We offer more than 700 undergraduate scholarships and give out more than $9 million every year to help you achieve your goals during your studies. We understand there is more to life than just study. 2 3 HOW SCHOLARSHIPS CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS We offer various scholarships and bursaries valued from $2000 (one year only) to $60,000 for combined degree to help you achieve your goals at the University of Sydney. THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY SCHOLARS MERIT AWARDS These awards support students who achieve an excellent ATAR result and have the skills and attributes to thrive at the University of Sydney. Students with a minimum ATAR of 95 (90 for courses offered by the Sydney College of Arts and Sydney Conservatorium of Music) will be considered. To be in the running, you need to undertake your university entry qualification Higher School Certificate (HSC), International Baccalaureate (IB) or equivalent during 2014, and specify the University of Sydney for at least one of your Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) preferences. Preference condition To be considered for Merit Awards, you need to have the University of Sydney listed as one of your preferences throughout the application period, ie. from September 2014 to January 2015. Please note that if you do not include one of our courses in your preferences, we are unable to access your ATAR, and will not be able to offer you a scholarship. Applications open in September. To apply for Merit awards, please visit our website under now open for more information. /updates THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY SCHOLARS EQUITY AWARDS These scholarships support students with excellent academic ability who have faced significant challenges, including financial, medical or disability issues, refugee status or living in a rural area. To be eligible you will need to provide documentation to UAC, such as a means-tested Commonwealth benefit. We also offer bursaries to support first-year students with financial needs. When you apply for Equity awards, you will automatically be considered for bursaries. A separate application for bursaries is not required. Applications will open in September. If you are a continuing student (already enrolled at the University), you are only eligible to apply for Equity awards. ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER SCHOLARSHIPS The University of Sydney and the Australian Government offer a range of scholarships and financial assistance programs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Scholarships are valued from $2500 to $10,000 annually. The University of Sydney Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry Scholarship is designed for students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who have obtained an ATAR of 85 or above in their HSC exams (or equivalent), and are about to start the first year of an undergraduate course at the University of Sydney. The scholarship is worth $10,000 for one year only, and will be paid in instalments each semester (subject to enrolment). You don t need to apply, because you will automatically be considered if your ATAR meets the cutoff. If offered this scholarship, you need to take it up by the time you enrol for your accepted degree program in the year for which the offer is made. The scholarship may be deferred for up to one year. You need to make applications for Commonwealth Indigenous scholarships through UAC at www.uac.edu.au/equity Contact Student Support Services to find out about the different types of support available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. It has opened up a world of opportunities and friendships with many amazing Sydney University athletes. CHRIS FRIEND BACHELOR OF COMMERCE, ELITE ATHLETE PROGRAM My scholarship enables me to focus on the things that I find important. I love being able to manage all of my diverse involvements, ranging from focusing on my study to helping organise events for the student societies. The environment and culture at the University of Sydney welcomes all personalities. The opportunities are endless. BILLY KOVANIS BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (LIBERAL STUDIES), UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY BUSINESS SCHOOL ENTRY MERIT SCHOLARSHIP ELITE ATHLETE PROGRAM (SPORTING SCHOLARSHIPS) Pursuing academic and sporting goals at the same time can be challenging. The right support and encouragement is crucial for student athletes to achieve their ambitions. In 2013, more than 390 student athletes, across more than 35 sports and all academic disciplines, received valuable assistance through gaining a Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) scholarship and, with it, membership to the Elite Athlete Program. Members of this program enjoy a wide range of helpful benefits and services. These may include: financial assistance, international travel grants, academic representation and counselling, private tutoring, chaplaincy, and complimentary access to SUSF facilities and sports science services (dietitian, sports psychology and strength and conditioning). The pathway to success in your sport and studies requires hard work, but with the benefits and services of the Elite Athlete Program, alongside the support of dedicated SUSF staff, you may find the right balance to realise your potential. If you plan to take a gap year that is, a year away from study to do something else we recommend you check each faculty s website to see if there are any scholarships suitable for your situation. My scholarships have enabled me to afford the full spectrum of educational resources, and access an invaluable opportunity to volunteer in Kathmandu working with children with cerebral palsy. The University not only educated me on how I can be the best in my field it also challenged my way of thinking and brought out the best in me. WAYNE OU BACHELOR OF APPLIED SCIENCE (EXERCISE AND SPORT SCIENCE) AND MASTER OF PHYSIOTHERAPY, ACCESS SCHOLARSHIP AND FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP