Spotlight Elena Chong Joined 2012 MChem Chemistry at University of Oxford Since joining Strategy&, I ve been building up my knowledge and experience across a range of sectors, including Financial Services, Energy, and Health. Last year, after working closely with the Energy, Chemicals and Utilities team for some time, I took the opportunity to go on a secondment to an independent Upstream Oil and Gas company for six months. I put all the consulting skills I had learned to the test, and was responsible for designing and building a workforce planning model for the organisation that took into account supply and demand of resources by capability and location. My role included leading bi-weekly meetings with Department Heads to share findings and presenting the results to the Executive Committee. As a result of the work done on my secondment, the client now has staff dedicated to workforce planning and incorporates this into their annual business planning process. Since the very beginning, what struck me the most about Strategy& was how friendly and welcoming people were. Before I had even started, I had offers to show me around the office, join social events, and help with any questions I had. The people are definitely the differentiating factor for the firm. There are also many opportunities available to get involved in wider office activities. Through the Strategy& support for The Access Project charitable scheme, I volunteer as a chemistry tutor for a student at a local school every Friday, and have attended the Strategy& Soccer Cup, which is hosted at one of our European offices each year. The firm has also awarded me sponsorship to pursue an MBA, so I m currently applying to top US business schools for Autumn 2015. 8

Marketing strategy for a travel company. A travel company approached us to review their marketing strategy to help them reduce spend and improve effectiveness. We began by carrying out detailed quantitative analysis on their marketing expenditure. They had taken a fairly traditional approach to marketing, using mainly TV, press, and brochures. There were a lot of issues stemming from the growing importance of digital marketing channels. We looked at the overall effectiveness of their marketing techniques in generating traffic through to point of sale, and the impact this had on sales and profit. Our approach and varied skills enabled us both to quantify the impact of existing campaigns, and to identify quite different options for the marketing strategy and organisation in the future. In-depth analysis revealed that a particular marketing campaign had little impact on profitable bookings, so we recommended a swift end to it. The savings could be immediately reinvested in more modern and electronicbased marketing, and we identified what was required to benefit from this. This influenced our next step to understand how the company communicated with customers throughout the customer journey. We recommended a more customercentric approach that would help create sales and revenue, and also make better use of the brand, drive higher levels of loyalty, and ensure an improved customer journey. In all, we advised changes to everything from website functionality and the travel advice available, to an after care service. The client has been extremely happy with our assessments and has commended us for significantly broadening our scope and truly going above and beyond to deliver impact. 9

Spotlight Avinash Rao Joined 2013 BSc Economics at London School of Economics After studying Economics at university, I wanted to find a job that would allow me to sample a variety of different industries, keep me intellectually stimulated and develop my skills quickly. Strategy consulting has allowed me to do just that I m a year in and it s been a great start. I really enjoy the mix of work about half of what I do is solving tough strategic problems for CEOs and other business leaders, and the other half has been advising top Private Equity houses on their M&A and growing their portfolio businesses. Since I joined, I have found my colleagues to be really approachable and sociable. They are always open to questions and keen to offer on-the-job advice, which has helped me transition quickly and easily from student life. In the time I have been here, I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects across both corporate and M&A strategy, from finding potential new markets for a leading construction company to designing the optimal business model for a mobility aids retailer. One that stands out for me involved supporting a private equity firm in identifying and assessing growth opportunities for a business they were considering investing in. I was quite surprised with the level of responsibility given to me ranging from assessing the target company s competitive advantages to presenting directly to senior executives at the Private Equity firm. Working on this project encouraged me to challenge myself, and helped me develop both my soft and technical skills. 10

M&A strategy on the sale of a major cinema chain. When a large cinema chain was put up for sale, we were hired to advise potential bidders. The purpose of our work was to educate potential buyers on the business and its markets, while giving an independent view on the business performance. To make sure interested parties understood exactly what this company was about, we reviewed the market and competitive environment, covering issues such as the benefits and limitations of 3D films and cinema screens. We worked closely with the client s senior management to understand their strategy in areas such as 3D, alternative content and concessions, and carried out our own proprietary research to assess the strategy. The client hired us because of our extensive experience in the cinema sector and our knowledge of the business. We re known for being analytically rigorous, and the company knew using us would ensure the work was credible. We covered all the issues authoritatively and established credibility with the potential buyers. We had great feedback from the bidders on our report and sector knowledge. The company was then sold to private equity investors who we later advised on how to increase the performance of the cinema chain and increase its value. 11

Spotlight Tanya Bencheva Joined 2012 BSc International Management at University of Warwick with exchange year at Cornell University After studying business, consulting seemed a natural career choice for me. I ve particularly enjoyed learning on-the-job which has helped me build a broad range of skills. In fact, when I look back over the two short years I ve been here, it s incredible how much I ve learnt, and the variety of experiences I ve had so far. These include helping two global telecom operators with their international expansion strategy and developing a differentiation strategy for a multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical company. In another project I had the opportunity to present to the board, which was unlike anything I had ever done before. I ve had quite a few opportunities to work abroad too. So far I ve had projects that have taken me to Qatar, Canada, Germany, and France. Although we work hard, interests outside of the office are appreciated and respected. Despite a busy schedule and international travel, I still manage to do Ballroom & Latin dance at least twice a week and have even started a dancing community here. 12

Building a supply chain in developing countries for a Global FMCG firm. When a Global FMCG* client came to us with a new business strategy focused on entering high-potential emerging markets, we knew that our knowledge and expertise could have a significant impact on their business. Switching focus from lowgrowth developed markets, such as Europe and Asia, to highgrowth developing markets, such as Africa and the Middle East, brings huge opportunity but also huge challenges. One of these challenges for our client was changing the business supply chain to accommodate the new countries, products, and customers they were now doing business with. As trusted advisors to the client for many years, the US and UK Strategy& team worked directly with the client s Global Head of Supply on all aspects, from strategy design right through to execution. We developed strategies, processes, tools, and pilots to build and test a new supply chain capable of delivering to 118 new markets. Our process was detailed and thorough we scrutinised the design to ensure it completely aligned with the client s overall business strategy, was sufficiently adaptable to flex in more volatile high-growth markets and would operate effectively once Strategy& had left the project. The result has been a major success. Products are getting to where they need to be and the new strategy has been widely publicised as a shining example to follow for other companies looking to do the same thing. That s meant new business for Strategy& and for our Global FMCG client all over the world. *Fast Moving Consumer Goods 13
