PROCEDURE PR.663.CUR TITLE: ELEMENTARY TIME ALLOCATION MODEL Date Issued: 12 February 8 Date Revised: 11 May 2010 Authorization: Senior Staff: 12 February 8 1.0 OBJECTIVE To provide a time allocation model to support the organization of school and classroom timetables in the elementary panel. 2.0 DEFINITIONS In this procedure, 2.1 Time Allocation Model refers to: a) the amount of instructional time allocated per subject; b) the language of instruction for each subject. 2.2 October Documentation refers to information pertaining to school operations that is submitted to a Superintendent of Instruction on an annual basis. This information typically includes such things as: a) annual database; b) safety issues; c) frequently requested information; d) policies and procedures to review with all staff; and, e) program information. 3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES 3.1 Schools principals and their staff will be responsible for ensuring that their school time tables are organized according to the time allocation model outlined in Attachment 1. - 1 - PR.663.CUR
3.2 Superintendents of Instruction will be responsible for ensuring that schools are adhering to the time allocation model. 3.3 The Superintendent of Curriculum will be responsible for ensuring that the time allocation model reflects guidelines established in Ministry documents, as appropriate. 4.0 PROCEDURES 4.1 The principal, in consultation with their staff, will develop a school timetable that reflects the time allocation model. 4.2 The principal will collect individual classroom timetables from staff in September and ensure that they are aligned with the time allocation model. During the Literacy Block it is crucial to integrate literacy instruction into cross curricular areas using a variety of genres. Schedules should reflect a literacy block of 120 in primary and in Junior and Intermediate. An example of cross-curricular planning in the literacy block would be the instruction of procedural writing, or strategic reading strategies in Science & Technology. In Immersion Classes, the Language portion of the Literacy Block is divided as per the allocation model between and. Including Science & Technology and Social Studies in the portion of the literacy block provides the opportunity for focusing on language literacy development through integration. Core teachers in the Program, and to Immersion teachers in the Immersion Program, should plan collaboratively with their classroom teaching partners to ensure that students are provided the opportunities to reach all expectations of the Language Curriculum while respecting that it is not always necessary to teach the same expectation in both languages. Science and Social Studies, at the Intermediate level, should also be integrated with Language. When different teachers teach the specific subjects, collaborative planning should occur to ensure that students are provided the opportunities to reach all expectations of the Language Curriculum while respecting that it is not always necessary to teach the same expectation in all subject areas. The flex time identified in the Time Allocation Model may be used to add additional instructional time to subject areas, such as the Arts, Science & Technology, or others as deemed appropriate at the school level. PARTIAL ROTARY AT INTERMEDIATE Commencing in September 2010 all schools in the OCDSB with students in grades 7 and 8 will be organized based on a partial rotary model The literacy block will be taught by one teacher in one daily block of (consecutive) of instructional time. The may be scheduled around a natural break (recess, nutrition break lunch). The district direction is revised to include two options in and four options in Immersion. This change reflects feedback received from teachers and principals regarding the challenges of implementation and workload for Immersion teachers due to language arts being divided between and instruction. The language of instruction will be aligned with provincial assessments, i.e., language of instruction for mathematics. In a Immersion program, must be the language of instruction for a minimum of 50 per cent of the total instructional time at every grade level of the program.
