Science Monday 4/13/15 Today's Focus: How do the motions between the Earth, moon and sun help us better understand moon phases? Moon Phase Notes/ Partner Discussion Moon Phase Modeling Assignment: Moon Phases WKST
Phases of the Moon Use the moon models to create the phases of the moon with your partner. Remember to keep the lit side facing our sun (the front of the room). Tell your partner to stop "orbiting" when you see a phase you can name - use your notes. Your goal is to name all the phases in an entire moon orbit. Switch orbiters so everyone has a chance.
Science Tuesday 4/14/15 Today's Focus: How can the scientific process be used to prove the moon landing really happened? Warm-up /Homework Debrief Myth Busters Class - Episode 1 Episode 2 - OYO Assignment: Finish Myth Buster WKST
1. Draw the phase you would see at this position in the moon's orbit. Name the phase. 2. Draw the phase that would come before this phase. Name that phase. 3. Discuss warm-up with your partner. 4. Discuss assignment answers with your partner. Make adjustments in a new color.

The MOON LANDING Hoax...? April 15, 2015
The MOON LANDING... Was it a HOAX? Ever since NASA broadcast its visits to the moon between 1969 and 1972 to millions of people around Earth, conspiracy theorists have debated endlessly over photographs and video of the journey. Judging by the dedication some have to the cause, the subject of whether or not the moon landings were a hoax rivals only the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the presence of Area 51 in popularity. The Fox Network even aired a television special in 2001, nearly 30 years after the last Apollo mission, titled "Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon?" The MOON LANDING... Was it a HOAX? Poring over every single detail for inconsistencies and potential government tampering, people who buy the moon landing conspiracy theory strive to prove NASA never went to the moon -- instead, they believe the organization filmed a series of fake moon landings in a studio, complete with props, astronaut costumes and intricate lighting setups. The MOON LANDING... Was it a HOAX? But why would NASA and the U.S. government pull off such a strange stunt? The moon landings took place during the Cold War and a tense point in the nuclear arms race, an era in which the two world superpowers, the United States and Russia, competed for technological superiority. Some believe that because sending astronauts to the moon would be incredibly expensive, the U.S. didn't have enough money to complete the project. According to the conspiracy theorists, faking the moon landings would be much cheaper -- if it were convincing enough, it could still send a message to Russia that the United States had the better technology. Science Wednesday Today's Focus: How are mass, gravity and weight related? How do these concepts affect our understanding of space? Mass/Gravity/Weight Think/ Pair/ Share 4/15/15 Assignment: How Much Do I Weigh WKST
1. What is mass? What is gravity? What is weight? 2. How could you change your mass/weight on Earth? 3. How and why does your weight change on different planets?
Mass - the amount of matter in an object, regardless of the space the object takes up. April 15, 2015
Equal sized amounts of cotton and lead. What can you tell me about their masses? April 15, 2015
Gravity - a pulling force on mass Earth's gravity pulls us downward, for example.
More mass = stronger pull of gravity April 15, 2015
Equal sized amounts of cotton and lead. What can you tell me about gravity's pull on each? April 15, 2015
Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on your mass.
Equal sized amounts of cotton and lead. What can you tell me about the weight of each? April 15, 2015
1. What is mass? What is gravity? What is weight? 2. How could you change your weight, while staying on Earth? 3. How and why does your weight change on different planets?
Q. Would I weigh the same at sea level as I do at higher altitudes? source: New York Times A. You would weigh very slightly more at sea level than at the top of a mountain, not enough for you to notice, but a measurable amount. Weight, which really means gravitational force, is proportional to the product of the masses of two objects acting on each other, in this case the giant earth and the tiny you. If the earth were a perfect sphere, with a uniform mass throughout, and you were standing upright exactly at the surface, all the mass within the radius of the circle on which you stand would exert a gravitational force on you and contribute to your weight. However, distance is a factor, too. The more distance you put between yourself and the bulk of the mass of the earth, the less gravitational force it exerts on your body. By one estimate, a person who weighs 150 pounds on the surface of the earth would weigh approximately 149.92 pounds at 10,000 feet above sea level.
1. What is mass? What is gravity? What is weight? 2. How could you change your weight, while staying on Earth?
We know different planets have different gravities...but why? That's our assignment today... not the picture!!

Which of these people do you agree with? Why? What would you say to those you disagree with? Susan said, "If I increase my mass, I will weigh more on the moon than I do now on Earth." Bobby said, "Changing mass has the same effect as changing gravity because your weight will change either way." Julie said, "Mrs. Olson is the BEST!...and when you go to the moon your weight changes because your distance from Earth is farther." Bart said, "If the moon were bigger and farther away, it would definitely pull harder on Earth."
