WesÕ best... Having grown trees my entire life people often ask what I consider to be the best or even my favourite trees. It s a tough question and I change my mind all the time, but these trees always stand out for their consistent quality and never fail attributes. 1. Lipstick Tree Acer rubrum October Glory All the Lipstick Trees are amazing and I especially adore October Glory. Its magnificent form, straight-as-a-die trunk and knock-out autumn reds, make it a very special tree. 6. Acer palmatum Sango Kaku Such a soft dreamy Japanese maple, Sango Kaku loves to show off with stunning autumn tones and amazing coral bark. Its new wood is bright red which is a real feature against fresh green leaves in spring. 2. Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy Such an enchanting little tree. Forest Pansy is one of my favourite purple foliage trees with its huge heart-shaped leaves and informal habit, it always leaves me feeling cosy and happy. 7. Cercis chinensis Avondale Another Cercis I just love. Avondale is a small multi-stemmed tree that features large brightgreen heart-shaped leaves that stack along the branches. 3. Carpinus betulus Fastigiata I love this tree! It s got great form and dense foliage but isn t too large. With an upright habit it won t need much maintenance and it always looks healthy and happy. 8. Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer The queen of ornamental pears, Chanticleer continues to impress me with its never-say-die attitude. Chanticleer can handle a huge variety of conditions and has a gorgeous formal shape that is best planted in a row or multiples. 4. Betula utilis var. jaquemontii Definitely one of the best white-trunk birch available in Australia today. Its stark white trunk is offset by the soft elegant foliage in summer, and while bare in winter makes a statement by itself. 9. Acer platanoides Crimson Sentry A stunning deep purple foliaged maple that is very upright in habit. I love using this tree for bringing mood and depth into a garden. Works beautifully as a screening tree or as a backdrop to highlight contrasting varieties. 5. Zelkova serrata Green Vase I admire the very strict vase shape of this tree it makes it so easy for street and avenue planting with limbs growing upwards above vehicle level. It works extremely well planted along a driveway. 10. Acer truncatum x A. platanoides Warrenred Pacific Sunset A A gorgeous medium-sized autumn tree that really hasn t had enough recognition. With a beautiful shape and fast growing attributes Pacific Sunset is ideal for planting in street, residential and urban areas. Good resistance to heat.