The Outstanding Achievement Scholarship enabled me to move from my home town, Dubbo, to study among a group of high-calibre students and learn from world-class lecturers. My faculty scholarships have also given me the opportunities to study abroad in two of the most exciting global cities London and Shanghai which has added depth and real-world international experience to my degree. MADELINE GREER BACHELOR OF COMMERCE/ARTS OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP, FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES AND UNITED STATES STUDIES CENTRE SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT FOR NON-SCHOOL LEAVERS SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS TAFE STUDENTS If you are studying the HSC or an equivalent university entry qualification at TAFE, you are eligible to apply for University of Sydney Scholars Merit and Equity Awards. When applying for the scholarship, where the form asks for information such as a school report, simply include your most recent results notice. As a recent school reference may not be applicable, you could include an academic reference from one of your teachers or course coordinators. When the application form asks for an endorsement, you need to get this section completed by someone at TAFE who can verify your details and achievements, in order for your application to proceed. TAKING A GAP YEAR If you plan to take a gap year that is, a year away from study to do something else you need to apply for Merit Awards in the same year you will complete your HSC (or equivalent). Deferment of scholarship is possible for Merit Awards only, similar to deferring your offer of admission to the University. However, you cannot defer Equity Awards. Visit sydney.edu.au/student-services GOVERNMENT INCOME SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS Full-time domestic students in an approved scholarship course who are receiving Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy may be eligible for a Start-Up scholarship and Relocation scholarship. These are paid directly to eligible students through the Department of Human Services agency (formerly Centrelink). An application is not necessary. These payments will not affect your eligibility for University of Sydney scholarships. For details, visit www.humanservices.gov.au
8 9 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS IMPORTANT DATES HOW DO I APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP? Visit our website sydney.edu.au/ scholarships/updates, select the scholarship you would like to apply for and follow the instructions. WHEN IS MY APPLICATION DUE? Applications for the University of Sydney Scholars Merit and Equity Awards close on 2 October 2014. Closing dates for faculty scholarships vary. Please check the dates carefully. CAN I APPLY FOR MORE THAN ONE SCHOLARSHIP? Yes. You can apply for several scholarship programs offered by the University of Sydney. However, you can only hold one primary scholarship valued at $6000 or more at any one time. WHEN DO I FIND OUT IF I VE BEEN AWARDED A UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY SCHOLARSHIP? If successful, you should receive an offer by early January 2015 via email. I M INTENDING TO DO A COMBINED DEGREE. WHICH FACULTY SHOULD I PUT ON THE APPLICATION FORM? If you are unsure which faculty to list for your preferred combined degree, check the UAC handbook or the UAC website (www.uac.edu.au) for the course code. WHAT IF MY SCHOOL OR INSTITUTION DOESN T GIVE ME A REPORT OR REFERENCE BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE? Please do not send in attachments after you have submitted your application. If you don t have a report for Year 12 yet, just supply your most recent report (usually Year 11). If you don t have a reference, don t worry. The assessors know that many schools don t supply references until much later in the year (if at all), so they will look at your application as a whole. You will not be disadvantaged if your school does not supply references. IF I TAKE A GAP YEAR, CAN I STILL APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP? Yes, but for faculty and merit awards only. You need to apply for the University of Sydney Scholars Merit Awards in the same year you complete your HSC (or equivalent). Merit awards may be deferred for up to two years with permission from the dean of your faculty. You may be eligible to apply for some faculty scholarships after taking a gap year. For more information about these scholarships, visit sydney.edu.au/faculty-scholarships WILL I STILL BE CONSIDERED IF I AM TAKING AN EXAM OTHER THAN THE HSC, SUCH AS TAFE, INTERSTATE/OVERSEAS QUALIFICATIONS OR THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE? Yes, as long as you apply to study at the University of Sydney through UAC, your application will be assessed in exactly the same way as those students studying for the HSC. If you are taking an alternative examination to the HSC and are selected to receive a scholarship, you will be notified in early 2015 (when UAC provides HSC equivalent marks to the University of Sydney). CAN I APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP AFTER I HAVE STARTED UNI? Yes, the University of Sydney Scholars Equity Awards and Indigenous Commonwealth scholarships are open to all current undergraduate students. If you do not receive a confirmation by early November, please contact us at scholarship.applications@sydney.edu.au For University of Sydney Scholars Equity Awards, you can check your application status at www.uac.edu.au MID DECEMBER 2014 ATAR RELEASE DATE Firm offers for University of Sydney Scholars Merit Awards will be sent out as soon as your ATAR is available to the University (states other than NSW may have a different ATAR release date). END OF JANUARY 2015 Firm offers for University of Sydney Scholars Equity Awards will be sent out by UAC. PAYMENT Payment of the scholarship will be processed over two instalments after census dates in early April and early September. Therefore, you need to remain enrolled after the census date to receive payment.
