VOIP NEXT GENERATION MOBILE TELEPHONY Piyush Yadav, Yogesh Yadav ABSTARCT- VOIP is a technology which uses IP to provide the telephony services. It is a good choice to provide voice, data and video communication for next generation. PSTN based telephony uses circuit switching technology; however the use of Packet switching by VOIP has led the new communication environment. The cost factor has led to the popularity of the mobile VOIP.The introduction of SIP technology was the milestone in the mobile telephony. The mobile handset integrated with SIP VOIP client created boom in the market. The speed with which it is rising will definitely replace the existing cellular system in next decades. This paper describes the concept of VOIP and the advancement of technology which led to Mobile VOIP. KEYWORDS - VOIP, CODEC, MOBILE, VOIP, SIP. INTRODUCTION VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. VOIP is the technology that allows the users to make voice calls using an internet connection instead of regular phone lines. VOIP service may be categorized as computer based, mobile based, residential and business oriented. However the increased users of mobiles, smartphones and tablets cause the positive and rising slope of the mobile telephony in the market. WORKING The regular telephony system supports circuit switching. However the working of the VOIP is something different. The sound samples are recorded but not stored, instead are sent over IP network to the receiver. The working of VOIP starts with recording of sound samples. This sample is compressed by CODEC method. CODEC is referred as compressor/decompressor. Speech CODECS are optimized to improve spoken words at the expense of sounds outside the frequency range of human speech. Once the sound is recorded and compressed into small samples. Samples are collected into larger chunks. Chunks are placed into data packets. Packets are send as post card sent via postal mail. sound compressed samples packets sent via IP Working of VOIP 266
MOBILE VOIP- The service that allows VOIP calls without the use of a computer. The phones are directly connected to IP network by use of technologies such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet. By installing mobile VOIP call can be made easily from the hand phones, as most of the mobile phones today are equipped with Wi-Fi. It supports three technologies UMA, SIP and SKYPE. UMA stands for Unlicensed Mobile Access. It is generally used for GSM(Global System for mobiles) sets. Skype is a proprietary voice over Internet Protocol service. Calls to other users within skype is free of charge, while calls to landline telephones and mobile phones are charged via a debit-based user account system. SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. SIP arrived in the market in 2006. After the introduction of SIP, the mobile vendors started to introduce SIP VOIP client based handsets. VOIP telephony diagram Mobile VOIP is currently supported on iphones, Android phones, Blackberry, Windows phones and symbian phones. One can enjoy by simply downloading the free mobile VOIP app from their app market and register with one of the supported VOIP brands. 267

Nokia E-series supporting the SIP and VOIP client dual-mode Wi-Fi handsets arrived. (Nokia E60, Nokia E61, Nokia E70). Most notably Nokia N95. 2008- Nokia introduced 6300i running series 40 operating system supporting mobile VOIP client. Aircel introduced mobile VOIP even during flight. 2009- OpenWrt operating system started to support mobile VOIP using Asterisk. 2010- In January 2010 Apple Inc. updated the iphone developer SDK to allow VoIP over cellular networks. icall became the first App Store app to enable VoIP on the iphone and ipod Touch over cellular 3G networks. Nokia introduced (Nokia X3-02, Nokia C3-01 and, Nokia C3-01 Gold Edition) with integrated SIP VoIP that supports HD voice (AMR-WB). 2011- Panasonic introduces base station of type KX-TGP for supporting VOIP on cordless phones. Net gear and TREND net introduces switches aimed at VOIP. VOIP became more popular. 2012- Nokia introduces ASHA 302 and 311 supporting SOP VOIP client. 268
BENEFITS OF MOBILE VOIP Mobile VoIP phone users especially smartphones users can get benefited by a number of features- 1. Cost 2. Speed 3. Mobility 4. Flexibility 5. Low or no roaming charges After 2008 the mobile telephony slopes up. It started to overthrow the circuit based telephony as well as other existing VOIP technology. When we analyze the graph, we see that the cellular telephony is going to expand its market more and more. The cellular circuit switched, fixed circuit switched VOIP is going to lose its market by a healthy margin in 2014 and 2015. Market share of VOIPs CONCLUSIONS- From above discussion we can conclude that Mobile VOIP is on the way to create its strong position in the telephony market. It is diluting the complex circuit based telephony system. In the last seven years the Mobile VOIP has expanded its market from the western countries to Asian and European countries in a better way. The features of mobile VOIP are increasing its demand among the users. As a result of which it can be seen as the Next Generation Mobile Telephony. 269
