Preface The goal of this document is to get insight in the most popular/relevant Dutch geodataset with the use of. As the data, the document is constantly updated/extended with new descriptions. If you find omissions, please mail your remarks and suggestions to m.zeylmans@geo.uu.nl. This document contains questions about the data. The goal is not just to have a look at the maps but really try to discover what attribute, accuracies, data formats etcetera are behind each geo-dataset. Apart from the suggested areas it helps to explore regions of the Netherlands you well know. Preperation - Start - Change Data Frame Properties Coordinate System to Rijksdriehoekstelsel or RD_New (EPSG 28992) Addtitional remark on projections: 2

If you add at some stage in this document data to your frame which is in GCS_WGS84 you need to set the appropriate transformation: Amersfoort_To_WGS_1984_4X 3

Actual Height model of the Netherlands (AHN) Product description (www.ahn.nl) The Actual Height model of the Netherlands (Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland) (AHN) is a dataset with for the whole of the Netherlands detailed and precise measurements. For each 5x5m2 in the whole of the Netherlands the height is available according to the Dutch reference system NAP. Within a few years even at a resolution of.5m2 for the whole of the Netherlands. Because the area of the Netherlands is about 33.800 square kilometre, this results in 135.200.000.000 height values! The AHN is mainly a tool for water management, daily jobs of the Dutch waterboards and Rijkswaterstaat, the executive arm of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. With the Height and the change of height, it can be determined whether water will flow sufficient, what the water level must be in ditches and of the discharge of water in rivers, floodplains and ditches is sufficient. Also heights of dikes and other water management features are described. Apart from these main applications the AHN is used for a wide variety of maintenance such as daily management, repairs and 3D mapping, licensing and maintaining. Also Dutch communities, companies and researchers are using the detailed height data. Archaeologists and Physical Geographers/earth scientists are using the data for landscape genesis reconstruction. The height was measured with LIDAR: a technique where a laser mounted in a plane or helicopter is scanning the surface. The measurement of the time of the laser reflection combined with accurate position and angle of the platform result in an accurate measurement of the surface height. These data is interpolated to an continuous dataset Between 1997 and 2003 the Netherlands is mapped for the first time. De accuracy of the height data is about 15 centimetre! From 2007 the waterboards and Rijkswaterstaat are making a new version which is even more precise: the AHN-2. In 2013 this should be available with a.5 meter resolution. Version 1: - Drag and drop the L:\Nederland\AHN\ahn5.lyr in - Zoom in more steps to the province of Utrecht and eventually to the Uithof: Why do the colours change? - Load L:\Nederland\AHN\ahn_hill5.lyr. - Turn nederahn transparent (25%) 4

- Clip out the Uithof area (data management tool). Use the Extent: x=139000-141000 y=454000-456000 - What is the height of the WC van Unnikbuilding? Use the clip result for the query - What are the X,Y,Z units of the AHN (1)? - Describe 2 applications of the AHN with the field of Geosciences - What is the location of the sun in the hillshade layer? - Calculate a slope map for the Province of Limburg. What are the mean and maximum slopes values in the mapped area? AHN2 After the creation of AHN1 the collection of the data AHN2 started and was brought to a finish in April 2013. The data is located on s:\ahn2 and can more easily be accessed by opening the data via a rastercatalogue in ArcCatalog. Version 2: - Browse in ArcCatalog to L:\Nederland\AHN\AHN2\AHN2.gdb\ahn2_05_int - Select the Preview tab and zoom in until the level that you see the data - Drag and drop all 4 layers in - Zoom in more steps to the province of Utrecht and eventually to the Uithof area: - What is the height of the WC van Unnikbuilding? - What are the X,Y,Z units of the AHN (2)? - What would be the advantage of version2 in relation to version 1 - What is a big difference between ahn2_05_ruw and ahn2_05_int. Natura2000 (LNV) Productdescription Natura 2000 is an ecological network of protected areas in the territory of the European Union. In May 1992, the governments of the European Communities adopted legislation designed to protect the most seriously threatened habitats and species across Europe. This legislation is called the Habitats Directive and complements the Birds Directive adopted in 1979. These two directives are the basis of the creation of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The Birds Directive requires the establishment of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for birds. The Habitats Directive similarly requires Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) to be designated for species other than birds, and for habitats. Together, SPAs and SACs make up the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Furthermore, the Natura 2000 network is the EU contribution to the "Emerald network" of Areas of Special Conservation Interest (ASCIs) set up under the Bern Convention on the conservation of European wildlife and natural habitats. Natura 2000 is also a key contribution to the Program of Work of Protected Areas of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The SPAs are designated directly by each EU Member State, while the SACs follow a more elaborated process: each EU Member State must compile a list of the best wildlife areas containing the habitats and species listed in the Habitats Directive; this list must then be submitted to the European Commission, after which an evaluation and selection process on European level will take place in order to become a Natura 2000 site. Natura 2000 protects around 18% of land in the 27 EU countries, and it can be considered almost completed in the EU terrestrial environment. In any case, there are still some issues which should be solved, but in general the process to construct Natura 2000 has been very positive. During the process, the European Commission has warned several EU member states over non-compliance with the EU nature directives (Habitats and Birds Directives), in particular in relation with the insufficiency of the Natura 2000 network, e.g. the European Commission started an "infringement procedure" against Poland in April 2006. Natura 2000 is currently being also enlarged in the marine off-shore environment. The process is currently ongoing, and is expected to be close to completion by 2012. In respect to wilderness and wild land areas, the European Commission is currently developing guidelines on the relation between Natura 2000 and these areas. Members of the European Parliament in the plenary session of February 3, 2009 backed a report calling for further protection of Europe's wilderness. "The report also calls for more European funding to protect existing sites and "re-wild" ones that are currently being used by humans or agriculture. At present 13% of the forest zone of the 27- member EU is designated as Natura 2000 sites under the existing Birds and Habitats directive. Postal codes locations (Areas) Productdescription Postal codes were introduced in the Netherlands in 1977. The code exists of four digits together with two characters. The first 2 digits define the region, the last two numbers the district. The characters define neighborhood and street. Individual streets often have different codes for the odd even sides; also parts of streets are divided in coherent areas for postal delivery. Together with the house number the postal code is a unique address; This unique address has far more applications then just post delivery. Spatial dataset of postal codes and rd-coordinates are commercially available. All kind of data is and can be linked to these postal codes. (www.wikipedia.nl) Version 4 digit: - load L:\Nederland\Postcodelocaties\2009\ PC4_single_vlak.shp - How many 4 digit postal codes exist in 2009? - Why do postal codes change and is it necessary to update the data each year? 28

- BAG (including Postal codes locations) Productdescription The Basisregistraties Adressen en Gebouwen (BAG) is the name for two Dutch base-registrations: Basisregistratie Adressen (BRA) and Basisgebouwenregistratie (BGR). These datasets are based on a law from July 2009 and states that the municipalities must register base information of buildings and addresses in an automated system. All government organisations must use this data. Maintenance is with the Dutch Kadaster. BAG data is public available. Original data is available in both XML and GML format. Data is updated on a daily base.
