GSM-R Infrastructure Contracts First in innovation, first to installation Siemens was the leader in MORANE trials and blazed the trail in commercial GSM-R deployments, rolling out a full-fledged infrastructure in 1998, deploying the first commercial GSM-R system in Sweden in 2000, and bringing the first high-speed GSM-R application on line in Spain in 2003. Nokia Siemens Networks are first in the lab with GSM-R technology; with commercial projects in 14 countries to credit, we are also first in the field. Covering tens of thousands of track kilometers, countless tunnels and untold trains, Nokia Siemens Networks GSM-R networks serve railways in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Our track record in GSM-R projects is unrivalled. Sweden, Banverket, 7,500 km Sweden s national railway Banverket commissioned a GSM-R network in 1998, with the world s first commercial deployment following in 2000. Today a nationwide voice and data system is up and running, and cross-border tests with Nordic countries have met with success. Netherlands, Pro Rail, 3,000 km and HSL Zuid, 200 km The Netherlands rail authority Prorail launched a nationwide GSM-R project in 2000. Covering 3,000 km, the turnkey project encompassing switching centers, IN systems, GPRS and radio base stations, VMS, SMC, and billing was completed in 2004. We also provide network and fault management systems and operating services. The high-speed HSL Zuid line is undergoing final testing for ETCS operation. Spain, ADIF, 2,000 km The Spanish rail authority ADIF commissioned us to design, deliver, and install a fully redundant GSM-R network for its new 350 km/h high-speed trains connecting Madrid and Barcelona. In June 2008, we landed a new GSM-R contract for the 450 km high-speed route from Madrid to Valencia and Albacete. GSM-R and ETCS trials have been conducted at 300 km/h, and further high-speed projects to major Spanish cities are in planning. UK, CTRL, 110 km Contracted in 2002, the Channel Tunnel Railway Link connecting London with the tunnel entrance on the UK side was completed in 2004. Italy, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, 8,600 km and SIRTI highspeed 400 km Italy s national railway awarded a turnkey contract in 2002 calling for a fully geographical redundant core system, 1,100 radio base stations, VMS, SMC, billing, an interception center, as well as network and fault management systems and operating services. These new high-speed lines are now running from Turin to Novara and Rome to Naples, with the Milanto-Bologna line under construction. Switzerland, SBB, 3,200 km The Swiss national railway SBB opted for a nationwide GSM-R project covering 3,200 km of main lines in 2002, implemented in five phases over the ensuing years. The first lines are up and running with full ETC operation. Tests across neighboring countries borders met with success. Belgium, Infrabel/SNCB, 3,000 km Belgium s national rail company Infrabel/ SNCB chose us as the turnkey supplier for a nationwide GSM-R system to be implemented over the next four years. The contract encompasses all GSM-R network elements and professional services including network operation. Finland, RHK, 5,800 km The Finnish Rail administration RHK commissioned us to set up a national GSM-R network covering all 5,800 km of track nationwide. We installed, tested, and completed the first section in 2006. Norway, JBV, 3,800 km The Norwegian Rail administration Jernbaneverket opted for Nokia Siemens Networks to rollout a national GSM-R system comprising 3,800 track km and more than 650 tunnels. The contract covers all GSM-R network elements, CAB radios for locomotives, and all civil engineering works. India, Indian Railways, 2,000 km Seeking to adopt the GSM-R standard, India s Ministry of Railways kicked off the first of several projects to equip some 2,000 km with GSM-R infrastructure. Nokia Siemens Networks is supplying all operational components ranging from switching centers, IN platforms, base stations, and service and management platforms to base stationto-controller data transmission elements and mobile handsets for drivers.

More than 200 railway companies in 45 countries rely on their safety and efficiency. And Siemens Transportation Systems UK has for over 20 years been a leading supplier of specialist end-to-end radio communications solutions for the railway industry worldwide. Bringing unity to diversity with ERTMS Now that GSM-R has been selected as the data carrier for the ETCS signaling system standard, it is an integral component of the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System, comprising both GSM-R and ETCS). The benefits are considerable, for example, a continuous flow of information can now be provided to onboard computers for calculating speed and braking profiles. The decision to go with GSM-R means a single streamlined digital radio system is here to replace all existing communication systems, thereby helping to reduce costs, improve interoperability, and enhance safety. During the transition, operators must frequently accommodate various signaling and communication systems that are being phased out. The Central Integration Unit (CIU) interfaces disparate technologies, ensuring safe and efficient changeover to GSM-R standard. With far fewer fixed installations alongside the track, ETCS is far more cost-effective than conventional trackside signaling. Communication between drivers and other parties is handled by staff operating from signal boxes or control centers, using a Dispatcher Terminal designed to make the most of GSM-R s advantages. In the event of an emergency, calls are recorded by an Acknowledgement Center, thereby facilitating postemergency fault analyses. Cab Radios from Siemens Transportation Systems play a vital role within the GSM-R system. Siemens Cab Radio incorporates all the EIRENE standards, thereby ensuring safe, easy and efficient operation in any rail network equipped with GSM-R. Two versions are available voice only and voice and data. The data version provides a secure and reliable channel for data transmission within the ETCS solution (e.g. TRAIN- GUARD from Siemens Transportation Systems). Safety features GSM-R markedly improves the security, reliability and safety of rail services. For instance, it significantly enhances communication with trains passing through tunnels, affording far greater security in case of emergencies. GSM-R will eventually be deployed across entire continents. Its total interoperability and compatibility will vastly improve the safety and speed of all railway operational services. And train drivers will be able to communicate freely throughout their journeys, regardless of the country they happen to be in. Maintenance and diagnostics GSM-R allows maintenance data to be transmitted to the depot on the fly to reduce idle time, increase capacity utilization, and ultimately reduce OPEX.
