numicon).

Numicon The Numicon programme builds a deep understanding of number and number relationships, developing children's fluency, reasoning and problem-solving (Numicon)

The Numicon kit

The Numicon intervention programme It is a program that has been developed for pupils who needs individual differentiated teaching My study: An intervention programme adapted to my pupils.

My group of pupils Two girls and three boys in second grade Difficulties with mathematics Two of them in need of facilitated learning in several subjects Using a separate room for the observations and the intervention programme The Numicon room

What did I want to find out and how? I wanted to see if there was tendencies to improvement using Numicon Would the pupils develop their strategies in mathematics? Backup strategies to retrieval strategies? Backup children counts to find the answer Retrieval children know the answer right away

How to measure this: Snorre Ostads materials for observation of strategies Pre - observation of the pupils Working with the Numicon intervention programme to three times a week for four weeks Post - observation of the pupils

My results In my results I compared both observations Example: It was a decline in minimumsvarianter from 24% to 3% It was an increase in vet svaret from 31% to 42%

Comparison of the first and second observation 31 % 18 % Første strategiobservasjon Telle alt og forfra igjen 0 % Telle alt 1 % 1 % Telle videre 7 % 12 % Minimumsvarianter Tegnevarianter 0 % 5 % 1 % 24 % Tellepunkter i tallsymbol Andre tellevarianter Verbal telling Vet svaret 1 % 3 % 42 % 0 % Andre strategiobservasjon 0 % 2 % 3 % 0 % 16 % 23 % 10 % Telle alt og forfra igjen Telle alt Telle videre Minimumsvarianter Tegnevarianter Tellepunkter i tallsymbol Andre tellevarianter Verbal telling Vet svaret Avledet variant 1 Avledet variant 1 Avledet variant 2 Avledet variant 2

Conclusion The pupils showed signs of increase from low levels in backup strategies to higher levels in retrieval strategies It seemed to be an improvement of understanding in mathematics for these pupils

Conclusion Factors that might influence on the result: My relations to the pupils My knowledge to the observations Numicon is one of the methods we can use to: Build childrens understanding for numbers and number relationship Do the math concrete Give pupils the opportunity to solve mathematical problems

What can we do? Try a different approach when the pupils dont learn mathematics in the way we are teaching them variate the learning methods Meet pupils on their level and work together with them to reach a new potential Make a mathematical environment in the classroom let the numbers be a natural part of the classroom

We have to give pupils the opportunity to feel mathematical mastery instead of mathematical failure What about the pupils that seems to have a good understandig in mathematics? Numicon was diffcult Thinking outside the books

Experiences by Statped Numicon: Prevent mathematical difficulties Used in a preventive perspective Good results in Developing pupils number sense Differentiated teaching strategies Preventive use for pupils with special needs or learning difficulties
